MTV Not Publishing Brutal Legend
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on August 13, 2008
Brutal Legend was one of the titles that didn't make the Activision Blizzard cut. But developer Double Fine's Tim Schafer said "Brutal Legend is fine". (Only once!) There were rumblings that a "non-traditional" publisher would pick up the action heavy metal title. MTV? The company tells Variety that it won't be publishing the game:
We are big fans of [Double Fine chief] Tim Schafer. We hope the game finds a good home.
That's kinda vague PR speak from MTV.

I would publish it if I had the means...
I was totally looking forward to this to bring me out of the murk that is generically brown fps's and serious action games. We need a little humour!
Psychonauts was great, we all need something like that again. Need I reiterate what Yahtzee recommend you do if you didn't buy that particular title?

Damn, that Shafer dude doesn't have it going for him. First Psychonauts gets the boot and sells way below target, now Brutal Legend is on the chopping block.
Really hope they find another good publisher.

This doesn't look like a niche tittle.
Why would no one want to publish it?
Is it because of Schafer's record with...um sales?

Tim Schafer has never had a bomb on his hands, and this game is destined to follow his excellent record.

Awww... Who, then, will be the torch bearer for Brutal Legends? :( Ubisoft? Or maybe even EA? >>
By the way, you may want to end that italics tag in your article, Bash. ^_^

Well, maybe it's because they already have a publisher! Right? Right....?
@Grecaun: Because Brutal Legend, has so far, been highly awaited by many. For a ton of people, Tim Schafer has never led us wrong.
And yet, the game has been, from what we've been able to see, desperately looking for a publisher.
So, this is worrisome news for a couple of reasons.
@SamL_: Time traveler or psychic?

I wish nothing but horrible things on the unfunny Jack Black, but the theme of the game is interesting and obviously Schafer's level of quality says it would likely be awesome.

If there was a game that would show MTV wasn't just for the quick buck getting into gaming was this one, a Rock N Roll game by master Tim Schafer and the voice of Jack Black (and probably a few other big stars, since someone already named dropped David Bowie getting reached), yet, MTV won't pay for this.
If they replaced Jack Black with Jaret Leno, they would probably make a video game award show just to promote this one...

I wouldn't count MTV out yet...
Also this is an example of why gaming journalism (and in many cases media journalism) is considered a joke. The original article completely fails to mention the source, and in the gaming industry PR/corportate tends to be the last people to get notified of anything that isn't inked out.

Well, someone will put it out, even if it's just a PC release via Steam or Greenhouse or even GameTap. I do hope someone will pick it up-- and I'm sure someone will... Tim is too big a legend in the industry for everyone to overlook him. Hell, if American Magee still gets work, someone will take this on... it's just too bad Majesco isn't doing this anymore, I bet they'd be in for it.

Brutal Legend is meshing my three favorite things together: comedy, rock, and video games! I really can't believe it when someone says something negative about Brutal Legend, Psychonauts, etc., because Tim Schafer is the man!

Good. The words "MTV" and "metal" should not even be used in the same sentence. Unless we're talking nu-metal, hair metal, or metalcore.

The sad thing is Tim Schafer games $#%&$#@ rock but don't translate into huge sales. People are shallow! look at how many people are willing to pay to sit though the Scary Movies, Epic Movies, etc!

@beantastic!: I am guilty of never getting around to playing Psychonauts. I have however played Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango. All great adventure games, but the problem with them is...they're adventure games. Many of the puzzles are outright illogical/random, and of course this breaks the gameplay. I don't know about anyone else, but with the exception of Full Throttle (the easiest adventure game I've ever played), I consulted a walkthrough for about 50% of the game for all the games mentioned, thus turning the game into a movie.
Psychonauts isn't an adventure game though, so I definitely have to check it out.

This is why in the future I hope they help studios like Double Fine and cut out the middle man. I mean a downloadable game much like the xbox classic games on Live. I see them like penny arcade, that should there game came on in normal disc form im sure it would not do well because there a niche group. But because penny arcade did it only through xbl, it made good change.

This is as because I was looking forward to more weirdness like Psychonauts, but instead of a psychic kid camper who ran away from the circus, I was going to be playing a hard rocking viking roadie with a battleaxe guitar. Oh well. Here's to hoping the game gets a new publisher soon!

What I don't get is that for both this game and Ghostbusters, you no longer need a publisher. Just release it on the PSN and XBLA. Even if the game flops, you would make a better profit since the developers would get ALL of it!!!

This is what I hate about video games these days: no company wants to take a chance on something different.
Everybody wants to churn out the next Halo, World of Warcraft, whatever. Video games are no longer even fun to me. When some company comes out and tries to do something new that isn't mainstream, it gets passed up as a possible flop due to an audience not existing for the game.
Guitar Hero was the same way. Look at how that game blew up.
MTV is basically saying: we don't want to take a chance on this game because it probably won't return our investment. But we'll gladly shit out another iteration of rock band with minimal upgrades and charge out of the ass for it.
God I miss the late 90's and early 2000's. Video games weren't coporately made riding a hype machine into massive sales. Its no wonder I've been buying more and more older games on ebay...
