FCC Confirms New PSP Model On The Way
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:30 PM on August 14, 2008
It's not the PSP-3000, but it's damn close! Documents published on the FCC's website have confirmed that Sony are to release a new model of the PSP, the PSP-3001. Before you ask, yes, the new PSP looks...a lot like your old PSP. There appear to have been no changes made to the exterior of the unit, nor to its core specifications, meaning the changes will be for less sexy things like cost-reduction (by using newer, cheaper components). Course, if that is your idea of sexy, there's a mountain of paperwork you can read up on at the link below while you get yourself all lathered up.

The 3000 and 3001 models will most likely be nearly exactly the same, the only difference between 2000 and 2001 models is the region, models with the serial 3001 will be released in America while models with 3000 will be released in Japan. Australian models will be either 3002 or 3003

well, compared to the features you mentioned mine aren't important. But I figured they'd improve all the things you said in the next model. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Didn't they just do the whole, 'newer, lighter PSP' deal?
If there's no real performance upgrades, I guess it can only mean they found much, much cheaper parts.
Otherwise, why the hassle?

@NeoAkira: Personally I don't give a damn about that stuff right now. Adding in all that is just pricey at this point.
They need to improve everything else they already put in the system like better battery life(without needing to replace it), better external speakers, and better headphone sound output.
I still got a PSP-1000 model, and I sure as hell didn't see anything worth upgrading for. I will upgrade before FFXIII Agito and Kingdom Hearts:BBS comes though, so this is somewhat good news.

*shrugs* I got my PSP a month ago, right in the midst of the PSP 3000 rumors. The reasons I got it were simple: there was an open box one at my Futureshop for 149.99; I didn't want to wait for an unknown amount of time for the new model; the changes wouldn't be drastic considering the recentness of the 2000 model, and I worried that the current ways to mod the PSP would not work with the new model.
As of now, I'm happy with my decision. Cheaper versions are attractive, but if it means cheaper parts, it might also lead to an increase in defects. I'd rather own a used premium product, than a new inferior product.

I wonder if the 3001 will do 802.11g from the beginning.

@Aname: Well, I was in the pocket, you know, chillin' while he was at the pew, when I notice this nice little piece looking at me (although I'm sure he'll use different words for her). Sure, it looked like her eyesight was limited, but I could tell she was interested. I walked casually over and came to attention. I could tell she was nervous. She must've been new to this sort of thing. Anyway, I move to wrap my finger around her and stroke her side. She let out a slight anxious shudder as I moved in all the way. Suddenly I hear footsteps and what sounds like the priest coming, and then the gal I was with gets all nervous and vomits all over and-
*stabs*
What the fuck?! NO. Do you want to end up like what the priest did to the "gal"?

I actually bought 2 PSPs. I got my slim when my phat's battery was reaching that crucial Li-Ion 3 year mark and had been used pretty much every day since I got it so while most things played well, God of War would suddenly shut off with 2 bars of charge showing. Also, to preserve my phat, which could make Pandora's batteries to hack the slim.
Now... I can see no reason to buy another. And I bet they patched the jigkick battery backdoor as they have on newer batteries as well. Even forgoing piracy, Sony needs to see there are some great strengths added to this thing by homebrew, such as e-book readers and better Internet radio streamers. They could maybe let emulators fly under the radar too if they ever allowed homebrew.
...but they won't. They're not Apple here...

Something not hackable? Did you really post that? Let me clean my glasses...
Posted 3:05 AM 15/8/08
Don't you just love how people complain about company's fighting piracy being stupid, and then turn around to complain about how the console/handheld doesn't have a very good library? Maybe it's because, I don't know, the games are being pirated and devs don't want to lose money?
It's because of hackers and pirates that we have firmware updates and useless hardware revisions. I, for one, don't blame Sony or Nintendo for trying to protect their intellectual property.
I do have a PSP phat and a PSP slim (the faster load times were incredibly sexy, and I kept the phat as a back-up), as well as a DS Lite, and a healthy collection of games for both (probably 10 games and 4-5 UMD movies for the PSP, and 12-15 DS games). Gaming in and of itself has always been an expensive hobby. So quit whining about Sony trying to prevent your hacking with firmware and hardware revisions.
Has it occurred to anyone that if Sony wasn't always fighting piracy in its firmware updates, then maybe we'd have a lot of these features that everyone is bitching that they want...
Blah, pointless rant because I know no one is going to read it.
