Nearly 150 Screenshots of Fallout 3 Leaked
Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on August 18, 2008
Although I probably should leave anything in Japanese to Bash, pictures speak any language, and there are nearly 150 of them of Fallout 3 that have hit the Internet following the Zenimax Asia expo (Zenimax owns Fallout developer Bethesda.) Tipster Brother None, the forum admin over at No Mutants Allowed, writes: "Apparently the people viewing Fallout 3 in the ZeniMax Asia showing in Taiwan did not take their NDAs very seriously". Apparently so. We have a gallery of 28 screenies on the jump, with a link to the entire set.

@Ulquiorra Schiffer:
Clearly he's not the only one because I felt exactly the same about Obliv. The game was ok and you could really get immersed in that huge world if you allowed yourself... but to me the visual quality was WAY over hyped and the combat system was mediocre.
Thankfully, there are mods. :p

@QualityJeverage: I feel i need to explain myself more thoroughly in my defense of Oblivion. Go back and look at what was being done at that time. Nothing comes close to the scale oblivion had. Sure, they fell a little short, but that's part of what makes Bethesda so awesome. They always shoot for the stars, even if it does usually end in a lot of funny little glitches they have to fix later. And Oblivion was not in the least bit clunky, empty or boring. Having played it more than in other game in existence i can say it never gets old, there are always new and different things to do. Now, you have to take what i say with a grain of salt because i AM the biggest Oblivion fanboy ever. Anway, to each his own i guess. :)

NEED, that is the word for it. I need this game. Not the same way i need air and water, but the way i need to achieve greatness, the way i need to kill civilians in GTA4 even though (contrary to Fox news) you don't get "points" for it. I need this game because Bethesda always rocks my socks off, because this series is a mandatory part of anyone's collection. I need it because i want it and want it because i need it.

This game looks great, but I'm not convinced, after I was so disappointed by Oblivion. The same green hills for 14 square miles, ugly character models, awful AI, mediocre combat. Was I the only one who didn't like it?
Either way, Bethesda lost me with Oblivion, so my anticipation of Fallout 3 can only be described as cautious optimism.

@angryoaf:
Coincedentally i've just given Oblivion another go, and i was a bit shocked with some of the textures and graphics.
For the time it was top-notch, but now pales in comparison to some of the newer releases.
Luckily, as you've said, there's mods. Loads of mods.
I've installed about 30 now, getting me new spells, graphics, physics, twice the amount of monsters, a new leveling system, a dragon to fly on, improved stealth, ability to decapitate.....and the list goes on.
I encourage anyone who's willing to try oblivion again to take a look at those mods, they make the game brilliant.
Hopefully Bethesda has given some of them a look, as there's much to learn from many of them, such as the combat system adaptations.

@QualityJeverage: I disagree about Oblivion because I really enjoyed the game. However I am not in the least bit excited about Fallout 3, it has failed to impress me. I'm in a similar boat too, it just struck me as a case of "too much to do, too little reason to do it". Not to mention the repetitious dialogue and horrid character designs really didn't help.
However, the expansion pack fixed some of the problems I had...I just don't know though, I don't completely trust the game to be anything more than "Oblivion with guns", and neither part of that statement appeals to me.
I'm gonna rent it though, since my roommate REALLY wants to play it.

I liked Oblivion but over time I realised it really wasn't that great. Still, I enjoyed it.
Its hard to not look at these screens and think this looks extremely like it. I never played the past Fallouts so I wouldn't know if they were similar to Oblivion in the first place, but this definitely reminds me of it. Looks great though. Can't wait to see how it plays.

@Ulquiorra Schiffer: But that's the thing, I don't consider Oblivion's "scale" to be any major accomplishment. On a whole, it was one small set of content, copy+pasted several times so that it could fill several square miles of game world. The dungeons all looked the same, the environments were all identical save for a little snow in the north.
Size of a gameworld means nothing when every part of that world is populated by the same thing. All Bethesda did was make enough content for one area, and multiplied it until it filled a larger space.
Even that small amount of content that they had, to me, felt broken and unpolished. Other games at the time may not have been as large as Oblivion, but what they did have was polished and functional and fun to play.
I'd rather have 10 hours of solid, coherent gameplay than 100 hours of copy+pasted quests and broken combat.

I personally couldn't get into Oblivion myself, maybe it's because I was playing CoH/V hardcore at the time and couldn't bring myself to devote the time to it. Maybe it was the setting, I can't get into the whole Medieval thing.
Though Fallout 3 looks like it'll be a blast, I kinda like the Sci-Finess of it.

@QualityJeverage: Well, see that comment makes me think i'm not the only one biased towards the game. If you think all the terrain is the same except for the northern areas, then you really didn't play that much. And if you think all the dungeons were the same, you didn't visit that many of them. I admit the combat was a little repetitive, but the as for the actual scale and layout of the game area, i found it very detailed and diverse, if in a more subtle way than most games where the world is split up into chaotically different areas that look like they shouldn't even be on the same planet. But, I digress, saying it could have been better but is still the best game in terms of scope that i have ever played (and i've playes A LOT).

I commend Bethesda on their unique ability to take a franchise like Fallout and make it as dull, drab, cliche, and witless as possible, sucking the life and spark right out of it. How boring does this look? The people who claimed this would be nothing more than "Oblivion with guns" weren't kidding, except Oblivion was at least pleasing to the eye. Bethesda needs a whole new art department and some real writers on board. Ugh.

This 'race' stuff is bullshit.Asian, caucasian, african-american? That just promotes social segregation. Superb move, Bethesda. Um, waitaminute, isn't this game going to be bought by prepubescent kids who barely know right from wrong? Way to force the fact that non white skin-colored people aren't american. And the black dude is african-american? WTF? Millions of africans are white (and have been, for like, forever). They should use a term like 'heritage'. @everybest: I think his slam against Taiwanese attitudes toward intellectual property is perfectly justified, given that the country has a long history of problems on this front. A reflexive defensive response accusing him of cultural ignorance, however, is not. I don't need to have visited China or immersed myself in Chinese culture, for example, to be able to justly criticize the Chinese predilection for piracy.

@AtomicPlayboy: I think your subtle lumping together of China and Taiwan is a good expression of that lack of culture immersion :P.
What does piracy have to do with violating terms of NDA? Certainly they are both serious copyright infringements, but the latter offense is usually only accomplished by journalists (in general), whereas any consumer can pirate. There shouldn't be an assumed relationship between these leaked pictures, and the 65 TWD DVD you bought in the night market.
Although there is a sharp difference between the enforcement of IPR law (as opposed to the law itself, which is fairly consistent in implementation in WTO countries) from the developed to underdeveloped parts of the world, it is not a logical deduction to compare this case and the lax enforcement. After all, plenty of journalists in America have violated terms of NDA, yet IP regulations haven't yet been thrown out the window.
