Burnout Paradise Vrooming On To PSN
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 7:00 AM on August 15, 2008
If you missed Burnout Paradise on PS3 back in January, now is the time to get your open-world speed on as the racer hits the PlayStation Network.
The PSN edition — downloadable from the PlayStation Store — will come with all the recent patches and updates and will be able to download the 'Year Of Paradise' DLC that adds new vehicles (including motorcycles) and game modes.
The DLC will also bring a live news page containing updates about new content and multiplayer events.
Burnout Paradise should arrive this Autumn for $US 29.99.

nice seeing all of this support from criterion, but to bad that all of it is going into a racing game.

@jfm3: There will be trophies, and ALL will be retroactive, since the save is locked to you via a 3-way security method. Go ahead and try to download a save for Burnout Paradise.
I'd recommend backing up your original save first though.

Wow. That's pretty cool I guess. I wonder if saves from the disc version will go towards the downloadable version (I don't know what Warhawk did in that situation).

@SG79: Well that's the thing. Siren is not multiplatform. Neither is Warhawk nor Fat Princess. I guess the real difference will come with games like Heavy Rain. But I mean, seriously? And we don't even know that it will be a full 9GB yet (Doesn't a 360 disc have only 6.5 GB available?)...

But yeah, it's quite ironic. Especially that Sony started the trend of releasing full fledged games on the PSN with Warhawk. They've been simpler games so far though.

@00000000: Considering Sony has all but phased out PS2 backwards compatibility, I'm guessing no. It's unfortunate.

You're all suckers. By the time this drops, you should be able to get the actual game disc for $30. A disc which you can then let friends borrow, or sell later for a few bucks back.

Seems like a lot of people really dig these digital downloads... Why is that? If I had a choice of getting this as a download or the hard copy, I'd nab the hard copy in a second. Why waste HDD space when you don't have to? Just so you can spare yourself from disc swapping? Sacrificing 5 - 7gigs doesn't seem worth that trade off, but maybe that's just me :\

It will likely be locked to just one console and one PSN login, and you will have to be logged into PSN to play it. If your internet connection goes out, you can't play Burnout. And you can't trade it in.
Just like Warhawk, GT5:P and other "big" downloadable games on PSN.
But the disc versions have none of these limitations.
As a user, I don't get the attraction to this.
As a game dev or publisher, I see a HUGE attraction to this sort of scheme, though.

The main reason why this as a DD title is good news is simple.. laziness. Most of the time, I check what's in the drive and then browse my downloaded games. There are times where I have gone into a downloaded game JUST because I didn't want to get up and load a disc. It's convenient and a great perk for the system.
After all, nobody bitches about their iPod... "Der, why should I listen to the m4u when I can listen to the CD audio version?"
Same thing here. It's the exact same reason Xbox has an Arcade and Wii has a channels interface. The days of game consoles only playing the game that's physically in the system is rapidly retreating.

Posted 7:50 AM 15/8/08
I already have it. Darn. I think this might kick start the "real" digital distribution for games. I hope they all do this for reasonably sized multiplatform games.
Love how Criterion improves Burnout Paradise after it is released. Why can't all developers do this? Criterion is becoming one of my fav developers. Can't wait til the next bike update!

Posted 7:44 AM 15/8/08
Why would anyone get the DLC version....does this update not allowed for those who purchase the disk? Because you can get burnout now, and get a physical copy for 29.99 already at Fry's. That's right folks....no need to get a virtual copy when you can have it in your hands.

This is the sort of stuff I love about PS3. The play ground is just bigger with PS3 I guess.
Larger space to fit all your toys.
No restrictions on hard drive size or silly pricing.
Can't think of any other consoles that will alow you to purchase a full current gen retail game from the consoles online store, and have it saved direct to your hard drive.
This is the start of something big!
Digital distribution sees around an 80% return for developers. Compared to the 30% at best from the current retail model. If EA can beam games to us direct and cut out the people between developer to gamer they would only have to sell just less than half as many titles to make just as much money.
Big win for developers! Good prices for us! Shit news for game shops the world over!
I'm quite worried about this as i run a game shop...

@Saint Anima: Proof:
[community.eu.playstation.com]
To play either the downloadable Warhawk or GT5:P, you must be logged into the account you purchased it with, you must be logged into PSN with that account, and you can only play it on the single console that you purchased the game on.
When these games cost the same as the disc based versions, and the disc based versions have none of these limitations, I don't see why you would get the downloadable version. I can see why a dev or publisher would want you to get the downloadable version, though. No re-selling the game!

I have downloaded Warhawk, GT5P, etc. from a shared PSN Account. We can play at the same time no problem.
And I'm playing GT5P w/o signing into PSN or turning on my router.
Each purchase on the PSN gives you 5 download slots per game.
You can either save it so when your HD crashed or you bought a new PS3 you can DL it again OR you can share it to your friends so they can download them too.

@FP_slomo788: they never said they needed blu-ray. This is one of the games that didn't depend on the capacity of the disc, but i am sure that it was appreciated for freedom. but yes, blu-ray is needed. RFOM was about 15 gigs, HS was more, and MGS4 needed a dual layer BD, and that is only a few games that needed BD. If a company wants the game to be multiplatform then they have to minimize the size to the specs of the 360 or they will have to make multiple disc for the 360, which is more costly. so most games that are using the capacity of BD are late ports (that want to up the ante: oblivion, bioshock) or they are exclusives.

I might wonder which 800MB data to delete ^^"
@Rectangle: ANY PSN game can be shared between 5 master-accounts. And most can be shared to a different region. I bought PixelJunk monsters from the US store, while I'm in EU (outside UK), and I play it with my UK account. For all of those saying that this is no big deal and that the disc is just as affordable, you're missing the whole point.
