Call Of Duty 5 Co-Op Trailer
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:40 AM on August 9, 2008
Call of Duty's never really done co-op before. Which has been disappointing. Chin up though, kids! Call of Duty: World At War will feature co-op, and this trailer shows you how it's all going to work. We're promised this is all proper in-game footage as well, for those who care about such formalities.

Is it just me that think the weapons seems to be... a little weak? The sound is probably the the flaw in this case.
And thing that you need a number of hits on a tank with a rocket-launcher to destroy it is kind of old fashioned, couldn't it at least be unable to move after you shoot at the "wheels" from the side? =(
A bit more "realism" to the flamethrower wouldn't hurt... and another first person view skin for player #2...
So, now when I'm done bitching about the game I can talk about the positive things.
It looks amazing, I like the voice acting already.
Co-Op, finally. Hope they make it really good, and that something changes between single and co-op, but not in the Rising Sun kind of way where it seems glued on, two people need to do something at exactly the same time to advance.
But in GoW kind of way where there are different paths to go.
Kind of bold move to include a flamethrower and that kind of animation when you ignite someone, lets just hope the game get a fair rating.

Not hating on treyarch, just CoD3.
Everything in World at War looks so forced, the emotional response the game gives me is just flat. Cod 3 and this game seem to lack the subtlety that Cod 4 had.

Ive never really liked the call of duty franchise but for what it tries to do it does it well. To me cod is the michael bay of the video game world. You always know what youre gonna get and its gonna be fun but theres not gonna be much substance or depth. Which is why ive always thought it was odd that theyve never done co-op because that type of experience is something you want to do with your buddies where as a deep game is something youd like to do alone. So this should be worth a look.

@Ad-hominem: So you've pre-empted everyone's opinion by posting your own pompous and superior generality? That's showing them!!
On topic:
My first thoughts were that the animation was very stiff... like Counter-Strike back when. Then the action started, and it got a little better. However, was that what japanese soldiers did? Charge in screaming without any thought to combat tactics whatsoever? I'm going to give a, "hmmm.. probably not", but I wasn't there. It rings awfully silly to me though.
Granted, this is a point of view from someone that has a terrible time enjoying most FPS games as it is, so take it with that grain of salt. heh.

What's always made the CoD series great was being just another soldier. My favorite part of CoD4 was playing as the American soldier. Soap's portions were great, but they just didn't provide the same level of entertainment for me. If I want to be some super soldier or some member of a special forces unit, there's plenty of games out there for me to chose from. There are VERY few games that actually can pull off that one-soldier viewpoint. CoD being one of them.

This game looks like it is on the right tracks but a modern or even futuristic call of duty would even be better. All the developer has to do is copy the formula for online multiplayer(with barracks and points and all that) from COD4 and this game will be a guaranteed hit.

@RaptureScientist: I agree with RaptureScientist here. Compared to COD4 (So far at least) it doesn't look as awesome. I mean, in this you look like an ordinary soldier going through and killing stuff....haven't we already seen that before? In COD4 you were Soap along wtih a special forces unit rescuing hostages, proving support, and overall kicking ass.
I'm expecting high things from COD5, and if it doesn't provice the same experience as COD4 or a similar one then I'm going to steer away from it.

@Adam In Texas
Because, you know, Kamikazes weren't successful in destroying enemy ships as well as damaging enemy morale? What strategic purpose does running at your opponent so they can pump you full of lead hold? Oh right, none. The fighting done in the Philippines is often considered the most brutal part of the war due to the tactics used by the Japanese which involved no such thing as running into enemy gunfire. On the contrary, they concealed machine gun nests and took advantage of the natural terrain advantages. I don't expect them to ruin a perfectly good ambush by charging in with their guns not shooting at you.
As for the video, I really am trying to convince myself it looks good. It's nice to see so much going on in the background, but it also disturbs me how easily the characters are able to advance with little or no incoming gunfire. The previous games required that you took advantage of cover; they just stand out in the open and shoot. Where's the fun in that?

Pros:
Co-op looks like it could be fun.
Flamethrower looks graphically awesome.
Cons:
Character movement looks horrible (both first and third person). I mean, there is that two handed gun where one is off to the side (sorry, not a gun person), when he has that equipped the movement seems as tho you're floating.
Locataions all look pretty generic. Almost as if they just took textures from old COD games and slapped them in. Its hard to put my finger on, but they just look 'off'.
But thats really all I can see from such a small video. :/

The video is nice and CoD5 looks like it will be a fun game. I think the thing that helps the most is the fact that Treyarch is using the engine that was used in CoD4. It looks good but it should as a given. CoD4 looks great and is leaps and bounds better looking than CoD3 was.

@Adam In Texas: Most kamikaze pilots were nothing more than kids in their late teens, with little more motivation than being an apparent last hope for Japan. It's so tiring hearing people talk about Kamizake pilots being some sort of zealot. Perhaps some were, but most weren't. Just kids, really. I live 45 minutes away from the Kamikaze museum in Kyushu, and the letters to their parents are heart-wrenching. Not to be heavy-handed or anything, but most of what's believed about kamikaze pilots isn't true.

@MrBionic:
The Japanese had some crazy tactics in WWII. Especially if they went on suicide missions
Yeah, they were awesome Guerilla fighters, and a lot of times managed to stay concealed.
But, it wasn't uncommon to get ambushed by a group of Japanese charging at you with bayonets.
They had a totally different mentality than we did. If they could inflict even one casualty, they'd go as far as to charge with bayonets into gunfire (given the range is close enough to actually reach the enemy).
Look around the internet for war stories from veterans and such. Marines in the Pacific theater went through a living nightmare fighting the Japanese.
That said...that first scene of gameplay was intense. O_O

I just don't see anything to get excited over, COD4 had great level design and pacing. The combat was second to none and ridiculously entertaining. This just looks like a point-n-shoot game, these guys have little strategy going on and just seem to run into the next fight with no regard to what's going on.
I dunno if I'm gonna really bother with this one, I'll just wait until whatever IW makes next.

To me it looks boring. Too slow, and the voice acting is not good. I'll have to wait a little longer before i even think about buying it. It's now 9 months after cod4 came out, and it is still the most played game over live. I just don't think this game can pull that off. Cod 4 set the bar very high for a fps to be considered great, and this just doesn't cut it.

But if they bring a good multiplayer that has that essence of Cod:UO then I'll buy it and play the hell out of it, if not I will simple walk away and wait for the next anal fuckfest of a game that Activision throws at us.

I'm still not big on the decision to go with WWII yet again, but cooperative play is a natural step forward for the CoD campaign experience. No matter how polished the game gets the friendly AI can be annoyingly useless at times, or in some cases even hindering. Having an actual buddy along is a step in the right direction. If the enemy soldiers try and rush you like that all through the game it's going to make for a pretty broken experience...
I'd like to know if there will be two player split-screen online co-op.

The player animation looked pretty awful. None of the head bobbing that was present even in 3 and which certainly made CoD4 very immersive. The other animations looked like they'd been lifted directly from CoD3 as well.
The only thing that makes me think this could be good, is the attention to detail put into the flamethrower and the way flames move, which most games *cough* TF2 *cough* cock up.
I'm hoping it will be awesome, but I'll certainly be waiting for reviews before I buy it. Treyarch need to prove they can roll with Infinity Ward, and I really hope they can. An awesome CoD game every year would be like heaven for me.

I dunno, like most people, the animations looked stiff, it didn't look as immersive as CoD4, but I dunno, I'll have to play to see.

Looked alright. I didn't like that you could basically just run around with a flame thrower to kill everyone / everything. I did like that the tree went up in flames; that was pretty sweet.
I liked MoH: Airborne because it was something a little different; I wish CoD would do something different like that (but better?). Yes, I loved CoD4 because it was something different - modern war.
This might not appeal to everyone, but what about wars from other countries point of views, and not american?

Rocky docky teriyaki! Even if everybody's gripes aren't resolved, it's still the best game about the Pacific campaign. Plz stfu about COD4... you kids are spoiled.

@Adam In Texas: also, when japanese had no chances left, they did a bonzai attack, where they all rushed the enemy with the leader in front holding a katana. it fits that japanese would do that in the game

@Anaralia: I don't think TF2 was ever really shooting for "realism" to be fair.
I'm just happy with how much flame effects have improved in the last decade, going from completely unbelievable 2-D sprites to hardly believable particle effects to the things that we're seeing in this and Farcry 2. Makes someone like me very happy.

@Greencacktus: As Greencacktus pointed out- Gray Matter Studios are now part of Treyarch - and they've had their good games before. Spiderman 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein were great games developed in their studio- but my favorite remains CoD: United Offensive. Base Assault, to this day, remains one of my favorite game modes of all time. Requiring teams to use tanks to destroy a bunker, then infantry to plant the gave the game great teamwork without it being forced down your throat. CoD:UO became all my Programming class at school did- we would write our code in minutes then loadup some CoD for Base Assault.

@MrBionic:
We're not talking about the phillipines here. Have you ever heard of banzai charges? [en.wikipedia.org]
The Japanese used this tactic very often in ww2...it doesn't make sense, and seems stupid to run to your death..but this was part of their Bushido code.

Ive seen a real flamethrower up close and Id say they nailed the effect down pretty damned good of the thing firing.
Scariest shit in the world and thank god soldiers dont field them anymore.

Oh yea, CoD5 is totally lame and fake compared to the absolutely 100% accurately modeled everything in CoD4. In fact,CoD4 was so perfect, the collector's edition was originally slated to be a pair of boots and a 100lb. bag of sand.
Seriously, to echo space cakes, stfu about CoD4 already. It's a great game; everyone knows this. But it is not the be all end all of FPS'; and it certainly is not realistic. Most realistic shooter... I'm goin' with America's Army.

yeah, co-op? or two simultaneous single-player campaigns? to call what i've seen so far 'uninspired' is actually pretty charitable.

I've bought every COD since COD2 so I'll probably end up getting this. I just hope it's at least on par with COD3 so as you know my expectations are pretty low.

well. i liked this trailer. the way the plane crashed into the electrical circuits, the way the flames reacted to the environment, the people screaming due to the fact that they were burning alive. but id of liked to see future combat from this one. but i hope in the near future, infinity ward comes back with another knock out. and i'm tired from WWII, wheres nam, cold war, desert storm! COME ON PEOPLE, USE YOUR BRAINS!!!!!!!!!
