Dreamcast Development Still Profitable (Apparently!)
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on August 14, 2008
Just because SEGA gave up on the Dreamcast that doesn't mean everyone has! Take the Costa Rica-based Yuan Works, a two man development team. It's releasing a Dreamcast version of puzzle title Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles later this month/early next. This is a new version of the puzzle game it released for the GP2X handheld. Why the hell are they releasing it on the DC? Why not! Says developer Yuan-Hsi:
Well, it's a nice console with a dedicated fanbase. When I was younger, I would be extremely grateful when a Super Famicom (SNES) title arrived very late in its life, as it felt more like a tribute than a big commercial project. Many Dreamcast users around the world are really excited about this release! And the market, especially in Japan, is big enough to make it very profitable, which doesn't hurt one bit!On a more techie side, the DC is very robust, and supports true 240p RGB, which provides the definite 2D arcade experience. The controller suits the game perfectly, and there are practically no load times. There is also VGA and Arcade Stick support, so you can truly play this game any way you want on DC!
Those are good reasons. Damn, good reasons. Nice to see developers keeping the Dreamcast dream alive.

Yeah, I just read up on that.
If you go to the site, you can order a sprite of yourself to be in the game. I just did it myself. Pretty cool.

Dreamcast had so many great fun games all the capcom fighters, Crazy Taxi, Samba De Amigo. It's too bad Sega couldn't hold out for one more run at hardware with some broadband multiplayer.
I wish for a skies of arcadia re-release on any system. My game was bugged and on the second disc the screen went to black after I tried to enter a certain town to continue the story. Didn't have the time or the patience back then to start over my game to get back to that point. I was really enjoying the game overall like I did the Snes Final Fantasy's up to that point.

How I love the Dreamcast! Ahh, such simpler times. Lots of my favorite gaming memories arise out of that cranking, grinding, noisy-ass cheese wedge of a console. It seemed to hit the scene with a bunch of great colorful racing, platform, and adventure RPG titles just before Sony and Microsoft really started unleashing their Hollywood-style "event game" crap on the world.

I actually thought about this while I was working at games**p. I figured that if I ever made a game I would release it on the dreamcast because...why the hell not?
It wasn't a bad system. Sega just got stupid and didn't bother placing ANY anti-piracy software on the damned thing.
Now...can we get Lumines on dreamcast too? That would make me smile.

@ausroller:
You're correct. All you have to do to pirate dreamcast games is burn them to CD-R. That's it... and unfortunately its one of the reasons why the system failed :( Still, it's alright if you pirate DC games now ;)

Man, I just finished plowing through Skies of Arcadia again the other day. Interesting that people are still developing for the system.
I actually sold almost all my games and hardware a couple years ago, but kept my Dreamcast. I asked my best friend what that said about me, and he told me it says I'm a good person.

Where were all the Dreamcast fans when I was trying to get people to buy it and they were replying "I'm waiting for PS2." People got into more when pirating became simple but that didn't help SEGA one bit. :( Dreamcast was amazing. I'd play it all the time if some ass didn't rob my whole game collection.

This isn't a sudden idea out of the blue. There's been a few Dreamcast releases over the last few years published in this way and they've achieved modest success.
Play-asia.com is a good place to find these titles.

He didn't mean an Indiana game he meant Indy as in Independant game. eg: not made by one of the big companies.
Sorry to disappoint but I didn't want you searching for a game that doesn't exist.

I think Sega should revive the original Dreamcast... and remarket it, and sell the original console for 49.99, and introduce a new one with DVD playback for $79.99, and get a whole new string of titles for it, more developers. Why let Dreamcast rest when it's always alive.

@TheRubin: I still have a DC hooked up, but I wouldn't be able to play this game. I had a launch unit I bought on 9/9/99 with Soul Calibur that I loaned to someone and didn't get back. The replacement I bought from Gamestop won't play Mil-CDs, or game CDs that aren't Sega's GD-ROMs. Since Sega stopped making the discs, I will assume these are burned cds and not official.
