Naruto: Ultmate Ninja Storm Getting Day One DLC
Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:30 PM on August 21, 2008
CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama is now the number one reason I want to learn to speak Japanese. He has this quick-talking, sly sort of accent that reminds me a bit of a stereotypical used car salesman that is completely compelling to listen to. I almost wish that his translator would stop interrupting at the Atari press conference at the Games Convention today, though that would have meant me missing him announcing that Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm will be hitting the PlayStation 3 with downloadable content available from day one. What kind of downloadable content? Unfortunately he couldn't say, but either way, it's good to see an anime fighting game - traditionally fire and forget deals - with post-release support already in the works.
And yes, Matsuyama, who considers himself the ultimate Naruto fan, ended his presentation with a joyful shout - "Believe it!" Sounds so much better coming from a Japanese used car salesman.

Day 1 DLC? Put it on the disk

The game looks great but after the demo I can't help feeling like the fighting system won't have much longevity.
Hopefully there's more to the game than snazzy graphics...like an awesome single player mode or something. I could care less about DLC like costumes and voices if the game itself has no inherent replay value.

This is what I hate about DLC.
If it's ready day one, then it should definetly be on the disc.
This kind of thing really pisses me off.

Usually you watch the anime and then buy the game. Well this game is going to make me watch the show. The game looks amazing, and I simply have to get it. But I don't want to buy it and have no clue what the story is about. So, I'm going to watch the anime show. I've heard great things about it.

...And yet another headline typo today. I don't mean to sound like a broken record (if so, please let it be Rick Astley one), but this has rapidly gone from being a casual easter egg hunt to being the norm.

Ehh. I have no real issue with day one DLC.......
Wait for it...
AS LONG AS ITS FREE!!!!!
Other wise yeah, then its a fucking rip off that should have been included in the first place.

There should be laws against this. If it's capable of being prepared day 1, it's worth putting on the disk/giving access to from the start as well. No more please; at least wait a month or so to make it appear like you're not blatantly cashing in. Unless, of course, it'll be completely free of charge.

Seriously, I cannot believe how good this game looks. I love how it looks like this expansive 3D environment, but it plays like the 2D ultimate ninja games on PS2.
And yeah, the DLC is probably japanese costumes/characters that have been since revealed in the US storyline, but either way, that's awesome. I'm sure anime fans are tired of having to buy the next game in an installment for the 3 extra characters the next story arc brings.

It's just another way to get money from people.

To everyone complaining about Day 1 DLC...remember, there is time between when the disk goes gold and when it is released. Much for the same reason there are "Day 0" patches for PC games, devs can work before the game ends up on store shelves. Except, in the case of paid DLC (if that's even what this is), its not so much "essential bugfixes to run the game" (as it often is in the PC world) that didn't make it into the final gold disc, but optional side content.

@verrius: But its also about pacing. We didn't need Bring Down the Sky to come out with Mass Effect. Four months later was a much better option since many players were itching for more at that point.

This is the same crap they pulled with Beautiful Katamari, release only half the game unlocked on the disc and make the player pay to unlock the rest, thus doubling the cost of the game.

360 one had pretty sharpish DLC - not to mention the Japanese language option that saved the game. I'll give this a whirl, but to be honest I'm more looking forward to what Ubisoft have up their sleeve for a sequel to the 360 Naruto.

What is the difference between each Naruto: Ultimate Ninja game? This will be the fourth one, the first for the PS3. Do they just improve the graphics, gameplay mechanics and such a bit each time?
I mean, is it basically the same game just...better? Or perhaps there are story/campaign modes for each one that are very different?
I want to play one of the three available for the PS2, but don't know if I should start with the first or skip to the third.
Anyway, Storm looks really, really good. I love the clean anime graphics style. It'll be just like watching the show, only we'll be in control! :)

This is kind of dumb. Put whatever the DLC is in the full game. Why hold back any sort of content so you can release it as DLC. Oh right, Money.

This is kinda bad unless it's free but in the end it's up to them what they make as optional content and what's integral content (stuff included already).
The game looks awesome though, I'm a big naruto fan and I can't help but feel I'm missing out now (having only 360).

@Alpha85: What about dattebayo? Are they going to sue CyberConnect2 for copyright infringment, claiming that they own the rights to Naruto? They've already (successfully) filed hundreds of copyright claims on YouTube against licensed content they sure as hell don't own.

If the DLC was free and it's something that wasn't thought of when they put the disk out I'd think it would be OK, but if it was a sell item on first day of release, then they're just plain greedy bastards. Because they could have put that in the game but chose to nickel and dime you out of more money, not conntent with the 60 bucks they get from the game. Well I wasn't going to get this anyway but I'm sure they have a following.

How is the single player set-up in this game? Is it sandbox style through Konoha (and the other villages)?
I hope the DLC includes more characters. I believe there's only 25 playable characters total in this one (Naruto 3 on PS2 had 50+ characters).

I'm very proud to say that I have not purchased any DLC. The only way they will stop is if people stop buying this crap. Otherwise it's only going to get worse.

Day 1 DLC is out of order if it costs money.
It takes away all the principles of gaming and should be stood up to against.
If its free then its good since it shows the developer has tried even after gold to make sure they're game is better. Which I am all for.

Just like the Demo, the game already comes with English and Japanese tracks. The many benefits of having the Blu-ray's capacity. The Demo was just a demo; and they didn't need to include both English and Japanese but CyberConnect2 has already announced that the game will come with English and Japanese voice tracks for convenience and well...the many fansub watchers.
