Lego Batman Coming To iPhone?
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 9:20 AM on August 28, 2008
The latest installment in the LEGO Thing franchise — LEGO Batman — could be heading to the iPhone, reports Pocket Gamer.
There have been earlier Java midlet versions of LEGO games - notably Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, but it would be nice to think that theiPhone would get a proper conversion..
The possibilities for manipulating LEGO bricks using multi-touch gestures could make for an interesting twist on the LEGO gameplay. Even if it is just a port of the DS version, though, it should be worth checking out providing the thorny issue of lack of D-Pad is resolved.
Pocketgamer don't mention a source for the news — hence the rumour tag — but as soon as we get more details, you shall be the first to know.

Nope. I don't think so. Exactly like you said, the lack of a D-Pad is too big of an issue.

Considering how they probably want to launch this and future games in as many console/handhelds/etc as posible, they can always twist the gameplay and still call it LEGO Batman to get some money out of it.
So the question is not if they can release the game but whether or not will it still be fun and similar to the other versions.

@ivan225: Yes every game or app that comes out the App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch works with both. But anyways, it would definitely be interesting to see what they could do with an iPhone/iPod Touch version. I wonder if they could get the same graphics that they had on the PSP versions of the other Lego games.

I'd buy it if it was a straight up port. If its a different game by the same name, then probably not.

Controls: Holding the phone landscape:
Touch edge of the screen to move their, sort of diablo like
Double tap enemies to attack them,
Tap with 3 fingers to pick up items
Tap and hold with lego to build/ equivalent of digging in lego indy
Oh and drag your finger from middle of screen upwards to jump?
What did i miss?

I don't see them being able to port the full version (LEGO Indy takes 4GB of free HDD space, which is a _huge_ chunk to blow on an iPhone/iTouch game). The DS version could work, but you would need to accomodate all of the following controls:
D-pad
Left/Right shoulder buttons (used to rotate through the available PCs)
A button ("special", like Indy's whip)
B button (jump)
Y button (attack)
Start button (pause/menu)
@noelix:
A port of which version? With LEGO Indy, the DS game was almost unrelated to the console version, but since it was developed by TT Games instead of being farmed out like LSW2:DS, it was actually a quality game. Better in some ways, actually. I had no glitches when playing the DS version, but there are a couple of chests that I just can't snag in the stupid minecart level in the PC version, and one of them is just _sitting_ there, so all you should have to do is lean over and grab it.
@kevanio:
You don't need to pick up any items, since you automatically do so when you approach them, but you should have a means of attacking that doesn't require picking your target, and you have no controls listed for changing characters. The "build/dig" control you listed is the "special" command, which in the LIJ DS game is used to control the whip (both to attack and use Whip Points for crossing gaps and pulling levers), use the umbrella on a zip line, throw a sword/spear, change into a monkey, access Scholar/Templar panels and Thuggee statues, climb into Short doors, dig, and build. The LSW:CS game has a much smaller list of Special functions, but it includes using Force powers.

Gaming on the iPhone certainly isn't perfect, and it could use a lot of improvement. But it's still a very young platform, and I think it's done exceptionally well so far. I love gaming on it personally, just because it's a nice way to spend time in lines, on buses/trains, etc. It certainly is innovative. Like others, I'm hoping that controls improve somehow, but I think too many are condeming this amazing gaming platform too quickly, while it's still in it's infancy.

I hope that the market and Apple really embrace the button add-on that is coming out on iPhone and iTouch soon. It would certainly be a gaming boon and allow for all sorts of games not possible currently.
I feel like the iPhone is similar to the Wii and DS, in that people take advantage of the new touch or wave or whatever control system, and totally forget about buttons. Many games simply cannot be done well without buttons. I don't think the iPhone needs buttons otherwise though, so an add-on sounds great. But only if it catches on and works with the App Store and Apple doesn't try to kill it.
In fact, PLEASE APPLE! Authorize the game button product as a Made for iPhone product and sell it in the Apple Store. Or at least make your own or something. It will drive iPhone/iTouch sales if you do this because game makers will flock to the iPhone and people will start buying it as a gaming device.
But you need to have a product like this. Or you could make an iPhone Gamer, but I think that wouldn't sell that well really since most people already have an iPhone and don't want to buy another simply because it has a couple buttons.
