Konami Pulls In $US 655 Million In Q1 With A Little Help From Snake
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on August 6, 2008
Publisher and developer Konami announced today that it raked in about 70.8 billion yen for the quarter ending in June, which translates to some $US 655 million in U.S. dollars. That was up from the same quarter last year by about 17%, no doubt in part to the return of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4.
As we reported earlier, Konami revealed it had shipped out close to 4 million copies of the game, accounting for a massive chunk of its game revenue. Konami's total "digital entertainment" business did a cool 44.9 billion yen alone, with its "health and fitness" business ventures doing about 22 billion yen.
Konami is expecting to pull in an estimated $US 3.1 billion for the year.
Consolidated Results for the First Quarter ended June 30, 2008 [Konami]

@XeroKool:
I've played and beaten the game. It doesn't change the fact that games like Assassins Creed have a far better Third Person camera and that having to stay still whiile firing in first-person mode is outdated. You have to press too many buttons to do too little. Don't get me started on shooting behind cover and the lack of collision detection.

A Dual Layer Blu-Ray is 50 Gigs. A Dual layer DVD is 9 Gigs, -the rumored 2 gigs of Microsoft metadata is 7 usable Gigs. Which is 8 Xbox discs per one dual layer Blu-ray.

@Antialias: Not to mention MGS4 installs 20GB* of data. But since we have an installation every act, that 40GB is divided into 5 since the PS3 can only save data up to 4-5GB at a time.

@mlubczyk: "Game A has better controls and camera than Game B, therefore Game B is inferior as a whole and vastly overrated." I'm sorry, what? That is the worst reasoning ever. I couldn't get a quarter of the way through Assassins Creed when I rented, I got so bored with it. Yet MGS4 is still sitting in my PS3.
A game can have flaws and still be an excellent game. I can honestly say MGS4 was one of the most quality and fun games I've played in quite some time, while acknowledging it's various flaws same time. What MGS4 did right for me completely outweighed and overshadowed what it did wrong.

THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY BY SELLING TO RETAILERS. THEY DO NOT MAKE MONEY FROM YOU BUYING THEIR GAME(Well, you could argue that they do, as retailers won't buy games that don't sell, but still, it's 4 million sold).
Also, no it would not have had double the sales. The reason exclusives usually sell a lot of copies on a single platform is because they are well, exclusive. If Halo was not exclusive to 360, it would have failed and drowned in the endless ocean of spaceshooters.

@mlubczyk: Assassin's Creed had a great third person camera. But your comment about MGS4 pressing "...too many buttons to do too little..." is invalid, unless you're appealing to the fact that practically every third-person shooter of this generation applies. And that's including Assassin's Creed.
Also, your comment about "...having to stay still whiile firing in first-person mode..." being oudated is irrelevant and you're mistaken, since you can move while in first-person mode.
Though I'm actually interested with the last thing you mentioned - where was the collision detection problem in the game?

@xCruciaLx:
Exactly. Clearly the game isn't able to run off the disc, the loadtimes for the huge textures would be hugely prohibitive to gameplay.
Added to that, I didn't factor into my analysis the repetition of data that would be required for multiple discs (like you need snake's texture, various voice tracks and so on in all the discs). That might actually make it impossible to split up into multiple discs without a mandatory install, as it's a good bet that the repetition data would be larger than 7 gigs...
I guess when Kojima said this was only possible on PS3 he wasn't lying. Of course we didn't believe him at the time because he was talking at a Sony event (was it E3 '07?). We Should learn to listen to our auteurs.

You can't move well. It's not a good Shooter game or Stealth well. Metal Gear Solid has always been a series that can't make up it's mind - be a shooter or a stealth game. It's not good at bother. Games have evolved much over what MGS4 offers.
You're like the mindless GTA4 and Mario fanboys that adore games instead of being critical of them. You know why MGS4 is so archaic, because Kojima and Konami knew its legions of fanboys would buy the game anyway. Same for GTA4 and Brawl.

@Communist_Gamer: dvd9 is just over 8.5gigs minus the 2gigs microsoft requires for an xbox game per disk makes it 6.5gigs of real available disk space. Kojima himself said the bd50 was not enough space so let's do some math 50/6.5 that's 7.69 disks which equates to 8 dvd9 disks. Considering manufacturing costs it would cost a shit load of money per copy just to get the same quality as the PS3.
@CockneyKaiser: all cut scenes in the game are ran using the in game engine using the in game textures, the transitions are real time, once the level loads there are no more load screens until the next level.
@xCruciaLx: the install can be larger but this is done to minimize the install times, for such a huge amount of data after the initial install, it sure does install fast.

@failzmcgee: Halo is also on the pc. It was successful because a lot of hype and marketing dollars spend on it (100 Mil?). Compare that with COD4...it look rather archaic for a shooter, but with large community support, even old games hard to die. OTH, people with guns always sell well...

@failzmcgee: What happens when the retailer can't move 50,000 copies of FailMcgee's "random crappy video game"? Well they do a retailer return, foot the bill for shipping but get their money back. So while they don't immediately profit from each sale, they do profit.
A exclusive game doesn't move units. Look at heavenly sword or lair. What moves units is consumer demand. You induce it with hype, a good game, or T&A. Halo 3 sold on hype. MGS4 and GOW sold on hype and quality. Dead or Alive : Xtreme volleyball sold on T & A.

@Communist_Gamer: A 360 MGS$, The sound/sound mix will be worse. Thats unavoidable with space limitations. The majority of the decision to go with uncompressed sound was to allow low CPU sound mixing of HD audio streams. The graphics may or may not be worse depending on if MS allows an install for MGS4. Textures can be losslessly compressed and come off the 3-8 disks it'll require. If they do 2 disks the texture quality will go down noticeably. If they go with 3 or more MS will eat their profits. The only way it's going to happen is a graphic compromised 2 disk MGS4 or else MS will make some special deal with konami and allow HD installs.

@DARTH_TIGRIS: It might have sold more but I believe Kojima when he said it only works for the PS3. If it came on to the 360, I doubt the quality would have been as good as now. I do not mind if Konami makes MGS4 multiplatform now due to the fact that the PS3 version is done and won't affect the quality on the PS3. Although I do wish Kojima was able in more six-axis control, so far the most interesting six-axis usage is making rosemary's breast shake.

The collision detection is painfully obvious in CQC when an alert has already been sounded. You can also roll through the bodies of your enemies.

It's so sad to see this "port it to 360" plea happening. The series has profited well on PS3. They ported MGS2 to the original XBox, and it didn't sell.
Now, you tell me: stick with the console that has more space on it's disc for extra bells and whistles you want to add, and a history of the game selling like hotcakes, or porting it over multiple discs just so the fanboys can stop whining?

According to Konami MGS4 shipped 3million on the day of its release. Fast forward to today and it has shipped 3.94 million (according to Konami). So demand has dropped off quite a bit.
Profits are up 17% for the quarter, but what was released Q1 in 2007? I honestly don't remember, but if nothing spectacular was released last year, these numbers seem quite lackluster
