Myst Coming To The iPhone
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 10:40 AM on August 22, 2008
In its day Myst was a great looking curiosity. It drew the eye and — when it first appeared — was pretty much guaranteed to attract a crowd of people who would marvel that such a thing was even possible. Ultimately, it was revealed as being a little style-over-substance.
Is it wrong to suggest that the iPhone is the perfect platform for a Myst revival? Lets hope not, because that is exactly what is coming. Cyan have posted a status report to the Myst Online forums that contains a little announcement about iMyst - a port of the original Myst to Apple's little slab of magic.
It could work really well, actually. Being able to cart those puzzles around with you might make them a bit easier to solve (having to fire up your 486 whenever you had a flash of inspiration was always a pain) and it might well make the perfect public transport companion.
Also, Myst had terrible 3G reception. You see? Made in heaven.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: No. :) I'll give you my Myst stuff if you give me your PS3 and LBP when you get it.
@Aye Mak Sicur: Yes, action figures of Atrus and the "villian" of Myst 3. I have them say "Shorah" to each other. Sadly, when Atrus links, I have to make the "Zeeee waaaa waaa...." linking sound. Then I throw Atrus across the room.
@Aristeia: Yes, Myst love. It's sad that most gamers don't understand that there was more going on than the games, there were also well written books. There are plenty of games which I would love to see in other forms of media. I do admit the first time I saw Myst in action, I said "how can this be any fun?" But, I received it as a gift for Christmas (in the future, Xmas) and I was sucked into the story. I loved the fact that you truly have no clue what's going on and you discover the story as you go. I understand that it's not for everyone, but at least you tried.
I forgot to mention that I have several Myst shirts. Squee, I less than 3 you!

Does anyone else remember the game Cosmic Osmo? It was put out by the same people who later went on to make Myst, and it was vastly awesome. It was like Myst, with all the exploration and imagination, but none of the frustration. I really wish I could play it again.

@waterhand: Uh. Jesus, Myst? Myst worship? Really?
Well, w/e. Basement or not, I think D&D and other tabletop games are far and away more interesting than fuggin Myst series. I haven't played much, but what I have is hella fun.
As for Myst... my first instinct was to think, "sweet!" My second was, "oh wait, I don't care."
It's kinda too bad. I love the idea of this type of thing, but not Myst necessarily. Myst is (well, it was at the time) pretty and all, but I hated the puzzles, and to go back to that now would be wrong on so many levels.
I want to see more old PC games revived on the iPhone. I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE some old school Lucas Arts point-and-click adventure games.
Come on! Day of the Tentacle! Sam and Max hit the road! MONKEY FRICKIN ISLAND. Full bloody Throttle >_<
... ok, too excited.
Still... it would be awesome, right?

Also, Myst had terrible 3G reception.
Couldn't that have anything to do with the reports of the iPhone having bad 3G anyway thanks to the chip they used.

FRICK! Now I need an iPhone. Too bad Myst DS wasn't good. Fun fact! I have 3 copies of Myst, 3 copies of Riven and 3 copies of Myst III. I have the Myst III action figures and 5 copies of the book "From Myst to Riven". I have 3 copies of each of the books.
More fun fact! I also don't have a life, but I'm also not living in my mom's basement playing D&D.

Holy smokes! Seeing the amazing graphics for the time, I never thought for even a second that I'd get to play it on a MOBILE phone some day (they weren't widespread at all back then).
And all that in no more than 9-10 years!

Sadly my first experience with Myst was just recently on the DS port and I didn't enjoy it much. I'm going to have to try it out on PC though because I'm heard such great things about it.

Now a whole new generation of gamers can know the pleasures of a game in which you an accordion folder to organize all the notes you have to take.
But now you can do it in public!
p.s. I'm glad they didn't release realmyst, as the added difficulty of guide rails not highlighting important objects for you might cause your average iPhone users mind to collapse.

@sarcasmOD: Myst has a great story, no mistake, but the substance of a game is in its gameplay, and Myst was frankly lacking. Scads of trial-and-error puzzles... it was groundbreaking for its time in a lot of ways, but even when it first came out I wasn't impressed with it as a game.
The books were pretty cool, though.

Not a lot of substance? I have to disagree. While not much was given to you in the way of cutscenes explaining the story, if you read the books you found and put the pieces of the story you find in them together, you actually get a very deep and complex representation of the Myst universe. The fighting brothers, the ancient history of the worls you travel too, its a very riveting story. To me anyway.

This is like when I heard that Frotz made it to the Iphone Apps. First "Cool!" and then after 10 minutes of playing Zork thinking "I am way too young to give a damn about text adventures."
To be fair I played until I was eaten by a grue, and haven't played since. Considering my limited and frustrating experience with Myst, this will probably be a similar experience.

Haha I have one of those myst books. I saw it back in the grocery store in the mid 90s, and even though I really enjoyed Myst(it was one of the only games us Mac guys had), the only reason I bought it was because I was so shocked there was a book based on a videogame. It's still in my basement actually.

@bobtheduck: You can also go to D'ni without the white page. It's not really an ending, more than it is you're stuck wandering around in D'ni with no means of escape.

Does THIS version come with the guide like the PC one did? I got frustrated going through the forest world, and the fact it was impossible to die, and decided to cheat and read the manual. Low and behold, the game could be beaten in under 10 minutes in the opening area by grabbing the white page from this box within two or three movements from the places you start, and going in and opening the chamber to the white book and putting it in. It is fun collecting the red and blue pages too, though, so you can see the only losing screens in the game.

@Aye Mak Sicur:
Sure you can. On the iPhone, you can take screenshots by holding the power button and pressing the home button. You'll just have to leave the game to LOOK at your screenshots, but I'm sure the game will save your position so you can quickly jump back in if you have to.

I don't think it was. I think your post was 'ultimately revealed' by me as being needlessly flippant about an important milestone in gaming history. Next time you're playing the intro to Half-Life 2 give a thought to the narrative style the Miller brothers introduced would you? There's a good chap.

So much hate for Myst... What, couldn't solve the logic puzzles, gave up, and called it a shit game? Give me a break.
(deep breath) Ok...
I'm glad that they're porting Myst to other platforms, but putting them on a portable is not the way to go. Myst was intended for a big screen, where you can appreciate the details of each image. By saying that, it wouldn't work on the Wii either, until they can display images higher than 480p.

Let's hope they properly rewrite the code of the game and redesign the size of buttons and such. The DS port was really bad coded and had buttons you could only reach if you knew they were there. I don't understand how that thing received the green light.
@jenvik: Never heard about that game... I'll have to check, being the Cyan whore I am.
@boopadoo: You're absolutely right. Myst and Riven are probably the finest pieces of logic I've ever found. And I do not intend to be sarcastic: Riven and Myst are my favourite games ever.

@waterhand: Uru was a great concept, and I enjoyed it immensely, as well. It just didn't have the right marketing push behind it, I think.

I think the world and story of Myst, as well as the concept is really cool. If they had ever decided to actually update the gameplay, interface, and graphics to something more modern that brings the concept to a new level I think it'd be a very interesting experience. Like perhaps a first person free-roam with a more traditional control scheme instead of the point and click method for one thing. There's all kinds of things they could do.

i also have to disagree with the style over substance angle. i got hours of joy out of myst, and i was preoccupied with it more then any other game. there's only two things i don't like about the original myst:
1) there are no bedrooms or bathrooms on myst island. how the fuck does a family live on an island with no beds or toilets? there isn't even a place to sit down.
2) you can never go back. i've tried playing it again and it takes, like, an hour. and that's if you ignore the fact that you know the solution to the final puzzle from the start. but that's kind of how adventure games are.

@pasquinelli: Seeing as I have 5 copies, you'd think I'd make the time to read it. But, from what I read, it is really informative and tells a great Making Of story. It's very hard to find now and it's going for close to $70 on eBay. But, I'd suggest checking discount book stores first.
@elocanth: Yes, I was disappointed with the execution of URU due to really, really slow servers. Hopefully Cyan with fix the problem. Third times a charm.
@EloraHRanma: I agree that IV wasn't that good. I only played it to finish the original Myst's story line. BUT, you should play V. It's well done and ties up all the loose ends (espcecially if you've played URU).

A predictable ending ruined an otherwise amazing story. The puzzles were way too hard for me since I was 10. I used a strategy guide which was ingeniously written as a journal, so you can understand how you could have worked out the puzzles yourself if you weren't stupid.
I'm curious as to how I would fare as an adult, but probably not curious enough.
