It's that time of the year again! That's right, it's EVO time. This weekend the Evolution 2008 fighter tourney finals will be held at the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas. That's right, Vega$, baby! Check out the trailer above and commend it on its new use of Hamasaki Ayumi. Registration still seems open; Evo link below.

Yes, it's necessary. It's probably one of the most legendary Evo moments in Evo's history. Hell, Daigo isn't even that much of a top player anymore (didn't he quit for a while?), and people STILL think he's the cat's pajamas because of that moment. The moment DEFINES "legendary".
I wanna go back. Haven't been there since 2005. I've wanted to go back each year, and each year something's come up. Here's hoping for 2k9. Can't wait to see how a couple of my friends are doing out there this weekend.

Evo 2008 has made quite a few mistakes. They included Brawl, a game quite early in its development, which is fine... but then they pissed off the entire Smash community they should be trying to appeal to. And they also decided not to include Guilty Gear this year for silly reasons, despite GG being one of the most popular fighters currently.
Now that Evo doesn't have sponsors, and the payout is determined just by the number of attendees, I can't see Evo 2008 being much of a success. I hope they fix their stupid rules for Smash for 2009 though, and I'll look forward to potentially participating sometime next year.

@duderdude2: After running Melee in 2007, where most people had a good time and one of the organizers even made a point on his blog that the Smash community was amazing, they decide to change the rules on people by not only turning items on, but turning on smash balls and hammers. Say what you want about it, but smash balls, etc, are so powerful the game starts to revolve around them after a while and it makes characters like Fox/Falco/Wolf and Sonic that much better (final smash = bye bye 2 stocks, not good for a 3-stock match), and the fact that they drop almost randomly doesn't make it much better. I'm not going to go much deeper, I'm just going to say that that's the way the community plays, we like it that way and we do have our reasons for it, but at the risk of me looking like an idiot, I'll let more knowledgeable people talk about it. Anyway, after a lot of rebuttals, the usual response was "deal with it, because we're not listening to you". To put it short, they completely ignored the smash community's input (though it's probably the very same community that is the reason Brawl is even there this year) despite people coming up on the forums, giving long, thought-out statements, and just getting ignored.
Honestly, they should have kept Melee for another year. It's already been established as a tournament fighter (people still play it today even though Brawl is out) while Brawl is still in its infancy. Maybe in a year Brawl will be better, but I still think it's too soon for it.
@Demonbird: Correction, it doesn't take a lot to enrage the 12-year old kids in the community that just joined because Brawl came out. When Melee first came out, the boards were a mess then, too. But most people eventually either got tired of the game and moved on to other things or they actually matured and got smarter. Then Brawl came out and it's the same thing all over again.
Pissing off those guys are easy. But in order to piss off some of the more respected members of the smash community, some of which really care about the game and have been playing it for a long time, that takes something.

@sarcasmOD: It's an absolute blast, and I don't even really like fighting games. EVO's a lot of fun because no one takes themselves too seriously (*COUGH* BULLSHIT MLG PRO GAMERS *COUGH*); it feels more like an afternoon with friends at an arcade, instead of a competition. The only way the event would be more perfect is if they had NBA Jam machines, and a couple of consoles running Super Bomberman and NHL 95. It'd be like I was 14 all over again.

Funny timing, I just dusted off the 'ol Dreamcast last week and been indulging myself with its Capcom Fighters. @ThatsMrOffDutyNinja: What would you want them to do? Get up and beat the Falco? Falco's trying to win, not gain "respect" by allowing his opponent to make a comeback. In a competitive tournament, the game knows no honor, only wins. Remember that, apply that, learn your game and you'd get more respect then making up your own rules and limiting what you can do.

Where does it end? Let's listen to all these people and their crazy "codes of honor" and end up with a game where you may only use the same character and light jab. 9_9

LOL @ Brawl. Not only did they horribly mess up the rules, but now the only people going are Wes and Ken/Manacloud, and they live in the West Coast. It's hilarious to see how nobody bothered to sign up for those broken rules. Serves them right. If you're going to include Smash you need to include the Smash community. Honestly, EVO is run by the Capcom community, for the Capcom community. Smash wasn't the only community screwed over, the GG community was screwed over as well- largely due to a dislike of the GG community.
There are other major fighting game tournaments out there- such as NEC, Final Rounds, and MWC, that work well and deserve more attention. (Based in Philly, Chicago, and Atlanta respectively) I will never attend an Evo due to its practices, but I am willing to attend those others.
Oh, and Wong had the same thing happen to him AGAIN about two weeks ago in England. He never learns.

the daigo clip at the end... one of the most impressive displays of skill ever recorded. Why do i say that? Well, there are ALOT of people (myself included) that can parry an extensive array of moves, a few less for super combos, but those are usually scripted, and in training mode. He did this IN A NATIONAL TOURNAMENT in the middle of a match, while losing, and everything on the line. Tell me that isn't legendary....

I'm hoping that trolling comment was some sorta' in-joke.
Otherwise, what the hell? He was just the first to say what's on the mind of every other competitive Smasher here, newbie or crusty old vet (I'm the former). There's no point in going further into the matter, other than to add that EVO organizers ASKED the Smash community what they should do, and then did whatever the hell anyways. THAT'S insulting.
As far as GG goes, I don't understand the whole "community not taking themselves seriously" thing. Some top East Coast players came to Rutgers for a tournament we held there in April (including someone apparently super-awesome named Kyohei), and they were awesome. From what I heard, nobody was late to a match, and the whole thing ran smoothly (aside from the match-caller needing a bit of friendly assistance). They had fun, but it sounded like they took themselves pretty seriously.@
ZinkO: Beat Incursion:
Really? Those are the only two big names coming to EVO? Guess I'm not surprised. I know for a fact that everyone here in the Northeast has said "hell no," though we speculated M2K would go since winning money for Smash is his destiny.

Quite right. GG, I think, certainly deserved a spot. Even with their conduct at Evo 2k7, they've certainly done very well after that, well enough to earn a spot IMO.
@Superhacker75mil:
Yeah, SRK has so much dislike for the Smash commmunity it's almost comical. After all that last year about how great the ommunity is and how much it grew, then this. I bet there's a lot of bad feeling now. I really don't know what they were thinking. Surely they didn't believe that the few dozen or so SRK Smash players knew the game better than the 100k SWF crowd?
In any case, I'm basing my assumptions on attendance on the list of pool assigments, so there might be a few people not on that list, but still. Half the people there don't even have tags.
I just counted, and there's a little over 100 people signed up for brawl, but very few of them are just brawlers. Nearly all are playing two or three Capcom games too. Including JWong, for what it's worth.

The fact they have SSB tournaments (which for me isn´t even a fighting game) instead of KOF really bothers me, but since is an US based tournament i´m not really surprised; If this were a latin tournament, you would see KOf all over the place, because is a really good game and it is the most played fighting game over here in Mexico (that´s why SNK always do mexican fighters)...

SRK heads will believe black is white if the head honchos there tell them that. Never underestimate the power of brainwashing.
As for GG, they should move their nationals to FRXI. GG community is strongest in the Southeast (which is the area of the country that the Capcomites shitted on for ages, so things developed differently there). It's also why SNK games have some strong followings in the Southeast as well- North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida have SNK scenes, North Carolina especially.

@ThatsMrOffDutyNinja: Not the same thing. Everything is allowed within the boundaries set forth by the game and the rules agreed upon by the competitive community surrounding it. Using a perfectly legal tactic to beat your opponent is a thousand times better than physically hurting them because you're mad you lost. And not using the tactic when you could have is tantamount to taking it easy on your opponent. No "honor" in that.
The only "honor" is derived when competitors face each other with everything they have, holding nothing back, in their pursuit of victory.
On topic: wish I could go to Evo this year. Too bad the Brawl ruleset's so gimped -- and that the game's balance is so broken :( (so far, at least)
