Golden Axe: Beast Rider Impressions Of Excessive Brown
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:20 AM on August 24, 2008
Don't mix beer and wine. Ever. And don't dabble in Golden Axe: Beast Rider when suffering from intercontinental jet lag. Let my folly become your wisdom. See, the Secret Level-developed update to the Golden Axe franchise is probably more... let's say... relaxing than it should be. That's a nice way of saying rather bland, as the rainbow of browns that permeate the game may lull hack 'n' slash fans into a restful slumber.
I mean, even the purple chicken things are brown.
That's not to say Golden Axe: Beast Rider is a bad game, from our hands on time with it. Just a bit uninspired, lacking in some tangible oomph, in the graphics department and the swordplay.
Beast Rider star Tyris Flare looks fantastic though. Whomever is responsible for her model and those perfectly modeled lower back dimples deserves a raise. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game does have its moments, visually. Hopping on a ridable beast that can camouflage itself with a Predator like effect looks pretty snazzy too.
The hand-to-hand action though, feels like a sludgier take on Heavenly Sword's combat system. Prior to attacks, Death Adder's minions will glow blue or orange, indicating whether you should parry or evade. If they glow green, it's ladies' choice. Respond accordingly and your next attack will be of the flaming sword variety.
Golden Axe: Beast Rider definitely gets some things right. The inclusion of throwback elements like the green and blue gnomes that drop refreshing meat ad magic potions return, as do the multi-tiered magic spells.
But many of the series' main draws — bright environments, co-op multiplayer and dazzling, increasingly ridiculous spells, metal bikinis — have been overlooked. And Flare's magic abilities just ooze boring. Where are the giant, fire puking dragon heads, guys? It's a game that appears to be full of good intentions — middling, road to Hell paving stuff.
We're not quite writing it off yet. Golden Axe: Beast Rider may have been only a semi-enjoyable slog, but we can see ourselves playing through a good portion of it, if only wanting for a thrill. Who knows if we'll leave the experience disappointed, because the game showed at least promise, even if it was a bit bland around the edges.

The "brown" thing isn't a big deal, if the rest of the game makes use of more shades in the end. Like Bluish for Ice levels, and Red for molten lava levels.
Golden Axe was always kinda... brown, though. The style of the old games was much less colorful than most games of their days, and they always tried to maintain a dirty, fantasy-novel art style to their sprites and world.
If Tyris and Axe Battler and Gillius Thunderhead where all cartoony colored, they'd look like Thunderhead did in Sega Superstar Tennis. Which I remember hearing most people thinking Gil looked like a Clay Fighters-esque,cartoony model. (I didn't think he looked bad at all; I did think Alexkid looked creepy, though.)
I hope the success of Bionic Commando Rearmed leads other industry giants, with expansive catalogs, such as Sega and Konami, towards making modern day, quality remakes/sequels of older games, with inexpensive prices. I expect we'd see more color, and more attempts at "experimental" art styles, in products such as that, rather than these expensive, fully-next-gen money-sinks.

@RonJeremy4Pres: And why is it assumed that when one says that a game is too "brown" that they are suggesting it has to be rainbow-y colored? As I said in my previous post, a little bit of contrast here and there would be nice.

I didn't hear anyone raving about Kameo's (I loved Kameo) colours... I don't get the complaints of too much "brown."
It looks pretty fun from what I've seen, I don't think I'd by it, especially considering the ridiculous amount of AAA titles coming out.

I don't give a rat's ass if its really brown! I think the screenshot looks good. Why is it assumed that every game has to be as rainbow-y colorful as one of those San Francisco pride marches?

Meh, I don't really mind the brown because it's Golden Axe and remember long stretches of brown scenery with purple and pinkish looking creatures. I can't wait for the game to come out.
I can't wait to beatdown some gnomes for grub. ^_^

@LordPotato, PENI_MASTA: Why can't their be a middle of the road? Why can't their be some brown environments and others that vary in color? Or an environment where there is a lot of brown but also a good deal of color to contrast it? It doesn't have to be either 600 shades of brown or a magical rainbow land.

@LordPotato: Exactly. That is what the complaint is. Almost every game does the brown thing, if almost every game did the color thing people would be complaining about that. The problem is that they all do the same thing, not specifically that people hate brown.

Yes. A brown current gen game. Getting a little sick of hearing this complaint, honestly. What if it were the other way around and every game was a saturated cornucopia of color? We'd probably start complaining about that. And a brown game would get praise for its "grittiness" and "realism".

Regardless of how good MGS4 was, it's funny that the "rainbow of browns" in the game never brought it down. I'm not defending the game, but it is an interesting question why do some games get a free pass while others do not.

I was really hoping they get this right though to be honest I don't think Sega prioritizes this as some of their other franchises.
@McWhertor:
Any idea if they made the game co-op? Offline or Online is ok . Seems weird that they went to the trouble of developing a Golden Axe game and them making it single-player only is a bit idiotic. I expect this game to be playable no matter how bland it is if there's coop involved.

@jynxce: Well, considering the first chapter took place in the Middle East, I'd imagine a lot of brown colors. I'd be shocked if the first level of MGS4 was in the Middle East and looked like a rainforest of color. The South American level had plenty of green in it, which isn't brown..lol.

Brown is just the buzz these days. Some time ago during the development of one game, I was told by alpha-testers "Just don't make a jungle level. That's been beaten to death".
@jynxce: It's only the first chapter of MGS4 that was brown - for the reason JoRo1986 described. After it, greeny nature, dark midnight streets and silver-blue metal-constructs were the themes. Man, the metallic environment and storm-colored sea+sky during the mech combat were gorgeous.
I played Golden Axe (iirc) just for the 4-player co-op thing on arcades. Overlooking multiplayer is a big mistake.

Sega once again I must state please remove head from ass and put out Phanstay Star V. Look at Namco, they put out 10 Jrpgs a year and make hand over fist money. Is it really that hard to figure out? I thought the first death of Sega when Sammy bought them was hard enough to deal with. They might as well just retire the name if this is their new "big" game.

McWhertor, did you dig the console Conan game? Just curious as to how it stacks up to Beast Rider 'cause it had that simple arcadey gameplay with lots of awesome dismemberment (and an achievement for lopping off someone's head with a shield).

I'm pretty damn tired of the brown and gray thing. Honestly, how many damn games are going to continue to use this limited color scheme. It's over done now. I agree that if EVERY game was over-saturated, it would be too much as well, but I'm getting bored by these uninspired colors. These are still video games...and colors are attractive.

I think some new gamers need to figure out there was a point in time when console power was connected to how many colors a system could display at once ( old school pissing contest ). So some of the gripes about brown grey games on current systems that can drop off millions of colors can be a legit issue. Now when you add in a classic game like Golden Axe thats was kick ass co-op hack, that had awesome spells that would fill up the entire screen, that had different PCs with different spells ect ect ect hahaha the game looking like a brown turd is just insult on injury.
Side note, as for being in a desert...ever hear of Painted Vally :P

No co-op, spell system looks scrubed down, only one PC, combat looks rather dry, vomit taste in the mouth for retro classic gamers. Its not just lack of color from a single screenshot that has some people up in arms. Plus with the fantastic backdrops Star Wars Force Unleashed looks to have there is really no excuse for the laughable enviroments of Golden Axe.

The lack of coop is a serious oversight, the colors, who cares. Everyone loved Gears of War and that was the greyest most bland colored game ever, but because the texture work and animations were great, nobody cared. For me, who spent hours in the Arcades and on the Genesis with my buddies playing through Golden Axe, the coop WAS the draw for the game, because otherwise the combat was never that fantastic to begin with. Golden Axe was one of the first coop games I ever played, certainly the first 3 player coop, and when I think of the franchise, I think coop. It would be like releasing a new Gauntlet game without coop. Whats the point of playing some bland, boring game by yourself?
