D3 Invades PAX 2008
Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:20 AM on August 26, 2008
D3 Publisher will be bringing Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, Naruto and Bangai-O to the Penny Arcade Expo later this week.
This year's Penny Arcade Expo seems to be an interesting mix of announcements, unveilings and games that aren't just dated, but already available at stores. It's as if some of the publishers and developers in attendance haven't gotten the message yet: PAX is kinda a big deal.
Full D3 break-down on the jump. The only thing on the list I'm looking forward to messing around with this coming weekend is Galaxtix.
Bangai-O Spirits - Created by revered Japanese developer TREASURE, the twitch-fest shooter gameplay in Bangai-O Spirits includes more than 160 levels, punishing supermoves, exclusive content for the Western version, and a sensory overload of fireworks onscreen. Bangai-O Spirits boasts a powerful level editor tool that turns the gamer into the designer, local wireless multiplayer for up to four players and the pioneering new Sound Load Technology. Bangai-O Spirits exclusively for Nintendo DS is currently available at retail stores across North America for the suggested retail price of $US 29.95.
NARUTO:: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 - TOMY Corporation and D3Publisher's highly anticipated NARUTO: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 offers an all-new original storyline featuring the Anbu created for the North American audience and also features the largest character roster yet for the Clash of Ninja series. The latest iteration of the hit fighting game represents a huge progression from the previous game, including never-before-seen modes, improved visual presentation, and polished gameplay mechanics. The only four-player NARUTO fighting game series available,
NARUTO: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 for the Wii home video game console is anticipated for release this fall 2008.
NARUTO: Path of the Ninja 2 - TOMY Corporation and D3Publisher's NARUTO: Path of the Ninja 2 is the latest in the popular RPG videogame series offering a completely original storyline, expanded character roster featuring 30 playable characters and improvements to the battle system that will give players more options than ever before as they make use of the newly-added Squad Leader and Ninja Tag systems.
For those who want to test their mettle against fellow ninja across North America,
NARUTO: Path of the Ninja 2 will also provide the opportunity to earn points and special ninja cards as players prove their strength over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
NARUTO: Path of the Ninja 2 is anticipated for release on Nintendo DS this October 2008.
Puzzle Quest: Galactrix - A rich new addition to the beloved Puzzle Quest universe, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix incorporates a powerful blend of puzzle, strategy and RPG gameplay elements, into an all-new futuristic, science-fiction setting. Offering an innovative new hexagonal puzzle board for a wide range of strategic depth, a rich storyline and fresh gameplay elements, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix is a captivating new adventure to explore and conquer in Q1 2009 on Xbox LIVE Arcade, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.

@Tonx: They should bring games, just not games everyone can already play. You dont see old games at E3 or, typically, at GC or TGS.

Crecente, PAX is a big deal... but why would that mean that developers can't promote games already in stores? A few years ago, when games had a shelf life of about a month, then that criticism would seem in place. But you see the sales figures as much as any Kotaku reader - games are getting a longer sales life, and it's not limited to Nintendo titles and Sims games anymore.
Besides, save announcements for press conferences. This is a gamer conference - what's wrong with devs and pubs bringing games?

@alzheimers:
heh, I just spent many months playing the first Puzzle Quest on my PSP. Then I started playing it on my DS. I kind of like the PSP version better because of the visuals, but the touchscreen controls are great too.
I'm sad that they're not even making a PSP version this time.

The only question is, how many months of my life will I lose once Galactrix is officially released?

They claim Bangai-O Spirits is available at retail stores, but good luck finding a copy. I had to order mine on Amazon because it didn't come to any store in my entire city. It might be easier to find in a larger city but my place has a population of ~60,000. I'm probably the only person here who owns it...

@ShaggE: Why's it worrying you? It's match 3 still, gems now don't just fall from the top but from any side depending on how they were destroyed, excused by the fact it now takes place in space. They've shown a screenshot of the star map also, it was pretty massive, I just hope you can do more things outside combat this time, but I'm sure they'll flesh it out a lot.

Just wanted to add to my first response. IT'S TREASURE!
Of the Radiant Silvergun, Dynamite Heddy, Silhouette Mirage, Guardian Heroes, Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruaga, Sin & Punishment, Mischief Makers, Bangai-O (N64/DC) fame! BRING ON THE SPIRITS!

I love Puzzle Quest, but that screenshot concerns me. Please to not be fucking with the only match 3 game on Earth that I actually like.

From the screenshot Galactrix looks like a game of chineese checkers through the eyes of a bad Linkin Park video.

Just Galactrix? Come on! Bangai-O! I've never heard of it before this, but it's TREASURE so it has to be grand.

@Agnates: Brother, Bangai-O is made of so much win it should be illegal.
I pray every day to the sweet little infant baby Jesus that either XBLA/PSN will pick up a dual analog enhanced version of the Dreamcast game, or Nintendo will release the N-64 version (with dual analog classic controller support) for VC.
Please, gaming gods, hear my plea!!

@Tonx & Brian Crecente: I'm with Tonx here. Bring something that I can buy, because there is a crap-load of games that are out and I haven't tried.
For instance, despite all the hype for COD4, I decided I was fine with the games I had. Then I played it at my brother-in-laws house a few months after release and decided I had to pick it up.
[Grammar Nazis - should that have been there are a crap-load of games in the first paragraph? Games is plural, but crap-load is singular. It didn't look right either way. Discuss.]

A minor quip. Can we stop "invading" places? How about D3 politely attends PAX 2008?

@ShaggE: I'm playing Puzzle Quest on the PSP now. I started on it a couple of days ago and it rocks! It rocks so hard it it makes the prostitutes down the street to knock out their teeth to give the perfect blowjobs! (no teeth!)
This is new to me as well. As long as the RPG elements aren't taken out, then I'm all for it! My wife will flip when she this is released!
@LittleBigPlaneteer: What? Why aren't they releasing this on the PSP? Didn't it sell enough? I wish they'd reconsider on that one...

@skrame ☆: oo, toughie. i'd say either one could work, because you could refer to crap-load as the subject, or games, with crap-load as the modifier. well-played!
about PAX games that have already been released.. i found it a bit perplexing that Audiosurf is part of the PAX 10. i mean, even i own that. if it's just props that they put out a great, innovative game, then fine.. i just thought it odd.
