Look, A...Stella Artois PSP
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on August 25, 2008
Don't see how the two go together, really, but hey, I'm not an advertising guru. Fosters - who here in Australia brew Stella Artois under licence - have decided to form a sales team specifically geared at shifting more Stella. Which in a country where local beer is the breakfast of champions is a tough sell. So they figured they'd think outside the box, and give all fifty members of the team a limited edition Stella Artois PSP. It's got a Stella graphic on the back, came in a Stella pouch and has a Stella XMB theme. Looks nice! Won the acclaim of advertisers! Pity, then, that all it's going to do is make punters think the PSP tastes like diet cats piss as well.
PSPs replace paper for brand storytelling [Lowe + Rivet, thanks Chrisso!]

Okay guys,
I'm going to set some things straight.
1/ Stella Artois is one of my least favourite beers in Belgium (I prefer Jupiler for my pils)
2/ That being said it still beats anything brewed outside Belgium. Americans, Australians, Germans, the Dutch, none of them know how to do it. Belgium is the only country in the world with a true beer culture. We have the expertise and if you are a regular beer taster (note not drinker), you have to acknowledge that.
3/ This year a Belgian Beer is once again voted Best beer in the world. After several victories by the very elitist Westvleteren 12°, it is now the sexy blond trippel Karmeliet that was granted this prestigious title.
In conclusion,
you don't know beer if you don't know Belgian beer.
(Inbef, can I get my three kegs of jupiler now?)

@jamesbong00spliff: I personally quite like my stella, but then I live in leuven, which if any of you check the label is where stella artois comes from.
So maybe it's some sort of defend my own reflex, or it tastes better direct from the original brewery (where, if you go for a tour, you can drink as many pints as you can for free afterwards).

@the daniel: @animation-imp: You both make good p(o)ints. There is a true Belgian beer culture, and believe me, they brew some of the best beers in the world. That being said, there are terrific beers brewed in almost every country. I'm Canadian, and the best pint I've ever had (generally speaking, forget lagers and ales and so on) was from some tiny brew pub in Alberta, I can't even remember the name of it! And yeah, Juliper is a good pick if you can get it. In North America, Stella is better than some of the more readily available beers, but is over marketed and isn't good enough to warrant such an ad campaign. I would take Sleemans over Stella any day. Even Heineken and Becks!

animation-imp - that is astonishing bullshit. Some of the best beers in the world are brewed in the United States. I concede the many of the best beers are from Belgium, but to think that a country founded by Europeans that is 30 times the size of Belgium doesn't have a 'true beer culture' somewhere hidden away (even if it's not on a national scale) is pretty astounding. Three Floyds, Bells, Hair of the Dog, or my college-town fave, Founders all put out beers that match anything out of Belgium.
I know Belgian beer, I know beer. My favorite mass-produced beers (read: available in most restaurants) are Belgian. However, if you assert that the Americans don't know how to do beer, I can only pity you as you may pass from this earth without experiencing some fine, fine drinks (hint: we tend to do stouts and the like much better than we do lagers and pils).

Even if you can say your crap tastes the best, it still tastes like crap. Yes, I hate beer. No, I don't think tasting a "fancy" beer is going to change my mind. Yes, I realize that many beer drinking mullet wearers are going to froth at the mouth over this. No, I still don't care. :P

@GlibGamer:
Well I wont argue over taste,
if you don't like beer in general it's fine by me.
But you have to realize that beer is as much an acquired taste as whiskey, Brandy or any other high culture alcoholic beverage.
In Belgium we have aproximately 400 different kinds of beer.
Each have a distinct taste that links it to it's town of orrigin.
Stella certainly aint the best beer around, but it's quite decent as a drinking beer, it sure beats stuff like heineken and carlsberg for sure.
I like good beverages and good food,
A nice well brewn Belgian beer beats almost anything, even fine wine at the dinner table.
Those of you who claim American and Irish breweries beat Belgian beer producers (or Jenever is also very interesting, but let us stay with beer for a while) really don't know what they're talking about.
I would love to have the possibility to show you guys, as I have done with several visitors who I met during my studies in Ghent. When they enter a normal bar in Belgium they're already overwhelmed by the choices they can make, but when I take them to a bar specialised in regionnal beers it literally blows their mind.

Well, I've lived in Ireland and the US and had dozens of different Belgian beers, and nothing touches American microbrews. The vast majority of Belgian beers are cloyingly sweet and wheat-y Dubel and Tripels and there's a glut of mediocre lagers. The handful of good lambics are obscured by the saccharine tide of bad ones.
Irish beer is, barring a handful of decent others, pretty much just Guinness - they have a total stranglehold over the beer industry here. I like Guinness, but there's not a lot else.
Really, in most areas, American microbrews dominate global competitions - APAs (obviously) and IPAs, but you've also got incredible Imperial Stouts. Certainly there are great Belgian beers, but they simply cannot touch the US micros.
Also, Stella is horrible.

I'm trapped in a small town in Missourri and these backwoods punters don't even carry Stella on draft out here. Everybody seems to be into these godawful regional wheat beers that seem to require a lemon or orange wedge in order to be palatable.
If you need to add produce to your beer then it definitely earns negative points.

What, nobody wondering where the Coors Light branded PSP is? (Exclusively for Kotaku readers! Limited edition, only 50,000 available.)
They probably picked Stella because it's a recognised brand amongst the 20-something set; for younger, supposedly better-informed drinkers who are too "upmarket" for Foster's, XXXX or VB yet who aren't classy enough for a decent brew. (Speaking of which, I wish I had some Hoegaarden or Leffe in the fridge right about now. Or maybe some Pilsener Urquell. Or anything else that's good, I've got to read this thread again for suggestions.)
