Burnout Paradise 'Cagney' Update Arrives Tomorrow
Posted by Owen Good at 5:00 AM on August 4, 2008
The "Cagney" update for Burnout Paradise on the Xbox 360 will arrive via Xbox Live tomorrow. Developer Criterion posted confirmation of the release date on Friday, and commenter Sean Beanland mentioned it in yesterday's discussion of Burnout Bikes.
"Cagney", already applied to the PS3 version, was originally slated for release on July 10. The update is free and is far more than a patch or a fix. Three new online game modes, two additional cars, and 70 new timed multipart challenges come with the new version, as well as "a complete overhaul of our Online Racing System and a stack of other major improvement", says Criterion. A full listing of features is in this announcement.

I've been itching for a new game to fill my time until LittleBigPlanet comes out. And I've been debating between this game and Bladestorm, as I had a ball with both the demo's.
So, Kotakuland, I'm leaving it to you to give me some advice: Which game would be better? The online, visceral, immediate satisfaction of Burnout, or the RPGish, massive battle feeling of Bladestorm that combines strategy and RPG to the already addictive hack-n-slash combo that is the Dynasty Warriors series?

Unfortunately my Burnout disc, despite being in mint condition, fails to read. So I havn't been able to play the game with this update :(
It's the only disc I have that doesn't read and I can't for the life of me figure out why, and despite how much I want to, I refuse to buy the game again

Very cool to see such commitment to a game that's 8 months old now, and free even! I haven't gotten near 100% yet (does anyone else hate Stunt Mode?), but I'll be checking this out and the future updates. Motorcycles sound cool. Airplanes, that blew my mind.

@Elly: This should be the norm, like it has always been on PC, Elly. It's kinda sad Criterion is the exception instead of the norm...

Still on the fence about this..now that I know you can't "destroy" the motorbikes, it just doesn't feel like Burnout.
It's not about speed, it's about the crashes. Get it right Criterion!

Ahh man, I'm on the fence about this one. I'm still waiting for the "trophies" to be implemented. If it's implemented in the next update, then I'm SOLD!

@PapaBear434: I'm afraid I haven't played Bladestorm (I would like to), but I have to say this game is very very good. I was cynical after being unimpressed with the demo, but there is so much to do, and just to see a game being supported like this on a console is almost heart warming. So whilst I won't badmouth a game I haven't played, I shall instead heap praise upon this utterly compelling racer, that offers some of the best online, some of the best offline (arcadey) racing, and just generally some of the most fun I've had on a racing game.

@PapaBear434:
The only thing I dislike about BO :Paradise is the fact that I can not change the settings to steer with the D-pad instead of the analog stick. Other than that, it's a decent game.

I can't wait for this update to get back to ranked racing, and for the next one in (most likely) September to get back into the game itself. As it stands it has become boring, specially the city, but with night driving, weather effects and a new island on the way (and these are free as well) I'm sure I'll enjoy the game much more.

I'm playing my brother-in-law's PS3 version on my PS3 and I added the update about two weeks ago and I sure like the changes of the intro of the game and new challenges. I need to get me a wireless adapter for my X360 so I could get the update since my ethernet cable got fried during the electric storm over here in Delaware.

@BryanH: I had a lot of trouble with Stunt Runs until I discovered driving in reverse between stunts. No worrying about the countdown timer and you get +1 additional multiplier for reverse air (works on superjumps too).

The dedication Criterion is showing towards this game is unprecedented for console owners. Konami, EA(Devs), and Activision, take heed. This is how you endear yourself to your fanbase.
@EVILSTUART: Yep. 360 owners are delicious. Ps3 owners are good, but they're so hard to get a hold of. Meanwhile, who wants to eat a Wii owner? Might as well eat a Tandy 386 owner.
