New Prince of Persia Developer Diary Shows Us the Works
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 5:40 AM on August 29, 2008
Just as the title says this first dev. diary from the Prince of Persia team shows us all sorts of stuff from the new acrobatics, to animation, sound design, and even a little tid bit from the story. Bottom line, the game looks awesome and I can't wait to try the roof running. Prince of Persia is currently scheduled to hit Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this holiday season.

@MantisDragon:
My sentiments exactly. Every new piece of footage psyches me up even more. New combat system looks amazing.

Looks a bit weird when he's cartwheeling on the ceiling. Falls on the wrong side of believable, even considering the context.
And what's wrong with that guy's chin??

Now I see where they got their inspiration from Assassin's Creed. Lets play a game of "He said, I heard".
HE SAID:
"imagine a map of a country with no small cities, only major ones, these cities are interconnected with highways, and you get to choose how you navigate between the cities. You can start in city A and go to B, and then C or you can start in city B and go to C and then go back to A. It's all up to you."
I HEARD:
"imagine a country map where you have these large cities, and they mostly all look the same, and you'll have your choice how to get to cities and in which order you want to complete them, but it doesn't really matter because as I said before, they're pretty much all the same. And in between them? nothing. absolutely nothing. well, I shouldn't say nothing, because you may see some people, and you may see an enemy or two, but that's just filler. mostly? nothing. It's just you, your partner, maybe a horse, and the long journey to the next mind-numbingly boring, repetitive task."

In the part where you see the guy working on the prince you can see his garments penetrate the princes skin. I've seen this in a couple of PoP videos already. They are probably not gonna fix it anymore. For me this is a most annoying visual glitch. They are tryin to do mighty cool things but can't even get the basics done. They shouldn't do fancy cloth-'simulations' when they can't control it right. A lot of games have these issues. I almost liked it better when they had less power for those 'tricks' but had less of these glitches also..

I didn't find this game all that appealing (artwize) until i saw the trailer on HD. Now i'm in love with what they've been doing to it. Though i'm not sure i want the same kind of smart ass cheesy protagonist here that i loved in uncharted. But this is a game that i'm dying to play.
Though being poor and PS3 games being THIS expensive on mexico, i'm not sure which of the many games i want i'm gonna play this year and wich ones i'm gonna wait for to get cheaper. I think i'm buyinh little big plannet first, and if it comes here this year in mexico, the GHWT bundle and wait for next year for this, rockband, bioshock and other stuff.
Someone who wants to addopt me and buy me stuff?

"To explore the whole new world...."
Ok, the player just goes through some damn tunnel, what world is there to explore????? The cities!!!!
Somehow, this sounded more like Assasin Creed, and that one was more aplying!!!!

@Jonn: no, actually, that wasn't sarcasm. That's generally what I think of this game. Take Assassin's Creed, replace the horse with your partner, move the graphics around and BAM! Prince of Persia.

Actually, the way he describes the map layout DOES sound frighteningly similar to how the Assassin's Creed world was set up.
But that doesn't mean it has to suck, because what sank Assassin's Creed wasn't so much the world layout as it was the missions and the actual level design. Frankly, I just hope that the "open world" concept they're fiddling with doesn't break the platform elements that made the old games so good. But from what I heard their major idea of "open world" in this game means that you can choose different paths that are all pretty much linear in themselves. A relief to me, actually. Not every game HAS to be GTA.

Great to see a PS3 in interview/dev diary footage for a change.
The game looks better and better. Btw, I don't think you an run on the ceiling forever, as that would be boring being able to do it ALL the time. Being able to ceiling hang time for say 3 seconds could make for interesting platforming.

@Clamchop: Yeah i didnt like the voice acting and thought it sounded exactly like the guy from Uncharted. Apparently it is him which is a little jarring and im really not down with drake being the prince but we'll see.

@furianboy:
To be honest. Yeah, I agree with you completely.
I -was- looking forward to this until I saw this dev diary. Now I'm thinking it's going to be the same crap as Assassin's Creed: It'll be pretty, and it'll be fun for about 1/3rd of the game before the novelty wears off.
But we'll see, I'll still wait for the reviews.

@GARlock:
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.
Speaking of Yahtzee, this video only confirms his belief that this game suffers from a hefty dose of Final Fantasy. While they only admit to the combat style as being FF-inspired, I think we all know they took a little bit more from advent chldren than just the sword play.

Last Prince of Persia I played, the protagonist was still a normal human being... no Alien-like skills whatsoever.
But the game looks fun nevertheless.

I'm really hoping that the PC version of this one is handled much better than the last PoP game, which ranks in my top 5 worst PC ports of all time. They only way it should have been sold as a PC title is if it came bundled with a 360 controller, because they obviously couldn't be bothered with anything keyboard and mouse related.
Assuming that Team Kotaku will be speaking to them at PAX, I'd genuinely be interested in hearing weather or not proper attention has been given to the PC control scheme this time around, or if we should just purchase it for the 360 since that's how they intend it to be played.

Maybe they'll be bringing back the banter from sands of time? That amused me as I was going through the puzzles a lot, and it's what stuck with me about the game. That, and the story. This all looks impressive but looks don't keep me interested in a game these days..I demand great gameplay and story! To hell with shiny fighting!
okay I'm going to stop having caffeine at 10 at night now.

Everything looks awesome!! (except the ceiling run... that looks a bit streched)
I was a bit worried at first with the whole "this isn't the Prince we all know!! It's a new one!! Like in a parallel dimension where other things happened! but looks promising
BTW, look this Prince Of Persia video:
