Final Fantasy XIII Demo Will Last More than Two Hours
Posted by Owen Good at 1:00 AM on August 18, 2008
PlayStation Universe reports that Famitsu magazine reports that the PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy XIII demo will clock in at more than two hours, which is longer than the CGI movie bundled with it, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. The bundle releases March 2009.
The demo will be on a separate disc (ah ha! Blu-Ray has its limitations too ya know!!!!) The demo will be based on the opening to the game, naturally. Wouldn't be smart to spoilerize everything. Two other tidbits, I'll fess up and say I have no clue what these mean so I'll just quote verbatim: "One of the female characters, refered to as 'Pigtails Girl', has been through some tough times". And "Mr. 33CM's real name is based off of weather as well".

@Solid_hedgehog: Have you ever played a FF game before? FMV's have always been pretty few and far between. This isnt MGS, you probably get 1 every hour or two and they last anywhere from 1-2 minutes.

Single layer Blu-Ray disc is 25GB, dual layer is 50GB. Single layer discs can contain approx 2-4 hours of high def video.
Higher layer discs aren't used much yet, but working quad-layered(100gb)prototypes have been made.
(sorry, but sometimes I just can't resist feeding)
Is there any difference between the regular Advent Children movie and Advent Children Complete? Or is this just a way to sell more copies, by throwing in the demo?

good, an rpg demo that doesn't spoil every ability in the game with near-end content. I hate when they do that. The blue dragon one was the best in recent memory since you didn't get corporeal shadow finishers until the 3rd disc.
FF XIII needs to be the second coming of Jesus though if it wants to deliver on its own hype. Can't wait to try it!

@EGBTMagus: I love how everyone tells everyone else what is good and what isn't when its a matter of opinion. Just cause someone liked something doesn't mean that everyone should. I loved 8, liked 9 but couldn't stand 10. Wasn't a huge fan of 7 either. Everyone has their opinion, yours isn't the only one.

7,8,9 were awesome games, I loved them all. 7 is actually my least favorite out of those 3 but thats besides the point. I was so hardcore FF and when 10 came out I was so disappointed. Just didnt do it for me, and neither did any of the sequels after.

Final Fantasy is a successful experiment from the Japanese: People will buy anything as long as it has some nice CGI cut-scenes.
Seriously, after IV (II in the states), the series was utter Jap-scat and fill with more poufy she-males and convoluted whimsy than a pride parade. I guess as long as people are distracted by the sparkles, it doesn't really matter.

I think it has more to do with SE wanting to put the demo on a separate disc than disc limitations. Because of piracy perhaps? (Blu Ray disc movies are now pirated).
I used to love the FF games. The last I played was FFX. I find that I don't have the patience to play JRPGs most of the time. That said, I might try this out if I can buy a PS3 in time. Then again the way they're developing this, it might take late next year before they release it. As long as GoW3 and whatever Team Ico's doing is released by the time I buy it. Then I'm good!

Honestly, if it weren't for the FFXII demo, how many of you guys would have bought DQVIII? (I know my brother only bought it because of that, and we enjoy DQVIII more than we do FFXII.)

Awesome, this sealed the deal on my upgrade to the HD version of FF: AC. I've got a PS3 and an HDTV, so why not show off their capabilities with a movie I dig?
I enjoyed the movie for what it was - an entertaining end to a game that pulled me into console gaming. Getting a demo with said movie, regardless of length, is an awesome bonus.
As for everyone spewing their opinions as though everyone around them should bend to their will: Get over yourselves. No one cares what FF games you enjoyed the best, nor do I care if you hate the movie or game series as a whole.

while a movie and game is possible on the same disc. they do they consideration that ps3 is not the only BD player out there, so it might be compatibilty issue to separate them. Also the way BD games and stand alone BD movies are read are different excutables. movie is a movie, game is game.
thats the reason why. FF7 is a movie first package, a game with a movie in it. two different things.

I fail to see how the demo would be a selling point. Demos are meant to be free, allowing people to test the product before they buy it. Hell, a lot of less high profile games let you download the whole thing but with a timer or a lock on some content and then you pay if you like it and have the restrictions removed. Only fanboys fall for demos that you can't get without paying.
Then again, AC in Blu-Ray IS for fanboys anyway.

@islandknight:
It is possible to have both a Bluray game and movie on the same disc. That's how the collector's edition of Hard Boiled was made (despite the movie not being Bluray quality).
My feeling is, the disc is separate because eventually they plan to remove that "bonus" demo disc away from the package. Another possible reason as stated above is the fact that Blu-ray movies aren't region free, while the game demo most likely is. They would have to put in separate Blu-ray movie discs for the different regions.
While I know Owen was just joking, I don't expect that kind of behavior from the writers here. What would be the point? It's only good as a flamebait/trolling comment. I mean just look at what the comments section turned into, because of that one immature comment. Do try and cut down on the flamebait guys, it's not your first time. There's a fine line between making small jabs, and creating flamebait statements.

correct me if i'm wrong, wouldn't the demo and bluray movie have different formats? much like a game dvd and a video dvd? so seperate discs shouldn't be suprising...? idk, thats my 2cents, not worth a lot since i don't know shit about all the technical aspects of blurays/dvds

a 2 hour demo...? That actually puts me off playing it. I want a demo to be around 15-20 minutes. It gives you a taste of the game. If it's 2 hours long that just means when I play the actual game there will be 2 hours I have already played, so 2 hours of skipping cutscenes, battles etc.

New bluray movies are 4980yen for regular editions here in japan, where this demo is being released. That about $50. Its the main reason I hate bluray as a format, not only do they bill you more for rentals, but buying is expensive as hell and the quality isnt all that great. Ill stick with downloads and regular dvd myself.
In anycase, I fully expect this to be $60 or maybe even $70.(the equivelent of that is.)

Wow, some people really are dense when it comes to Blu-ray disc. Do you really think they would compromise the quality of the movie just to put a 2 Hour demo on the same disc? Most high quality BD discs are 40+GB due to the extremely high video bit rates and the uncompressed LPCM sound. Like, you couldn't figure out this simple fact?

The disc also has previews for a number of games including FFXIII Versus, Agito and Parasite Eve 3 among other videos. Why does the comment section always turn into 'why my favorite Final Fantasy game is great and why the others suck?' You've got some great fans Square. The type who can't even show enough class to respect other peoples preferences and know their words aren't facts.
@josh11223: Yes, for the time being this is only a Japanese release, but it is more likely to show up in other countries then not. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete is almost guaranteed to be released outside of Japan, and what better way to entice even more people to buy this then with an exclusive demo? I don't see any reason why Square-Enix wouldn't want to take advantage of an opportunity to sell more copies of a re-released film then they normally would.
Either way, even if this does come stateside I personally won't be buying it. I'm content with my regular edition of AC and I'm not anxious enough to play the demo of a game thats practically around the corner.

Plus a game is a game, a movie a movie. Just like darktorns said they could have two different executable different than the Strangehold one which was more of a bonus feature.
I wonder how much of this Demo is playing time though and how much is cutscenes. Either way, I want to get into FF13 because it looks great but I am terrible at RPG's, my weakest point in gaming besides Stealth.

Square has always relied on their demos to help sell their less popular products.
FFVII demo - packed w/ Tobal #1
FFVIII demo - packed w/ Brave Fencer Musashiden
FFIX demo - there was none
FFX - packed w/... OK, this was an exception, it came in a Sony PS2 Jump Pack
FFXII - packed w/ DQVIII only in NA and EU; DQ needs all the help it can get outside of Japan
Anyway, these new 20 year long development cycles are murder. Ah, the good ol' days... Square would announce and unveil the next FF, three months later you'd get a playable demo, and then six to nine months after that the game would come out. That was like instant ****ing gratification compared to these days. Le sigh...
