My Aquarium Brings Relaxing Aquatic Landscapes to WiiWare
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 3:20 AM on August 13, 2008
Blue Oasis - or My Aquarium as it will be called in the states - is coming to WiiWare sometime later this year. What can we expect? gravel, plant life and 40 different types of fish. Hopefully the game will cost 500 points like it does on the Japanese store; I can't imagine paying much more for an aquarium simulator. Regardless, it's kinda nice to see someone taking a twist on the whole Nintendogs craze. The only thing I want to know is can I get my fish to fetch?

@Go Team Venture:
That "that wii ocean game no one bought" is still selling fine and up to around 600,000 so far.
It is magnificent - give it a try.

@GyrFal: I'm not trying to turn it into a debate I just think the Big N has lost something along the way. Sure I can break out Wii Sports during Thanksgiving or some special event but when people come over and even I want to play something solo the Wii keeps getting passed over for everything else. I think I've used my XBOX, Fusion Frenzy to be exact, more in the past 6 months than the Wii. I'm really hoping that the Wii Motion Plus brings the Wii what it needs because more often than not that's the biggest complaint I and everyone who has played the Wii at my house has, it's not accurate enough.

This would be nice is fish weren't like, THE WORST PET EVER! All you can do is look at them. And just for looking pretty they expect to be fed? I guess this will be something you leave out to show off to guests, just like a real aquarium Man, FUCK FISH!

It does look rather pretty though. Kind of like those old Windows screensavers...

its kinda of like that wii ocean game no one bought but more in depth. what im looking forward to doing os breeding my fish and then letting my aquarium just sit on my wonderful 1080p 46" while i do home work. just a relaxing setting that is.

It's supposed to be something you leave on your idle TV? I know it's a rare concern given how cheap electricity is, but isn't this... a waste of the stuff? Not to say that aquariums aren't totally sweet, but... eh, forget it, no one cares about the environment.

This is still not getting me to turn on my Wii, I'm a PS3 convert! I was waiting for Dead Rising but now not so much. The Big N had my youth and I had hoped to see the light again but all these game just scream mediocre. I have Zelda, Galaxy, Mario Kart and both Resident Evil games but I only did end up beating Resident Evil the rest I just can't seem to get into. Oh how times have changed.

@zombie16thc: I'm not advertising for Tropicana, I just think that a nice glass of OJ that's always fresh, never from concentrate would hit the spot. I mean, Tropicana all-natural juice has twice the potassium of a banana, all of the calcium of a glass of milk, and 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C in a convenient, delicious glass of orange juice. Which can be drunk while playing My Aquarium.

The irony of jumping the shark and an aquarium game is not lost on Nintendo -what great sense of humor they have.

It's nothing really great, but it's a nice little anti-game (if anybody considers that a genre) for some players.
It's a lot cheaper & easier than actually owning a real aquarium & it could be used either as a screensaver or decoration for a casual party.
The only catch would be to feed the fish every day, but there's no serious downsides if you let them die (just grab a another fish & try again).

@GyrFal: I could come out and say My Aquarium = waste of points and dev time but that's no fun either, is it? This game is akin to the $1 DVD's of Fireplace, Babbling Broke and Moving Clouds. I hold Nintendo up to high standards and they seem to be losing it. I would take Donkey Konga over this or how about make this a twofer throw in Seaman in this engine and they have a deal.
@dry-roasted-peanuts: Maybe but I recently went back and beat Zelda, Contra and Metroid on the DS homebrew emulator on a train ride and they still have the same level of fun.
@Avonej: Thanks for the health tip, however I still don't consider this a game, it's more like maintain some fish.

It'd be nice for background ambience but only if you could use your own (or no) music. And then Hudson goes and tries to make a "game" out of it by req'ing you to feed the fish and whatever, but if I owned this I'd just want to leave it on and not have to spend any time whatsoever maintaining the thing.
Last year (I think) Sega released an LCD aquarium clock, priced something like $200- and I'm not talking LCD like what you think I am, I'm talking fucking dot-matrix, no definition, all 100+ fish species just blocky, blocky silhouetes. $5 for a good looking (within the Wii range), modifiable aquarium sim isn't a bad idea at all (though more fish would be better, and even better they allow more user-generated content).

I think it's cute. That said, oner of the things the kept me from really enjoying Nintendogs was the need to boot it up everyday just to feed them. It ended up feeling like work.
On top of that, I have 6 betta. I can't imagine getting a vertual one.

I see nobody sees the biggest flaw here:
"FEED YOUR FISH EVERY DAY"
It's not just a pretty screensaver or background ambiance thing. It's another responsibility. I don't know if your fish will end up floaters if you forget to play, but it just seems like a hassle.
