Fallout 3 Goes Public at PAX
Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:00 AM on August 29, 2008
We already knew that Bethesda was going to be at Penny Arcade Expo this week, but we weren't sure what exactly they were going to be up to.
Turns out that PAX will be the first chance the public will have to play Fallout 3. Now keep in mind that there is expected to be more than 50,000 at the show, so if you want some hands on time with what many consider to be the game of the year you better get there early and be prepared to wait.
Bethesda says they will have six kiosks setup in their booth for people to play on and a number of developers will be on hand to talk to folks. The booth will also include what we're told is a pretty sweet Fallout 3-themed Airstreme and the folks will be handing out Vault Dweller Survival Guides.
On Saturday Bethesda will be showing off a conducting a rather lengthy Fallout 3 demo in the Main Theatre at 2:30 p.m. Finally, on Saturday night Bethesda is sponsoring a Post-Apocalyptic Movie Night at 9 p.m. in the Raven Theatre. The movies shown there will be the ones voted on by the Penny Arcade fans. Currently it's looking like 12 Monkeys and The Road Warrior are in the lead.

After going to E3, I can tell you no game is worth the lineup wait to just to play a couple months earlier. I mean if you feel its worth it to wait 3 hours in line for 10-15 minutes of time for a game coming out in November? then by all means do so.
But really I don't see how great the experience can be playing in a noisy room with 150 people waiting impatiently in line behind you.
Even if you come out of the show saying "I've played a game nobody has played", in three months that nobody will change to hundreds of thousands.

Game of the year, and it's been mostly hands-off demos? Sounds a bit presumptuous to me. You could just as well say <insert unreleased game here> is the GOTY.

My manager got to play Fallout 3 yesterday at a Game Crazy exclusive convention in Vegas. He simply said it was awesome, and considering that was the only text I got from him the entire week he has been there I'd say it must have been really really good. I simply can't wait for this game. Sadly I will now have to wait to play Deadspace since they are both set to come out at the same time.

Did Gilliam do "12 Monkeys"? Everyone says what an awesome director he is, but the only thing I've seen is "Brothers Grimm," which I wouldn't exactly consider a great film.
Oh, and Fallout 3: meh.

@ShadowFFVI:
youve never been to PAX have you? cause the lines there are the shortest ever, except for the first day line waiting on friday, you only see 2-3 people waiting for games.

@peAr nectAr: hey, i liked Brothers Grimm. it's much better on the second viewing. the only thing i really didn't like was, oddly enough, the CGI. oh, and Lena Headey! how could i forget that she was in that? i love her.
12 Monkeys, however, is one of the very few movies during which i have fallen asleep.

@peAr nectAr: Gilliam is fucking brilliant. Brothers Grimm was a POS. Watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Brazil. And hopefully, one day, one beautiful glorious day he'll direct Good Omens (Pratchett and Gaiman) with Johnny Depp as Crawley

@Eville1 says SKUse me a sec.: Oh yeah, I've seen "Fear and Loathing." Duh. I didn't realize he directed it though. And most everyone tells me to see "Brazil," so I guess it's about high-time I did that.
@geekgrrl: I didn't say I hated it, I just said I didn't think it was that "great," and left it open for interpretation. I do remember the CGI being lackluster, but admittedly I am a fan of both Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, so that was a treat to see them together.

I have only heard good things about this game since the media got some hands on time a while back. And by good I mean phenomenal, especially after Fallout 3 stole the show at E3.
Prior to E3, I wasn't interested in this game at all. Then I got to see the little demo they ran during Microsoft's press conf and I can actually pinpoint the exact moment I went from "meh" to "OMG SWEET TITTIES!! I Can't wait for this one!"

1) I knew...KNEW...Bethesda was going to go public with Fallout 3 at PAX. One of my main reasons for going. I'm f'n thrilled that, in theory, I might get a chance to get my hands on it for a few.
2) 2 days ago, I sawr a tanker that could haul that right. You wanna get out a here? Tawlk to me.

@Eville1 says SKUse me a sec.: As much as I am completely insane about Pratchett and Gaiman, Good Omens fell far short of the mark. Gilliam is a god though. Even when he fails at a movie it's glorious. See: Lost in La Mancha.
