Extent Of Dead Rising Wii's Waggle Explained
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 11, 2008
We know, Dead Rising on Wii looks different, but it's going to play different too. It's got waggle! And not just any waggle: Capcom are bringing Resident Evil 4's waggle to 2006's zombie mall simulator. Gun combat will work exactly the same, with pointing of the Wii Remote for aiming and a shake of the nunchuk for a reload. More shaking is required if you're grabbed by a zombie, however, because you'll have to shake as if your very life depended on it to get out of it. The shaking motif continues with melee weapon use: you can shake the bat while swinging to build up some extra charge. Aside from that, you can shake to shake, and shake twice if you want to shake and bake.

@ShaggE: ah what a line!
So Resident Evil 4 Wii's excellent aiming system is called waggle as well? I thought it maybe used the pointer? whats that? it did?

"...And a shake of the nunchuk for a reload."
There was reloading in Dead Rising? Far as I remember, every gun just had a set number of bullets and disappeared when they were depleted.

It's a real shame that this controller which can mimick almost any gesture has been reduced to shaking like an epileptic.
Why not various punching actions? Pushing actions?

I owned the original. I was really enjoyed with it, can't wait to try this one. First off its going to fix that stupid problem with me playing the game for a hour dying and realizing I didn't save it, and having to start the WHOLE THING over. Second its going to fix control issues. People always say "Not as much zombies? CRAP!" But really the only reason you needed THAT much zombies were because of the clunky controls. Who needs AIM when everything in a 360 degree radius is a hostile! Lastly, while using random items was fun, shooting is every important when it comes to zombie games, and Dead Rising more then lacked in that department. It was more effective to use a lipstick advertisement as a weapon then it was a gun. Thats saying something.
All and all this sounds like its taking the awesomness of RE4, and just saying "Have fun!" Sense its using the same engine, we may even get smarter zombies! I really can't wait to play this port, just another outing for my Wii :)

@Zaxxon Q Blaque: Sorry, sorry, forgot... I'll be criticising Brawl next, if I'm not careful! Dear me!
I'd hope you could get some 1:1* movement with baseball bat swinging given this motion plus I've been hearing so much about.
*I have no idea what this means.

With so few zombies onscreen, waggling to charge a weapon seems almost pointless.
Plus it'll be a huge distraction against some of the more energetic boss fights. You wanna avoid a chainsaw-wielding clown while trying to waggle up a melee weapon?

@Shiryu: Me too. My thoughts exactly. RE4 controls in a mall sounds crazy delicious.
@excel_excel: Luke loves the word waggle. Can you really blame him? It never gets old. For over 2 years now and yet it's funnier every time. Oh wait...
@OGheart: Sounds better to me. Better gun aiming, better save system, less otis? Yummy!

I hate the "waggle" phrase enough as it is, but it's especially annoying when it's associated with the remote being used as a pointer. It's a different function.

I'll probably be picking this up.
RE4 pointing with the Wii was perfect, this will be awesome as well.
As for calling the reload action waggle... I thought it was perfectly implemented on RE4 so if it's the same, then awesome.

@Shiryu:
I'd kind of rather have that on the Wii than RE5, to be honest.
That said, I know I'll be buying this. Dead Rising was great. Resident Evil 4 was fucking AWESOMEx10 on the Wii. So mixing the two together will hopefully yield something that is at least a minimum of SUPER AWESOME.

@supremesonic: Yeah, there wasn't any reloading. I guess it's a new feature or an error on Luke's part.
@Suda51: I had trouble with aiming at first but there's some setting you can change that will cause him to aim in the direction he was facing and not the direction the camera was facing. Once I changed this setting I had no prob (well except for the fact that you can't move while aiming).

Sure, less Otis is good. I liked the mechanic of him telling you where the survivors are, but my understanding is that due to the alteration of the rescue system, he will be less "insistent", which can only be a good thing. Having that transponder ringing CONSTANTLY was incredibly annoying.

Yeah, there was no reloading in the original. You just dropped the gun once it was empty. Not to mention that most of the guns were pretty much worthless once you got a few levels under your belt, as the attack boosts only worked on melee weapons. The guns were really only useful for taking down the psychos, and even then, once you got the mini chainsaws you could drop them in 4 to 5 swings.
Anyway, more Dead Rising 2, less of this.

Everything that made dead rising awesome is gone from the wii version it seems. All they did was dumb it way down technically and added RE4 controls. You would be better off playing RE4

Why do people keep bringing up Resident Evil? Dead Rising was pretty dissimilar to RE, past or present; the only real similarities being zombies and Capcom. Dead Rising was a tongue-in-cheek almost arcade-esque brawler at its very core, with VERY limited gunplay.
I think this game would have been MUCH better suited mimicking all the various weapons. Bowling ball, baseball bat, golf club, etc. I think everything in Wii Sports is a weapon in that game; would've been great.
