Blizzard Unveiling Lich King Cinematic, Details at Leipzig
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:40 AM on August 19, 2008
Mike McWhertor and Michael Fahey are jetting their way to German as we speak, so they can cover the antics and news of Games Convention. It was last year at Games Convention that I had my first chance to play a bit of StarCraft II. Unfortunately, this year's Blizzard showcase will not include hands-on with Diablo III.
The good news is that Blizzard plans to unveil the opening cinematic movie for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King at the big show. They also will be hosting a Q&A session following the airing on Thursday. Blizzard also plans to have more hands on time with StarCraft II and Lich King as well as other Q&A sessions with members of the StarCraft II and Diablo III teams.
Make sure to check back here starting Wednesday for our in-depth and live coverage of the biggest and best public gaming show in Europe (personally, i think the world).

Is it just me, or does the lich king look just like the Witch-King of Angmar from LOTR?

You know, I thought this was already out.
My level of care for it compared to TBC is so low, it's not even funny.
It just seems WoTLK can't reclaim the charm present in TBC,WoW, WTC, SC, D2, TLV, or TFT.
Well, at least in my mind.

I can't wait to see the cinematic, it's going to be kickass as it always is from Blizzard.

Is it weird that I'm extremely excited to see this cinematic? The first one was awesome seeing the Night Elf running through the woods, the second one was the shiznit seeing the troll riding the raptor, what piece of this one will get me hyped and make me go back for another two and a half years after a 8 month hiatus? Sigh. Do I sound like a Blizzard fanboy? Lol.

How about we get some trolls in the cinematic this time Blizz? And not just 4 seconds of a shadow riding a raptor.

It would be hilarious if they left out the trolls and gnomes. Probably won't happen, but can't wait to see it.

It's funny, getting into E3 used to be a dream of mine, and over the past many years I've grown to kinda hate it. Instead, I've replaced #14 on my to do list with "GDC or PAX, at least one of 'em!"
I have to agree with ya, Crecente, GDC seems like the best gaming show in the world.

World of Arenacraft: Wrath of the Gladiator
Competitive gameplay and MMO's don't really mix up together. I hope they focus more on dungeons.
I'm sure the trailer will be good as always... its Blizzard after all.

@Ad-hominem: Are you joking? WOTLK is classic Warcraft in every area, I mean, have you seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Splinter in Dalaran sewers? :D

@Ad-hominem: At the risk of sounding like a braggard, I've had a chance to hack away at the beta...and I find Wrath to be far superior to TBC in terms of semantics and overall fun. Starting up a Death Knight will have you doing quests that are borderline psychopathic, whereas their methods of getting started in Northrend are vastly superior to bottle-necking everyone into Hellfire Ramparts.
Finally, the devs have seriously stepped up the amount of lore found in this expansion. I hope that it all makes it through to live, as I spent a good amount of time while playing my Death Knight just reading up on the little papers and books that I managed to loot.
You guys are in for a treat, I assure you.

I don't like when they do this because this cinematic is exactly what I look forward to when I buy and install the game. Nothing gets me more pumped then seeing a Blizzard cinematic and then being able to play the game right after. I'll have to do my best to not watch it until the expansion is released.
I am excited for WotLK because it is back on Azeroth, and I like this part of the lore a lot better than the Burning Crusade. It really feels like a continuation of WC3's lore, since my favorite part of that story had to do with Arthas.

Lemme tell you this... playing as a death knight is a great break from the boring end game of level 70. It's a strong class to, a missing piece from blizzard's available classes. Personally, my favorite! Too bad they didn't have the cinematic in the beta it would be cool watching it over and over.

Blizzard cinematics are always great on every game they make. I still like watching the ones from Starcraft from time to time. There is no doubt that this one will be no different.

Sadly the cinematics from Blizzard, which are always great, are also greatly misleading both in terms of what in-game is like as well as what gameplay is like. Of course, they are probably a bit worried right now about how many folks are gonna jump ship for warhammer, especially the PvP server crowd, but its their own fault for not having Lich King out already.

These WoW cinematics suck for the simple reason they have no story relevance. They look beautiful, but composition and design make them inferior to just about every other Blizzard cinematic. Hell, Id rather the old War2 cinematics over these generic class pinups (it doesnt even deserve cinematic as a name since there's nothing cinematic about these).

I hate the PVP in WoW. It's too gear based, time sink based, rather than actually based on actual skill. Infact, most people absolutley HOPE they get matched up with worse people, so it's easier on them, most people don't even want an even match, because an even match makes it take more time, and people don't want that.

@Paincake: I'd rather spend my time in a Alterac Valley match than playing Call of Duty: 4. I'm actually really good and LOVE COD:4, but pvp in MMOs, or just WoW, it's awesome. The only reason I'd play on COD:4 over WoW is because 30 something of my friends play it, 0 play WoW... oh and now i gtg back on my paper.

October 2007: Illidan Stormrage (in TBC Cinematic): "You are not prepared!"
Early February 2008: Blizzard: "You are not prepared because we haven't technically finished designing Black Temple yet so if you're in one of those awesome "world first guilds", you get to keep slogging through Karazhan, Serpentshrine and Tempest Keep until we SAY so."
April 2008: Blizzard: "You are not prepared... for our eSport!"
Blizzard's cinematics are nice. And are then completely irrelevant by the release of the game it's attached to. Such is the nature of MMOs. The cinematic draws you in only to discover the game is a clusterfuck.
Yes, I'm in WotLK beta.
Yes, it's just as much of a clusterfuck as it is currently because Blizzard has tried shifting the focus of the game too many times. They said there wasn't going to be gear normalization like TBC. So far, that's a lie. Replaced T6 gear within 3-4 levels. Replaced epic and blue level 70 gems with level 72 greens. Inflation is through the roof.
It's more classic Warcraft than the high fantasy of TBC, but the damage from TBC has been done and simply cannot be undone. The damage from trying to make WoW's PvP and eSport has been done and cannot be undone.

@ThatShortGuy: Well, maybe it's because TBC was such a let-down that led me to feel that WoW and WoTLK had let me down as far as Blizzard Charm goes.

@Captiosus:
When did they say no normalization? Either they are idiots or they didn't, but was it really such a surprise? If they doesn't do that, then what point is there doing the new dungeons and quests when you already are so massively superior?
And with such logic, casuals will never catch up, without leveling to 80, do old bc content and then start with wotlk content?
MMO inflation for that matter: Was that really a surprise as well? Tell me how to avoid that, I believe it's impossible.

@Captiosus: Looking at the gear revealed so far, I may replace maybe a weapon or so before 80, but there aren't any other pieces that really catch my eye.
I kept most of my Naxx gear till 70, and I'll probably do the same till 80.

On a WOTLK slightly off topic note, I hate how each expansion just ruins the best gear from the previous expansion/game. Level 60 gear was awfully RUINED by greens at what, level 62?! Oh, and death knights pretty much start out with a blue gear, though it's awful because it's level 55, still probably better then you were at level 55. And non-betaers, lemme tell ya that the damage the Death knight does is crazy... probably even faster DPS then a rogue, though I never played one at level 55. Learn to play the class, then you'll be crazy good. And afraid of a BG full of death knights on your team? You're crazy! Whoever has the most death knights on their team wins lol.

@Shockadin:
Blizz has already said they aren't messing with DK's damage untill they see what it looks like with the right gear and everything at 80.
Regardless, my understanding is that to really maximize damage they give up a lot of damage reduction.

@Shockadin: They haven't finished the class yet. Their intention is that they won't be any better than other classes at endgame. They make dramatic changes to DKs pretty much every patch of the beta, and, in fact, just recently totally revamped their talent trees and drastically nerfed their AoE capabilities.
