Crossing Streams With Ghostbusters The Video Game
Posted by Brian Crecente at 6:00 AM on August 2, 2008
Things I learned as a novice Ghostbuster:
Proton packs don't need reloading, but they do need venting or they'll overheat. Hmm, wonder if those clouds of steam could have something to do with the blood in my urine?
The PKE Meter is great at tracking down errant ghosts and seeing in low light situations but don't get caught holding one, other wise empty handed, when a ghost comes at you.
Slapping a ghost around a room, while fun and even necessary before trapping, really cuts into profits after you pay for the damages.
Sure Ghostbusting is fun, but tragically, watching someone Ghostbust can lead to nightmares, especially if you're seven and about to go to bed.
You can't start fires or blow stuff up with your unlicenced nuclear accelerator, but you can cross streams. Turns out that doesn't do anything really.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Yesterday I got a chance to take a July build of Ghostbusters: The Video Game for a test drive on my Xbox 360 debug unit. (The same one, it looks like, that McWhertor tried at Comic-Con) While it was loads of fun to play, it was also exceptionally short, more a tease than a taste.
The demo started out with my character, an entirely new trainee for the growing Ghostbuster mythology, standing in front of the New York Public Library in front of a mammoth crowd of cheering, chanting New Yorkers held at bay by police. After a short intro by Egon, Stantz and Winston, and a bit of surprise ghost action, we made our way inside to start off what turned out to be a training mission.
First up, learning how to use the proton pack. Pressing a button has you pull out your neutrona wand and brings up a small crosshair. (You can turn the crosshair in options) Pulling the trigger fires off a suitably impressive proton stream that wavers and flicks around the screen as you aim it. When the stream licks across objects it leaves a scorch path traced with angry red glowing lines. While I was able to mark up the wall and break a few small items I wasn't able to light up my friends. Instead the stream went dead automatically whenever I pointed it at another Ghostbuster and they quickly told me off.
After a bit of playing around a ghost, sort of a leaner, meaner, bluer looking version of Slimer, came zipping through the library's cavernous entrance. The graphics were fantastic, and surprisingly, a little creepy.
After the spectral display Ray tells me how to use the P.K.E. Meter. The one downside, you can't equip it and the wand at the same time. Hellooooo Doom 3. As soon as you equip the meter you also slip on a pair of paragoggles which allow you to see ectoplasmic activity, like ghosts flying straight at you when you don't have an F-ing wand in your hand.
Fortunately, this first intro to the meter has you walking around the entrance looking for activity and eventually tracking the ghost to other rooms. Eventually you meet back up with the other busters, who took another route, in the central reading room. As you walk in Ray and Egan are lighting up the place.
As you walk through the room things start flying all over the place, first desks and chairs and then books. As the books fly about they start to swirl back together and form a monstrous book golem. This first battle with a ghost doesn't last too long, but gives you a sense of how the streams work (crossing them doesn't seem to cause any issues) and how you can do things besides soaking ghosts in them. For instance you can also shoot pulses down your stream called Boson Darts and even use the capture stream (after the ghost is weakened) to slam the thing around the room.
I eventually tore the thing up so much it just dissipated, meaning I didn't have to tinker with my containment traps. Not yet at least.
After you take care of the golem you start to realise that the group is actually here after the Grey Lady, the ghostly librarian from the first movie. You spend a big chunk of the rest of the demo tracking her movements through the library. The tracking is actually kinda fun and filled with quite a bit of unexpected frights and supernatural signs, like things stacking and floating about. It's really done quite well.
The demo culminates with a battle with a pair of of these lean looking Slimers, capturing them pretty much requires using the containment traps. To capture a ghost you have to wrap it up in a capture stream and move it over the trap you've dropped. Once you do that it opens up and pulls the thing is. But before you can do that you have to weaken the ghost. The best way to do this is to slam the ghost all over the place, into walls, into the ceiling, the floor, objects. Eventually the thing goes limp and you can move it around. The whole thing felt very physical, which I think is what they were going for when they designed the mechanic.
I was always sort of looking forward to this game, but this first chance to put my digital paws on a proton pack and neutrona wand has me hungering for more. The thing is, it wasn't all about lighting up and capturing ghosts, which I think is a very smart move on the part of the developers.
It was nice to capture a tidbit of some of the stories that I hope will fill the game, making it an exploration of ghost stories. I was also delighted to find that the humour of the movie, at least some of it, seems to have find its way into the game. But what really surprised me was how the game actually gave me a few frights. In fact, I made the mistake of letting Tristan sit next to me as I played through it and it managed to make both of us jump in our seats several times. It actually frightened Tristan so much I had to tell him he couldn't play it. I think that's a good thing, not because I like to scare the bejesus out of my son but because this is a game that I don't think could thrive on humour and proton streams alone, it needs to explore the darker side of Ghostbusters as well.

@spacecoffin2: From what I saw on one of the Comic-Con demos is that Walter Peck and the City is actually footing the bill for the damages, so I don't think you'll actually be charged.
But then again, I didn't play the demo (sadly), so I can't say.

So a third person shooter with a Ghostbuster graphic skin :P Thats enough for me haha.
The only thing I din't like the sound of was paying for damage after a mission ( same reason I never got into Armored Core...everytime I pulled the trigger I felt like I was punishing myself ). I see where it could give some structure and tech to gameplay but I also think it could be totally inane and unbalanced.
Anyhow random blah blah blah...

@Brian Crecente: That and if there were dire consequences if ever it happend, it'd be irritating gameplay wise I expect. :)
Nice preview Brian. Seems like this is one of the few licensed gems. Makes me want it even more. Now we need to know if Activision is publishing this or not. Hopefully they release this within the year.
I'm certainly glad the two people from Kotaku who previewed it both gave it favorable impressions...

@sarcasmOD: We should probably leave the writers of the articles to the important info. Poor guy was just commenting on it. He clearly thinks it's awesome. This is a comments section after all.
In any case, as much as I'd like for time and space to collapse on itself or whatever I think that would cause a few problems. Gameplay is instantly more frustrating, and trying to portray that somewhat accurately is just ridiculously difficult. (I still kinda wish something would happen though...)

OH as for the PKE thing... thats the way it was in the movie though. You needed two hands to hold onto the wand as it was like a cannon going off. Single handed wouldn't be fun! However, i *could* see a PKE visor/hud being added later in the game. *hopes*

That's a very nice touch, adding in the damage to how much you earn on doing the job. Definitely an extra feature that they didn't need to do but decided to add a bit more depth to the game. Well done.

That's where we disagree. I would play anything with a sandbox element as long as it's decent. I've often said that if they made a Winnie-the-Pooh game where you can run free-roam around the Hundred Acre woods, I'd likely play it. Especially if you can pop a cap in that snooty rabbit's ass.

Good to know it's got the heeby-jeeby factor in it, as a kid the first Ghostbusters movie to me was funny but also kinda scary. That library lady at the beginning got me almost every time when she transformed.
I seriously can't wait for this to come out, I want to hear the good ol' sounds of the proton packs as I let loose with an unwieldy stream of positron energy. Probably the only time in video game history where I will actually want to play with an inaccurate weapon.

@Ashkihyena:
I wouldn't say that. "Assassin's Creed" worked quite well, "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction" is one of the few games from last gen I still play, and Spider-Man 2 was a thing of beauty.
The biggest problem sandbox game wannabe's have is giving you things to do in the space they give you. GTA obviously does well at this, and Hulk got around it by giving you a city full of stuff to completely destroy. Assassin's Creed failed in this aspect, of course, though just killing a random guard and either fighting your way out or running away was a game unto itself for a while.
Crecente has already said that the hunting and tracking aspect of the game was a lot of fun. You could easily fill hours running around the city, tracking activity and taking it out where you find it. Add to that getting "customers" calling you to their homes (ie: a prerendered level via a small load to zone in) and managing financing, upgrades, maybe even hiring eventually...
Hell, think about this: Make a Ghostbuster game in line of the old X-Com series. Managing research, upgrades, hiring and firing, going on missions, keeping the reputation up and income flowing. This, my friend, would be the Holy Grail of geeky gaming for me. I would have to have my wife force me to get off the couch for want to play this game more.

To be honest, I really do hope the game stays delayed because of publisher complications for just one extra year -- so long as they don't run out of funding! a big caveat, I know -- just so this game can get even more polished and kickass.

@PapaBear434: Oh I know, I know, I've been following this since November like everyone else :), I just mean that it's the first video game having anything to do with a movie (i.e. based on a movie franchise) that will defy the natural order. Let's look at the rankings of video games, shall we?
* POOR (this is where most video-based games have been to date)
* ADEQUATE (few)
* GOOD (few to none)
* GREAT (none)
o EPIC (those worthy of Dr. Venkman's vidi veni !@#$%)
Oh yeah: Star Wars games don't count, LucasArts having long been that shining ray of hope in a dark, tumultuous sea of movie-based games where most are $$$ titles, "shovelware" as they like to call them these days.
So yes, I realize Ghostbusters the (new) Video Game is somewhere in between Ghostbusters 3 (Aykroyd's original desire) and the best scenes grabbed from 1 and 2 for gamers' delight, but my point is that it's still a game based on, derived from, a movie. And that Ghostbusters: the Video Game might well be history's first truly EPIC movie-game. (Again, Star Wars games not included, otherwise the contest ended long, long ago.)

Sounds like its ready to be released as a demo on xbox live and psn. I mean, becoming a hugely downloaded and (going from what is written here) fun demo can't hurt it getting a publisher, right?

I specifically asked the guy at Comic Con
In the finished game in multiplayer you CAN cross the streams (the AI controlled guys will refuse to do it), and something WILL happen.
What he wouldn't say except that it'd be fun

This makes me really excited for the game. Oh boy. This is going to be what motivates me to buy a PS3, I think.

@Sunjammer: I know, I said the same thing, shame on Activision, this would've made up for that NES Ghostbusters game that they published way back when.

I was sold before.
I'm SO sold now.
I can't see this game NOT being released by year's end.

Thanks for the review. I've been wondering about this game. It drums up memories of my siblings and I bouncing around the backseat of my mom's car every time the theme song came on the radio. Now my son is really into ghostbusters. The gray lady scares him too.Any word of a rating yet?
I wonder if making cool 80's movies into games will be a trend. Much like Hollywood remaking old movies into new movies?
