Max Payne Movie Is Wahlberg's 'Bourne'?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on August 6, 2008
That's what the cover of the latest issue of British mag Total Film is asking. We'd respond with "hopefully not", what with Jason Bourne being nothing like Max Payne, but whatever. On the bright side, the mag's feature article on the movie has a bit of new info, including the fact that, apparently, Payne is Wahlberg's all-time "favourite role", and that he'll be bringing a little more depth to the character than the game ever afforded:
Sure, I raise my voice, get in people's faces... But I ramp up the humour, too. He's like a version of my character in The Departed - sly and cynical but also very funny. That's the kind of thing people like to see me doing.
We also like seeing him dance around in his undies and/or singing Transformers songs, but hopefully they won't also be in the movie. They're not really canon.

@Detre: Hmmm, not a "great" actor, but a "smart" one? God knows we need more smart actors/actresses in Hollywood.

Nothing says humor like watching your wife and infant daughter getting shot to death before your very eyes. If Wahlberg winds up being the sole reason this movie fails, then I'm going to destroy him.

He's got the face pretty well-on. This may be one of the few game-to-movie goodies. Although, now that I've written that, I can't think of another one. Help?

I hate Mark Wahlberg so much. I almost wish I knew why, but for now, my blind hatred is satisfactory.
I do, however, love the Bourne movies, so if Max Payne ends up anywhere near as good, I'll squint and pretend it's Matt Damon.

@BoringJob: I dont know anyone who says hes a great actor, but he has been in alot of great movies. Id say hes a fairly decent actor who usually picks his roles really well. Cant really think of any of the movies hes ever done that i just absolutely hate. Hard to say that about most actors.

I think he's good. I think he's perfect for the role. If this sucks, then it's a good possibility video game movies just aren't meant to be... yet.

Wait. I haven't seen a Bourne movie but aren't they supposed to be pretty good flicks? How can this be Wahlberg's Bourne when this movie is gonna suck?

@Crosswayboy: I knew somebody would mention his supposed Holy grail. Watch it again. He's awful. He sounds bored to have to stand around and act in a movie about him having a giant schwance.
The only reason to watch Boogie Nights is to see heather graham's (another horrid actor/actress who gets by on looks) tits and bush.
I was disappointed by Julianne Moore though. She seemed to have no curves at all.

I love the end of the departed. I died laughing when wahlberg is just standing there with the gun. Especially because damon's character thought he was going to get away scott free. One of those cool moments.

@BoringJob: True- he does get to work with better scripts than he deserves to, and any actor would die to be in his position... but dude, he's got charisma, and that counts for SOMETHING.
Go back and watch Boogie Nights again. Simply badass.

Any definition of 'canon' that doesn't include references to Transformers songs and underwear dancing is less definition and more a goddamned lie.

The fact that they called Chris O'Donnell "rubish Robin" made that article a win for me. I am glad Wahlberg shows enthusiasm for the role. It gives me hope that the movie may be good, unlike some interviews where you can clearly tell the actor knows their just phoning in a paycheck.

I'm tired of people acting like Marky Mark is a great actor or something. He uses the same dead delivery every time. He's horrid. I can't think of one movie where I was impressed by his acting.
His brother, meanwhile, is a FUCKING GREAT ACTOR and criminally underrated.

More funny? I thought Dignet was freaking hilarious in The Departed. JUST the right amount of humor to what have been another boring "hard-ass" character.

Wahlberg+Humor+Action=The Big Hit While I wouldn't mind another "Big Hit" movie, I really don't think it will go over well if his version of Max Payne reminds people of Melvin Smiley.

@BoringJob: I wouldn't say he's a "great" actor as much as he is an action star who can hold his own in dramatic moments. Not mind blowing stuff, but he gets the job done and manages to maintain a nice energetic presence.
That or I'm just way too easy to please. Probably the latter.

I dunno, Wahlberg gave a pretty good run as Bob Lee Swagger in Shooter...just without...well the whole being Southern part. But the man's cool as ice, and so is Mr. Payne, so I'm saying, as others have..."looks promising."

Name dropping your own role from departed, marky mark? Pretty weak. As much as i love anything scorsese including his american express commercials i prefer infernal affairs to departed anyways. But thats for another blog.
@BoringJob: I totally agree, donny wahlberg is a fabulous actor and is woefully underrated.

Um, Shooter is Mark Wahlberg's "Bourne." Have any of you seen it? He's basically Bourne with a southern accent and a little less compassion. A bit less likeable if you ask me, but still just as badass.

@AcidCrownie: That's a face he uses in nearly every movie he's in. He's one of the few actors who's managed to be considered overrated and underrated at the same time. Shooter was just a fun watch while Invincible turned out better than I thought it'd be. Invincible was one of my blu ray promotion picks.
On a side note, they ran out of Babel discs and sent me Happy Feet instead. Happy Feet is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

@EmTeeZ:
Yeah, because "well, my new movie 'The Happening' is in theatres this week, and, you know, it's probably not the best movie I've made, it's actually kind of bad, the story doesn't make any sense, I don't know what Night was thinking, really...BUT CHECK IT OUT ANYWAY! *thumbs up*" would certainly have gotten more people out to see it. It's called "promoting" a movie for a reason.
That said, I don't know what to make of this film just yet, I'll reserve judgment for when I see it in action. I partially respect Mark Wahlberg for some of his roles, and I'm hoping this will be one of them.

I don't know why people are complaining about Mark Wahlberg while trumpeting Matt Damon.
Matt Damon, was a Good actor, now he does the same damn thing that Brad Pitt and George clooney do. Basically they take a script that fits the supposed "cool Guy" personality. Then instead of Acting they basically show off what Matt Damon, George Clooney and Brad Pitt would be in that area. Watch any of their last movies their mannerisms and expressions are the same from movie to movie.
They are always to cool to be surprised, they all do the same squinting eye expression of anger. Brad Pitt being the worse of them I don't think he has acted in anything since fight club. Oh he was in movies he just wasn't acting, nothing but that same bewildered retard look he gives in all his movies, or his "look I am to cool to make an expression" face. When he does actually try and act you are left disappointed. Damon, and Clooney know better but they also know they don't have to try any more. So lets lean up off of Mark Wahlberg, because really hollywood is quite devoid of any real big named talent right now.

@zsavior: Oh, I dunno. Clooney was pretty awesome in Syriana. Pitt wasn't too bad in Babel either. They're more movie stars than actors, but they aren't too terrible. Marky Mark was awesome in Three Kings and The Departed. He'll be alright.
