Ghostbuster The Video Game Very Much Alive, Sitting on My Desk
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on August 1, 2008
This is downright odd.
Just two days after word hit that Activision was taking inventory of future Sierra titles, including Ghostbusters The Video Game and Brutal Legend, and trying to decide which to publish and which to mothball, I received this in the mail.
That's right, a preview copy of Ghostbusters The Video Game. The letter, written by the Evil PR Ninja Monkey (that's actually his title) at Activision Blizzard says that the hands-on preview code is not embargoed and that I can write about it as soon as I'd like to.
According to the included fact sheet the game has a spring 2008 release date, but of course since the sheet isn't dated I have no way of knowing how accurate it is.
Sounds like someone is trying to reassure the gaming public. Now about that Brutal Legend code?

Cue the news of an Internet leak of an early build of Ghostbusters in 3...2...1...
(not Crecente's copy.. but I am sure we'll be hearing about this soon)
This is awesome, though!! Hope it plays well...

@Refused:
I'm sure SCEA would disagree, but they probabaly had little to nothign to do with who got the rights.
It's like spiderman movie games on other platforms. You'd think Sony would have given it tot heir own studio, but they didn't.
It's strange to think of, but Sony's individual parts rarely talk to each other. They might as well be seperate companies altogether in that reguard.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Sony Pictures and SCE are almost totally separate from what I gather. I doubt Sony will make any money directly from 360 sales. If they wanted to do that they'd let Little Big Planet go multiformat or put LocoRoco on WiiWare.

I'm really itching for this game. Is the stages mission-based? Cover mechanics? I think a quick Q&A or FAQ after your impressions are needed. :)
@karasu is my homeboy: Yeah. It seems like they're confident of the game mechanics already to send out an early build. Didn't McWhertor say that the demo he played was nice?

I'm especially curious how the game is after some extended hands-on time with it. I can't remember if it was here or somewhere else that I read that some of the objectives were kind of unclear, so I'm curious as to whether or not a quieter environment than E3 would help with that.

Uh, I doubt many people are going to buy a PS3 solely for Ghostbusters. Making it go multiplatform means more money for Sony. If you don't think that's a good business decision, then I guess you suck at business. Think about it. This isn't Final Fantasy or something. It's Ghostbusters. It's no AAA IP here.

What really amazes me is that Sony own the Ghostbusters IP. But instead of handing it over to their own studios for a PlayStation brand exclusive, Sony Pictures sold the gaming license to Vivendi! And now the multi-platform game is looking for a publisher!
WTF is wrong with them? Why worry about MS stealing your exclusives when you give the chance of others away yourself?!
Sony really are the architects of their own troubles. Say Sir Howard, how is that "improved communication/cooperation between Sony divisions project" going......?

Haha. So far as press manipulation goes, this is pretty classy. Clearly, they reckon the game is a good one, else they wouldn't be taking the risk of sending a copy to a reputable journalist like our man Crecente...
Guess whoever sents it is hoping that the (likely) positive press that will result from this (and has a bit, already) will cause Activision to think twice. Clever!

At the end of the day all these companies just see money and profit and it's not hard to believe that the Vivendi paid them could be more than the profit that the game will make and carries none of the risk associated in developing a current gen game. Seems like a good business decision to me.

Meanwhile, Crecente & Co. get to go to E3, get preview codes of my childhood... I mean, a very cool looking game, and get the inside dirt on all the latest video game news.
Seriously, where's the justice. At least go up to a crazy homeless man and get peed on once, just to make me feel better.
I guess I should also mention that I'm an EMT, for those not in the know. All the mention of bodily fluids all over my person without some sort of context might lead you guys to believe that I am some sort of REALLY weird fetishist.
