Godfather II Is As Much RTS As It Is GTA
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on August 7, 2008
Godfather was...OK. Not awful, but then, didn't really live up to the name, either. So it's thoroughly unsurprising to hear that, for the second game, they're ditching the GTA-style gameplay in favour of something a little more...unique. The latest issue of the UK's Xbox World 360 mag says the game's a little more like "Scarface meets Total War". Confused? Explanation follows: while the action/GTA bits remain, they're only part of the action. There's also a "Don's View" element to the game, much like the world map for the Total War games, where you can inspect and tweak stuff on a more strategic level (this time across three cities: Miami, Havana & New York). Could get messy, but then, anyone who's played X-Com may also find something to look forward to if EA can successfully manage the split between the planning and action sections.
We'll be checking out the game first-hand next week, so stay tuned for our impressions.

WHAT!
If your the Godfather you don't push units around a board wondering whether you have a enough action points to shoot or not. You get coked up go for a racketeering stroll, check out your Sicilian mistress and finish off with a pasta shoot out.
Spontaneity is all but lost.

Gosh I hope they don't screw up, and what's that about the game taking place ine the 1960s?! ffs the Godfather was famous for it's unique 1930s atmosphere which made a good point about how people were screwed after a period of recession and war and turned to crime to get sustainance now the 1960s? are we going to be dealing coke again?

Nothing will ever surpass X-Com interface. It's some sort of unwritten secret gaming law. Developers dare not cross it, so they must purposly sabotage their own efforts in order not to surpass X-Com.

I think it sounds interesting. And it sounds as if EA is perhaps living up to that "No more crappy licenses" promise they made.

This is bad news :( The first Godfather game was excellent, so what if it was a GTA clone? It was FUN!

Tbh I think it has at least some potential. I just don`t think this game should be 50/50 action/rts.

My girlfriend loved the first game because of the fact that it was like GTA. I was looking forward to this one so I could have another excuse to game with her, but it sounds like it will be way to complicated for her to enjoy. She is not a fan of RTS games, too many units, too much thinking, too many complicated control schemes. Meh, we'll probably pass on this one.

Wii version of Godfather was AWESOME.
Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Unless I say it.

Wow that sounds like crap. I'm serious. Totally the wrong direction for a Godfather game sequel.
They should copy what MAFIA did and MAFIA 2 is promising, simply put. Everything else will fail again.

Not many people who like sandboxy type will like RTS and vice versa. They of all people should know this. Just imagine you are having an intense gang war GTA style and suddenly a map pops up where you need to move around little dots/men. That would totally hamper the momentum.

I'm not a fan of playing RTS games. At all. I'll pass on this one. I want to shoot people, not control others to shoot people.

Also, I'm really excited for this, loved the first game! I also dig Total War so I'm not too scared by the concept.

@Ragarnok:
My guess is that they're going after the story in Godfather part II, which took place partially in the 60s (I think, coulda been the 50s; Godfather part I was late 40s at the latest, 1945 at the earliest (Michael was in WWII, after all)). Then, by extrapolation, Godfather part II's old-timey scenes took place between 1900s and 1920s, considering the methods of entertainment, technology, Vito's son's ages, etc.

It sounds ... convoluted, like they can't pick the kind of game they want it to be, so they will just take elements from every kind of game it could be and put them all together into some sort of Frankenstein-like super game. Or maybe it is that they are being ambitious and innovative. I'm not sure at this point.
My only worry is that when games start to complicate themselves like this, they may get too ambitious and either not execute each element very well, or they sabotage themselves and never come out due to development delays based on their complexity.

@Ragarnok: The 30s??? The first Godfather (book and movie) takes place between 1945 and 1955. Godfather II skips around in time, but the main story takes place a couple of years after the events of the first film, i.e. roughly 1960.

Dear God,
please cancel this game and let them never work on these kinds of thing again. Let them be for what they are. And not tarnish the image.

My problem is that strategy in the mafia is not just getting a bunch of guys and putting them in various spots in New York. Going by the books, it involves a lot of relationships that are used to get the enemies close and then stab them in the back.

The Godfather game was much better than critics made it out to be. It wasn't the best game, but it was pretty awesome to intimidate other businesses and just do things that you would do in GTA in the 40s.
It would be better for them to perfect that model than to scrap that and go for something entirely different. It sounds too much like the older Rainbow Six games were, and that does NOT seem like a good move for a crime game.

Also, I wanted to add that I think this sounds like a novel and innovative approach to the game.
I'm sort of surprised that most of the comments seem to be knocking the idea; everyone complains and grouses that there's no innovation in games anymore. Then, when EA (of all people!) tries to do something different, people are pissed that it's not going to be another GTA clone??? I'm beginning to think that most "hardcore" gamers are really just a bunch of whiners looking for excuses to get pissy about things.

I thought Godfather made a lot better sandbox game than saints row did. except when you became "Don of NYC" there were no more missions, no more enemies, no more clothing options...I was heartbroken, at least I had a big chair to sit in...

What's up with all the hate lately. You see one little sneak peek at a game and already condemn it to hell. +1 for everyone willing to give this a chance.
As for me, it looks more like they will try to retain the feel of the first game, added with some rts elements. I can see this work out if it is balanced. I liked the first one, chances are that I'll like this one.

I think it sounds like a good idea. Manage the crime empire, take over territory, and increase gang income, all before you jack a car and extort money from a tight-fisted baker.
Seems fun to me.

I really hope there's a Blackhand Edition for this one too. Wii Godfather had the best controls of any game ever. I actually can't wait for this one; Godfather was probably my favourite game of 2005.

This type of movie can only really be done as an adventure game, or something like that. Farenheit (Indigo Prophecy) would be a good match. Or maybe a strategy game like DEFCON or UPINK. Even a roleplay game could work.
Instead, developers always try to emphasise the action. The Godfather is not an action movie, so why turn it into an action game?

This if the first I've heard of it and I'm more than a bit excited. The first one was excellent, it's use of the wiimote and nunchuck were especially good I thought.
I doubt it will be anything like an RTS, I think it was just a poor choice of words on the magazine's part.

Weak.
The only saving grace for the Godfather will be word of mouth. And when you drop only a few "ideas" and a reinvention, you might want to include common sense.
