New Mirror's Edge Gameplay Trailer Shows Free Running Acrobatic Insanity
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 1:00 PM on August 21, 2008
Even though Mirror's edge made Ashcraft a little ill at E3, the game looks like it's going to be one hell of a ride. This quick paced gameplay trailer gives us a little taste of what we can expect this upcoming September when the game is released.

Mmmmmm... great open level design, and the tease at the end was good too. So far this is looking like Breakdown 2.0, and although it's far from the same story and action, I'll go ahead and tell myself it's a spiritual successor. Because damn if it doesn't remind me of it, just more runny.

When you play a game like this in FP, do you really know where you are suppose to go ? I am afraid you might get lost while you are being chase by people. To me this game is like Prince of Persia in first person.

Looks interesting. Level design reminds me of that classic one in Half Life 1, so that's a compliment for sure. Not entirely sure it looks fun though... But then again, it's hard to get sold on a concept without playing it yourself. Definite potential.

It looks awesome, but at the same time I'd like to see a video of a person who's playing through an area for the first time. This person knows exactly where to go and what to do for the whole area, making it seem much more fluid than it likely is to play in real life :/.

@xenocide38:
Well EA is not always EA. This comes from DICE who were bought by EA. Yes they're considered an EA company but I still view them as a separate company. One subsidiary doesn't exactly make up for all of EA's faults and they have plenty of them.

Amazing. Day one purchase for me. Though it may not be a big title for a lot, I consider it as one of the purchases this year worth it's salt.
I did get a bit motion sick as well but if I do indeed need to blow any chunks, I'll try to find time to recover for more acrobatic action.

@StevieQ: Actually, I was just thinking how it would be awesome if they had a "record" mode that could play back in 3rd person. Something similar to Halo 3, that would let you re-watch what you just did, as if you were watching a movie.

@Grahamunculus:
Well I think playing it will actually reduce the motion sickness effect since you're the one controlling the action, rather than watching someone else controlling it. It's the disjointed/disconnected feeling that gives us the sickness. That's minimized when in control. It doesn't effect everyone though, and there are some that just won't be able to handle it at all.

After 20 years of gaming, only Omega Boost has managed to give me motion sickness (though that might have something to do with post-surgery meds). I hope I can stomach this game, cuz it looks freakin' incredible.
I'm still a bit worried there'll be a lot of breaks in the action (the demo guy obviously knows exactly how to play the level) and hope to God there's a good checkpoint system in place, but I'm really rooting for them to pull this one off.

Posted 1:14 PM 21/8/08
@tomsamson: I kind of had the same thought myself. I can easily picture myself giving up after fall number 10 or 11 if its from that super high height. Let's hope the checkpoints are indeed forgiving, and they don't use the typical developer cop-out of "less checkpoints equals more difficulty!"
The other thing that kind of makes me go :\ is the enviroment. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the entire game was like that first trailer...outdoor enviroments in realistic cities. As it looks now I'll have to believe that every factory appears to have ledges that can only be accessed by jumping off of walls and crawling across ledges. Suspension of disbelief, and all that.
The last thing I'm kinda confused about is the apparent lack of...well, anything but your character and the enviroment. No music, even mood music at certain places, barely any other characters aside from your own. Hell, I didn't even see any complex background animations.
Those (admittedly nitpicking) gripes aside, this is looking nothing short of excellent. It's not a must-buy for me yet, but its oh-so-very close.

@karasu is my homeboy: All the stuff I've seen seems to follow pretty frequent patterns. Horizontal bars let you swing, gaps can almost always be jumped with some speed, any ledges can be climbed, stuff that you have to balance on(horizontal bars, thin ledges) have some sort of color to them such as the green when she was scooting along those ledges. I think if you pay attention to color, a lot of the choices become really clear and intuitive, at least from what I've seen.

@Elwood2112: Where you go is outlined in red as a general guide. There is combat but it's mostly optional. Did you hear, after she kicked down the sniper, the voice in her ear said "You can take the other snipers out, or just stay out of their way!" The player quickly put her rifle away and kept running. But if you wanted to, you could look for and snipe all the guards.
This is part of why ME is so interesting.

There's that magical dot I read about in the middle of the screen.
Aside from the effing amazing graphics, I'm also constantly thinking while playing this, "Uh...would I know to do that?" I know there are things in red, and I know there are probably multiple routes, but I can't wait to see how well the game trains the player to think like a free runner. Some of these things I wouldn't think to do as of right now (like how she runs up one walls and jump-grabs something behind the wall she ran up...I didn't even see what she's jumping to grab before she began her wall run) but I'm sure the game does a great job of getting you ready.
This is not to be missed. Cannot wait.

@Scazza: I really don't see the problems you're talking about with getting lost and not being able to get back from exploring. If you look at the video, there are platforms all over the place and whenever you are near a route to the destination you get the red highlighted objects. As far as the controls go, it's super minimal, I think there's something like a "high" button for jumps and climbing, and a "low" button for crouching and sliding. I saw the game being demoed at comicon and from what I saw (I was watching jaw dropped for a little too long) the controls are actually more forgiving than you would think. The guy died quite a few times and was still able to get back to places with relative ease.
@DONNYchiban: What do you mean a faster fps? How many bullets did the player fire in that video? I would say that's a lot different than any other fps out there. Also, I'm a firm believer in the first person perspective, everything I've seen has convinced me that it works even if it's not for everyone. (In other words, if you didn't like first person games before, why should you like this?)

Completely understandable with the motion sickness, but oh man.
Looks like someone FINALLY got the whole first-person platformer thing right - along with the whole 'see your body' bit. It was always awkward and felt wrong, but totally works here.
My only concern is that, sharp as the visuals are, the environments in this part all look so bland and generic, seems like it would be easy as hell to get lost. If that was me playing I no doubt would have been standing around bumping into walls incredibly lost, rather than making like Tarzan.

@Neobara: Actually I don't think it's coming out in September. Because they said it's supposed to come out in Spring or Summer 2009 and DICE just released Battlefield: Bad Company so I seriously doubt it will come out this year anyway. But yeah, I'm so excited for this game. It looks amazing. The graphics are crazy good. I don't see why people would get motion sickness from this game. The camera is not near as shaky as Cloverfield and tons of people got motion sickness from that but me and my friends did not and we saw the theater version. So I'm pretty sure I will not get motion sickness from this. I'm probably gonna buy this game.

It's a pretty title, but I can't help wondering that it won't be as good as everyone thinks. Call me a pessimist, but hey, I just see a faster-paced FPS.
I'm sorry, but I still can't get into a 1st person free running game (I don't say "parkour"). I've said it once before and I'll say it again: free running in real life = 1st person fun. Free running in a 1st person video game = we'll see...
I'm not counting the game out or anything; it's not on my list, but I'm not hating on it. I just want a 3rd person camera, that's all.

Dont get me wrong, I think the game looks really cool, has a great concept to it. But this trailer shows some pretty epic gameplay problems. For one, its all well and good when the person demoing the footage knows where to go, but I can see the pace of the game being completely killed due to trying to find the right bar, or button. Notice about 3 times there was a button to press, I doubt any regular gamer would have found them so easily.
Plus with such massive locales, players will want to explore, but it will be VERY punishing to try and find a route to a possible secret, only to realize you have to start back at the start (at least that was the impression i got from the video, no other way to the top but that one route.
I hope they will address these concerns and possible pacing issues before it comes out. As of right now I am intrigued by the game, but also worried...

@Joebob-X: Okey doke, fair enough. I haven't been following this title much at all (just not interested in it, sorry) so I didn't know you didn't have to fire a shot at all. Given the nature of the game, I could have inferred, though.... I'll settle for it having FPS elements.
Nonetheless though, I just wish developer's would push all their high-profile titles to their limits, again, like MGS4. Yeah, I know, I'm asking for too much. There would only be like 2 game releases a year if that happened :-\

It's weird, I couldn't help looking at the area she was running around, especially towards the end, where all I could think was "whoever designed this place should be shot". Not in the game designer sense, but whoever in-game was responsible for a level that can only be successfully navigated by the character's unique skills.
Obviously it's not unique to this game, and it definitely won't stop me buying it, but there are only so many platforms that are completely disconnected from everything else with ladders that you need to jump to in order to climb . . .

@DONNYchiban: Saying they should toss in third person makes it sound a lot easier than it really is. They would have to completely rewrite the controls and slow the game down because turning in third person is going to be either slower or more jarring because you aren't as connected to the view. If you want a third person Mirror's Edge, you want a completely different game, unfortunately. As far as being convinced it's still FPS, they've said repeatedly that you can beat the whole game without firing a single shot and you get severe movement penalties for holding guns. Shooting(at least from the player's perspective) is the least important aspect of this game.

@Joebob-X: Assuming this isn't the only place in the game you can touch a gun, I'm going to call it an FPS. Now, I'm not saying there isn't also a platforming element, because that's apparently the big thing about this, but just like the similar Metroid Prime series (in that there's platforming and FPSing), I'm not being wowed. Now granted, I can't say I'm the biggest FPS fan out there, as CoD4 was the first straight FPS I actually enjoyed, but I'm not seeing what makes this so... innovative? No, not the word I'm looking for......... Hmmm, I guess I'm trying to say: "aside from the visuals, why is this game the next big thing?"
Also, I don't have anything against the 1st person perspective, but I just think it could have been better suited in the 3rd, or better yet, satisfy both parties by pulling a MGS4 and allow both perspectives to be used whenever! That would put this game on my list. I just don't think certain things are well suited for certain perspectives. Like I wouldn't want to play a 1st person fighter...

The gameplay looks unique and exciting, but I saw a ton of repeated assets in this video. Every "pile of boxes where one is red to signify you can climb it" was exactly the same, as well as the Emergency Gate buttons (but that's really nitpicking). I just wish it was completely free-roaming, with no hints on where to go with these preset red things. I'm sure the player can figure it out :P I would be thrilled if they put in the option to turn all the red off so you can really find every path on your own.
I will still buy it Day 1 regardless, I just notice things like repeated assets. I also notice catwalks on pillars for no reason, with a couple of banisters conveniently removed to make your path smoother :D

@DONNYchiban: And there is your biggest mistake! Condemned, first person fighter + horror, was an incredibly awesome game. Taking pre-established perspectives and ideas for any genre and throwing them out the window can make for some very cool gameplay, and in my opinion making almost anything first person adds so much immersion that it's definitely worth trying.
One other great example of a game you wouldn't really want in first person is a puzzle game, right? Ever played Portal?

@PC+Mac Coexist: It's actually a slightly larger light blue dot. The video doesn't show it that well, but it definitely doesn't look like a dead pixel in full screen. Also, you can remove it in the options from what they've said.

@Joebob-X:
That's better, I suppose. I mean, it would slow you down a bit, but it would make you feel like you're actually running through a real area rather than a play ground.
Even still, what I really wanted from this game is some awesome free running in a big city. Imagine Liberty City, except being able to scale the walls and jump off shit at random. Assassin's Creed, but faster and modern.
Having paths like this predetermined, as in only one way to jump off a certain catwalk to get to the one way inside the building... I think I'm just expecting too much with the current technology, game development time, and budgetary concerns.

If some people are getting motion sickness from this game, it means it's really that good.
You know, it's called immersion.
And from the trailer, I imagine playing the game in a big screen with high quality, I'd probably get kinda dizzy too.

@DONNYchiban: Quite alright, but like I said as far as the third person goes, it really is that much work. It's also asking them to do something that isn't part of what they wanted for the game. Hopefully if you like the concept of the game, someone will make a third person version that you would like, but it will definitely be a different final product than this.

@PapaBear434: If you look closely, you will see that some of the objects actually did not change color until she got closer to them. It may just be rendering lag, but I don't think it is. They said she has "runner vision" so I am guessing that everything looks the same (as in normal) until you pick a place and run to it, then as you get closer, context clues tell you whether it is a jump, slide, grab, ect.
I have no idea if this is true, which is shy I want so badly to get my hand on this game. If the play is as intuitive as the videos suggest, and as free roaming as they claim, this may be one of my favorite games this year.
I haven't been this excited for a game since Shadow of the Colossus, and that absolutely demolished my expectations and left me literally speechless at times.

@FadedEchos: Hey that's not fair! When I said I wouldn't want to play a first person fighter, I meant a pure fighter along the lines of SC or Street Fighter (not boxing, if you're gonna say that next, ha). Besides, Condemned isn't really a fighter, but by my earlier logic, fine. But where does the line between realism and enjoyability blur? A game being more realistic in the first person is a fairly true statement, but I guess I'm just old school - I find enjoyability in being able to view the moves my character is performing when the motions are a big part of the gameplay. In other words, CoD4 works better as a 1st person title because all you really need is your gun, but Street Fighter would fail in that perspective, in my opinion, because NO ONE wants to see a Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku from the eyes of Ryu.
And for the record, I actually fell in love with Portal, despite never getting the chance to play it. 1st person puzzle, yes, but to my knowledge, you only really needed that gun thing, not amazing acrobatics, right?

@PC+Mac Coexist: That dot is there to prevent motion sickness. It's kind of like an anchor for your brain.
"EA said that DICE had interviewed ballerinas to see how they can perform spins without feeling sick. The trick they use is to focus on a certain object or spot on the floor while they spin, which inspired them to add the dot. That way players can focus on it as they run around. Although if you find it distracting or annoying, you do have the option to turn the dot off."

I really wonder if someone could make a decent first person fighter that isn't just boxing. Maybe someone can do a first person kickboxing game, I would be interested. As far as portal goes, you can do most of the puzzles without amazing acrobatics, but if you don't know the tricks to them, you'll sometimes need to have some really good timing and movement to get stuff done.

Truthfully as cool looking as the game is, I wish the devs spent more time making the levels seem a bit more realistic rather than tailoring them to the runners abilities.
Since it would cause far more creative ways of getting around rather than the obvious pipe hanging, plank walkway, platform jumps etc.
Granted this is just a single video, but was picking up waaaaay too much of the same stuff which kinda turned me off.
Its just a personal design pref of mine and I still must say the game is highly impressive and that I am looking forward to it.

Probably going to eat my words later, but i could really do without the bright red objects. For the most part it's obvious enough where i should want to go, and what those glowing things are telling me right now is "HERE BE INTERACTIVE OBJECTS". I also think it sort of borks the artistic direction; cool blues and greens next to bright screaming red doesn't do it for me at all.
Aside from the hey-dumbass-you-can-climb-this-ladder-because-its-a-ladder "runner vision"; awesome stuff. Here's hoping a harder difficulty setting eliminates the training wheels.

My metric for this game is how many times they're going to show off shooting. So far every time I've seen the player grab a gun they've dropped it as fast as possible ... so far so good. Also I love platforming, and the platforming looks intense. The idea of showing the player their available paths through turning things red is brilliant. That will help tremendously where people are concerned about pacing for people who aren't the developers of the game playing through it.

I mean, the level design seems mediocre at best, the jumping around bit got repetitive after maybe 5 jumps or so, and there wasn't a single thing that seemed to be out of the ordinary...
Of course, I'm probably judging the game way too soon( as I assume the outdoor levels would be more varied and well designed) but for now my interest in this game has dropped to zero :(

@Heliophage: I think that's going to be this game's biggest hurdle (not literally, obviously). Implementing free running in an environment where a fall means death, they have to kind of hold your hand (i.e. big red boxes, platforms, ladders that tell you what to jump off/on/towards) or it would be really frustrating. Hopefully they find a way to strike a good balance, but initially, for me, it's a little weak having all those bright red signposts telling you where to go. Everything else looks pretty dang good so far, though.

Love everything I've seen of this game. The only thing that might have kept me from getting it is that I tend to get motion sickness very easily in games, mostly in adventure games where the camera moves around a lot. It was really bad in the Simpson's Game but not so much in Ratchet and Clank Future, so it depends.
Anyway I'm getting this day 1 regardless.

How do you people not see this? It's the same 4 tricks over and over again: jump up boxes onto a ladder, walk from one ledge to another on a small beam, jump from ledge to ledge, run up a wall to jump off onto a ladder that was already next to you.
And aside from that, the next step is always either a) glaringly obvious (jump to the ledge in front of you) or b) turns red so you know which way is the one "right" way.
Standard EA.

Hi all, I feel that free-running should be about avoiding obstacles, at the moment the level design seems a bit like it's 'built' for freerunners! :)
for example, emergency exits separated from normal access by ledges just doesn't make sense :)

Wow, standard EA crap. The red items are the next step in the "puzzle". The whole game is mapped out in that trailer. If it's not glaringly obvious (a ledge, in front of you), they turn it red before you come up. She does the same three or four tricks during that entire trailer. Oh look, a box that I use as a ramp to jump to a ladder. Oh look, a balance beam. Oh look, a ledge I must jump to.
This game looked awesome but, now I am awake to EA's guile and for the love of god I hope you people wake up too.

@zanmato: This game looks like a standard FPS with faster controls and a more realistic/fluid camera :/ I
You are absolutely, 100% correct when you say "I don't get it."

To clarify a previous comment about there being a huge difference. I maen in name..... Parkour is the name of it... free running was just presented for english audiances because of how people react.(see how the person reacted that said free running instead of parkour :P) it was a term coined in Jump London and is only there for the english speaking crowd but "free running" doesnt technically exist its just a term coined in a movie...

This looks better than I had imagined, and the combat looks much more fun than the impression I had from some of the trailers.
But why oh why does every game have to opt for american voice acting? Especially when the dialogue is as lame as in this trailer, I think it'd benefit a game to go without any.
Games like Ico and SotC were brilliant because they kept dialogue to a minimum and had an obscure made-up language instead of a real one. The illusion of a fantasy world was much stronger.
