More MK vs DC Impressions, Any Left Over Crow?
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 7:20 AM on August 8, 2008
I know I wasn't the only person shaking my head in disbelief after seeing the initial teaser trailer for Mortal Kombat vs. D.C. Universe a few months back. "What are they doing to this franchise? This must be a joke!" I said to myself. So I was surprised - and relieved - after all the positive impressions the game received coming out of E3. But how does it play? Midway dropped by to show off their upcoming titles this morning, and I got a chance to get a couple matches in.
It appears as if Midway is going back to the basics with MK vs. DC. No more stage fatalities, run buttons, weapons, and no babalities or friendships either. Nothing crazy we've seen from the past couple MK games, anyway.
The build I played was from this past Comic-Con, so while Joker and Green Lantern were announced recently, they still weren't playable. And still, the only available fatalities were Scorpion's flame engulf, and Superman's brutality pound. Catwoman and Shang Tsung were playable, though, so I picked Catwoman just for the hell of it.
The game plays just as you'd expect a Mortal Kombat game to play. While it's considered a straight 2D fighter, there is the option to sidestep using the left analogue stick. It's not used for dodging attacks, so other than moving around the map, I'm not sure why it was added, other than maybe to please the Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter fans.
Something I noticed about the combat is the uppercuts don't have any meat behind them. Before, when you'd uppercut someone, the screen would shake and it'd feel damn good. In MK vs. DC, there didn't seem to be any punch behind them. You opponent sort of just flies in the air. But besides that, I didn't have a problem executing moves, even on the 360 d-pad.
Also, despite the game being as far along as it is, they still are tweaking the character moves list, even from those they've already revealed. You remember Sub-Zero's ground freeze move from MK2? The Midway rep said they might be adding that one back in. As for fatalities (and brutalities for the DC heroes), each character will have at least two. Hopefully they're more brutal than what we've seen so far.
I came away most impressed with the character body damage. Not only does it look cool, but it's specific to points of contact as well. For example, if I grab Batman's arm and give him an elbow-breaker, his suit will rip above and below the arm. Likewise, if I punch Scorpion in the face, his mask will come off. So the body damage isn't tied to overall health or anything like I had originally thought.
As far as trophies and achievements go, they haven't even started working on them. The Midway rep said they're going to try and get creative, though. I'd expect to see some of the usual "win 50+ matches in a row" kind of deal.
Overall, this is probably the most excited I've been for a new MK game since MK4, which came out a long, long time ago. I hope McMike saved some crow for me!

@ajiezer:
The thing is, the MK dudes have never been just regular people. I mean Scorpion is from hell, and I'm sure dudes from hell are pretty tough. Sub-Zero is an ICE NINJA. Liu Kang (unconfirmed to be playable...probably will) can morph into A DRAGON and is a zombie. So they probably can rough Superman up a bit.

@Thorax:
Sorry, but the 360 d-pad IS bad. This isn't overblown, otherwise you wouldn't see gamers/bloggers/reviewers bringing it up so often, especially when the pad is the sole means to play a game. Playing any game that requires precision (like, say, SC4) is a pain, as 10-20% of the time, a cardinal direction input comes out as something in between. It's quite annoying when a f+B comes out as a df+B.
Like what Datheron said, it feels "mushy." If I'm just holding L on the d-pad but I shift pressure ever-so-slightly up or down a little bit, I can actually feel when it does its slight shift to DL or UL no-man's-land, even though I'm only holding L. Tt doesn't conform to how the d-pad is set up. The margin of error is pretty big.

@okenny :( ... not sure what to believe in anymore: I jumped on no such bandwagon. I hate the 360's d-pad because of personal experience with it and came to the conclusion that it blows. I think my Hori DOA4 arcade stick was the best purchase I made for the 360 and it's nice to see that they brought out a SC4 version as well.

@okenny :( ... not sure what to believe in anymore: I actually think the d-pad problem exists on some 360 controllers; I have three controllers, and I refuse to play Lumines Live (I use the d-pad for more accuracy) or NBA 2k8 (for calling plays) on all except my one "good" controller. The thing just feels mushy on the others, and doesn't give you the tactile feedback to let you know whether the direction pressed was registered or not.

I'm not sure how I feel about MK characters doing fatalities on the DC characters, especially since DC characters only have brutalities.
I came up with a list of fatalities for some the DC characters. If anyone at Midway happens to read the comments on Kotaku, these are for you:
Wonderwoman: Uses invisible lasso to make enemies tell most embarrassing secrets, then uses it as a noose, finally gives the rope a yank and pops head off.
Superman: punches enemy into the sun, then flies around earth backwards to reverse time just so he can do it again.
The Flash: runs a circle around the enemy so fast their body twists up like a twizzler, which he then cuts into pieces and sells at movie theaters for $10 as "red vines"
Black Canary: Does something related to whatever the hell Black Canary does.

@okenny :( ... not sure what to believe in anymore: It might just be that some of the controllers are poorly built, but all of the controllers I've tried that came with each my 360s had terrible dpads. Not only are they mushy, but it detaches from whatever it presses to register the motions. I often find myself needing to roll the dpad in order to get it realigned after one of the directions detaches during sessions of dpad heavy gaming. On that note, I also find the PS3's triggers ergonomically challenged but at least they function properly.

@wanion: You are touching on a rather important aspect of the DC comic universe, in that half the characters are indestructible with powers that could destroy the earth without too much effort, and the other half are essentially humans with gadgets and super-advanced-but-still-human abilities, like Batman and Green Arrow.
Regardless of what Midway says (weakness to magic my ass), and how amazing MK vs DC ends up being, Superman fighting guys and not obliterating them will just seam stupid.

@liquidnumb: The crossover, in and of itself, is not a bad idea. What I don't like about it is that the only way the crossover can happen is that Midway has to tone down Mortal Kombat to get access to the DC characters.
Mortal Kombat is known for the gore factor. Sure, Boon has said there will be "fatalities" in it, but I don't buy that they will not be anywhere near as graphic as the norm of the franchise (no head ripping, no ripping someones leg off and then beating them to death with it, etc). Look at the videos. It used to be you simply punch someone and it was like you hit them with a weed-whacker. It was an Evil Dead level of over-the-top violence. Look at it now. Anyone else getting that MK1 SNES gray sweat vibe?
That is what I don't like about it. It's the video game equivalent of a studio taking an R rated movie franchise and putting out a PG-13 sequel.
I'd love to be proven wrong on this, but them only showing Scorpion's fire fatality (the same one that was unaltered in the SNES port) doesn't fill me with hope for the head chopping, heart ripping, arm tearing MK I love.

It still doesn't look like Midway understands how to make character models animate like they're not all obeying the exact same wireframe skeletons. Everyone throws a punch, kicks, jumps and dashes with almost the exact same motions. About the only 'unique' motions don't flow at all from previous poses (Sonya's bicycle kicks).
It might be fun in a nostalgic sense but honestly it still looks from the existing footage like it could have been 'Mortal Kombat vs. Anybody' with such bland animation design. If they're leaning on their Story Mode to immerse players into recognizing that Superman and Batman are more than just cosmetic swaps of each other then they're not going to win over any new hearts and minds.

So confused now. I want this game but there are so many ignorant people out there that laugh at the concept of this game.
Alright here we go.
1. What the hell is the MK univers filled with?
Answer: Magic, Supermans weakness. And every character uses some form of magic. In the MK universe, Earthrealm is a part of an entity called the One Being, obviously magical since the thing got split up and soon reunited (thanks to one dumbass <_<). Realms made of magic, Superman is practically in air made from magic.
2: This is Midways rendition of a MK game mixed with DC
characters so how can this be silly?
Answer: None. Its a freakin fighting game where you use magic or physical attacks to beat the crap out of your opponents. There are still fatalities, and the heroes get brutalities. DC doesn't want a negative image for their Superheroes.
3. I know we all who loved the game for its blood were alittle dissapointed, but honestly do you want to expose the stupid kids who ignore the ratings for the age group of this game, to blood, splattering bones, nightmarish death, and such?
Answer:....they're gonna buy it anyways :P
4: Why care about how graphic the fatalities are and how they are?
I already have a good example. Wouldn't burning someone to a husk kill them? Yes.
Wouldn't pounding someone from the head right into the ground kill someone? Yes. But the MK staff said they would still be alive because they don't want our heroes killing.
They are only fatalities and brutatlities in NAME. They still look like they are dead!!!
And one last question to anyone who can answer it....
Why do you think this game is silly? And none of that "this is a silly concept" crap or "this will be major fail cause....FREAKIN DC DUDEZ"
I want a good explanation. Midway has offered a perfactly good explanation as to why Superman can get hurt...MAGIC. AN AGE OLD AND EASILY CONFIRMED FACT!!!

The 360 D-Pad is the reason why I will NEVER, EVER, EVER buy it for the 360. Its just a complete of fail when it comes to input, especially slide techniques. I felt DualShock always provided a more tactile experince and I have no idea why the x360 didnt just do the same. Though I have to say on that note that i did hate the "Street Fighter Thumb" where an excess of puss would build up on the tip of my thumb which became a pain after many hours on SF Alpha 3.
