Brett Farve? No EA, It's Brett Favre
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on August 13, 2008
"Brett" is easy to spell. B-r-e-t-t. "Favre", not so easily. But to review: F-a-v-r-e-. Not "Farve". If you're a football fan, you should know that. And if you're EA, you damn well should know that — especially because he's the coverboy! Reader Devon points out that Brett Favre's name is mispelled in the collector's edition menu in Madden 09. That's a pic of it right up there. Well, at least EA didn't put "Brett Favour".
Thanks, Devon for the tip!

Hey! It's not so much spelled wrong as it is pronounced though. Brett Favre is pronounced Brett F-a-r-r-v-v with the r before the v. One thing if the v was silent, no problem, but this is one totally messed up thing. I almost believe they spelled it incorrectly just to make a point.

Hehe, at least they don't have to bother with Patrick Roy anymore in the hockey games, the amount of times I had to explain how to pronounce his name to my friends.

@who8myrice: It is though if you are going to put someones as your cover you should make sure that you spell the person's name right. It just says that someone wasn't paying attention and most likely there will be a patch to fix someones boo boo.

@darbonne:
Well, technically that's not how his name SHOULD be pronounced. The sad thing is that Madden, that drunken moron, started calling him "Farve" like 10+ years ago and the name stuck so effectively that even Brett himself doesn't care to challenge it.
The name is definitely NOT pronounced "Farve". That's like calling sherbet "sherbert" or nuclear "nukular". Yeah, people say it, but it doesn't make it right. =/

I never had a problem with that one, maybe because I'm English. I still almost wrote Roi though, rather embarrassing as I'm a Habs fan.
To be fair, American Football does have some of the strangest spellings for first names and variations on traditional names.

I don't really care for Brett Favre nor the Packers.
As a big fan of the Jaguars, Bucs, Patriots, and Bronco.. I don't really give a flying haysack about how his last name spelled.
At first it does look like it would sound out to be like
"Fah-eey-rehh," over "Fah-ARRRGH-fffe."

RuneX21
Posted 7:39 PM 13/8/08
@klew:
Well, he is a cajun(from louisana) thus I would make a strong guess that the name is french.
@Archaotic:
In linguistics, if a word is pronounced a certian way by a majority of people for a extended amount of time, than it is the correct way to pronounce it. This can be seen in many words that are now correct in american english, but incorrect in proper english.(While the languages are the same, america has a differant set of phrases which one might call a dialect, that sets it apart. Additionally, within each of those nations you have several other dialects.) So for those who pronounce his name "farve", your not incorrect at all really. Just like people who say "sherbert". I would go as far as to say that the majority of americans have been pronouncing it as that for a very long time. I actually wouldnt be suprised to see the spelling change over the next 20-30 years as well to match the pronounciation as has happened in the past with other words.
In anycase, as for EA screwing up, there is no excuse for it. Misspelling the cover star for your best selling title is inexcusable.

@Archaotic: That's why his name's pronounced this way? It's that simple? Me and a friend already had epic theories about this misspelling, but it's that simple? Wow.

I'm convinced its because ol' Brett spelled his name wrong on the job application and nobody in the NFL could bring themselves to tell him.

Well from the spelling it should be pronounced Fahv-ruh. In order for it to be Fahv-ray it would have to be spelled Favré.
