Gary Oldman Answers Call of Duty
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:20 AM on August 21, 2008
Activision is adding another famous name to Call of Duty: World At War. Joining accomplished shouter Kiefer "Damn It!" Sutherland, who plays Sgt. Roebuck in the Treyarch developed World War II game, will be Gary Oldman. The co-star of The Dark Knight and The Professional will voice one of the characters in the Russian portion of the World at War campaign.

Oh, and one more..my favorite actually from the Professional. "I like these calm little moments before the storm."
It's strange seeing him play a good guy in Batman. He's one of the best villians out there.

"Tell you what I do like though; a killer. A died in the wool killer. Cold blooded, clean, methodical and thorough. Now a reall killer? When he picked up the ZF1 he would have immediately asked about the little red button at the bottom of the gun."
I heart Gary Oldman so much.

So these two guys are awesome, but I feel they are trying to compensate somewhat for the lack of having anything truly amazing in their follow up to the best FPS of 2007. Yeah it will be good most likely and better than the abysmal COD 3, but still, Infinity Ward, they are not.

btw, why not let Gary Oldman do a Russian voice in COD? the only time i've heard his real voice is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Leon is one of my favourite films of all time. I recognised the scene from the thumbnail :) Been a fan for so long my copy of it is on VHS.
But yes, it may well be a waste of time getting these guys in for the Treyarch game, but it will sell on the strength of the co-op play alone. I probably won't pick it up though - I'm so sick of WW2 even co-op won't save it.
I want to know if they're going to have Keifer say "General infantry" at one point though, as a hark to one of his parts in the Simpsons :)

Heh, checking his imdb it looks like he's already done a few videogames, including a legacy character in the Spyro series (I wouldn't know).

Holy shit, Oldman is an incredibly talented actor. Like one who probably studies theory and nuance to multi-layer his characters. I can't believe he's doing a videogame, and I don't say that to be condescending, just that typically those types of actors have kind of a holier than thou attitude about their craft.

The photo of Gary Oldman is one of his best performances in a film and one of my favourite films, namely Leon. His other notable part was as the pimp Drexel in True Romance.

@Bernoulli: He might be fantastic, but he'll be in just about anything. I think it's a U.K. thing: a lack of pretension about which roles you choose. (I feel the same way you do about Alan Cumming.)

A few celebrity voice actors do not make the game. Animation does this too as a way to interest the ambivalent crowds (what's more awesome, a cartoon shark or a cartoon shark voiced by Robert DeNiro?) but film actors != voice actors and it can lead to some weak performances. Didn't Yahtzee make a point of this with Ron Perlman in what's-that-game?

Man I love Gary Oldman! So why do I hate it that he's in a CoD game?
Games don't need Hollywoood actors to voice their characters. I don't really want to be able to recognize the voice cast, as it totally breaks the fiction and immersion factors of a game.
When it's Patrick Stewart playing a Emperor, and he's dead less than ten minutes into the game, it's fine. It's a great setup.
Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman (presumably) in my squad, chewing my ear off for the entire game? No fucking thanks. I sincerely hope Treyarch handles this better than I expect them to (I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in their work, regardless of who's engine they use).
I bugs me enough when I recognize Keith David or 'generic protagonist voice guy' for the umpteenth time in every other game I play these days. Even companies known for imbuing story into their games make the mistake of overusing stock VO talent and misappropriating known talent for overly familiar and archetypical character roles.
Seriously- how many game universes populated with space Marines does Kieth David get to be in? Regardless, there's gotta be more than three voice actors out there capable of sounding generic enough to be the players' in-game voice. Let's go find them for chrissakes!

@Eville1 says SKUse me a sec.: My favorite line from Léon was "I win" in the Russian Roulette scene... I'm also
I'm one of those obsessives that refuse to call things by the names their altered versions receive... It'd Braindead, not Dead Alive. It's Gunnm, not Battle Angel Alita. It's Léon, not the Professional.
@kylo4: Dumbledore? How the hell is Oldman supposed to play Dumbledore? Way too young... Though he'd have probably made a better Dumbledore that Michael Gambon, anyhow. Man... I sorta wish he'd been the new Dumbledore now... Though, I'm sure there has to be SOMEONE tehy could have found to really replace the late Richard Harris...

Uh! He ruined my suit!
Oh god, Gary Oldman is up there with Malcom McDowell for greatest bad guys. So awesome. Man, I almost had a heart attack in DK, what a close call for one of the best characters. And Leon? Such a great movie. Great cast, story, acting, Oldman, action, Oldman, Oldman, and spectacular Oldman.
I really hope this is good though. I know it's Treyarch, but if it turns up bad, don't say "I told youuuu..."

@Erwin: The suit scene reminds me of a bad injury I had with my leg also involving my favorite pair of shoes.
"Oh my god your knee has a hole in it!"
*notices the hole on his left shoes toe*
"Oh fuck me! My favorite shoes!"
"What about your knee?!"
"Fuck my knee it will grow back, the shoe wont!"
conversation ends right there with the other person.
Ah good memories indeed. Cept thanks to that my left knee is still a bit screwed up at times even to this day about 11 years later.
