New PS2 Models Hitting US Stores
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on August 27, 2008
Multiple readers across North America have emailed to inform us that the new, slightly smaller, AC adapter-less PlayStation 2 systems are hitting U.S. retail outlets this week. Reader Schpadoinkle666 works at Walmart (we're sorry) and sends us a picture of the new package, while a guy named Creighton sends word that he found one in his local Fry's Electronics yesterday.
I was browsing the local Fry's Electronics on Monday and saw that they had the 90000 series PS2s in stock for $US 129. The box was slightly smaller than the slims (reduced to $US 124); the definitive clue to me was that the description of the box contents mentioned an ac cord but omitted mention of an ac adapter.Lovely! Now if they'd just knock down that price another $US 30 I would buy one for every room in the house.

I would buy one in a heartbeat at 100 as well. I dont know what they are waiting for. The sales numbers could jump even higher.
I myself have an original and I want one to replace it since its been acting weird for years, plus my guitar hero guitars need to be used on something. I am not hassling with addons for the PS3.

This is great and all, Sony, but how about you ram that little guy up there into the back end of the PS3 (I'm sure you can find a big enough orifice) and give me my backwards compatibility back.
I will make a stand here. I still care about it.

@LedRush: I'll let you know. I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't own one at this point. My friends all have them and I've gotten by playing those up until this point. However, there is a great catalog of games for it. I love JRPGs and with Persona 4 coming out later this year, I'm going to need to get one at some point. I'd just wish they would bring it down to $100.

I bought the new red PS2 in Japan a few months ago, so I could go back and play some of the older games I missed out on. Coming from a someone who has an original launch PS2 back home, I appreciate the lighter size and lack AC brick. Should make packing it when I return home much easier.

@LedRush: Not everybody wants to constantly upgrade. Some people are happy with one console. This way you have a PS2 for cheap with hundreds and hundreds of games under $20, new games coming in cheaper than current gen games and when the console finally dies the games will be practically free.

This whole thing with Sony's PS2-PS3 keeps reminding me of Atari with the 2600-5200...although I'm not sure whether Atari was still making and revising the 2600 when they meant to move on to the successors.
Anyway...the PS2 won't die. It won't. It won't.

You know what's funny? A mere $30 is stopping some of you from buying a PS2. How many months or years have you been saying that now? You'd rather wait months to save $30 than to play the greatest library of games? Seriously? That's kind of sad. Real gamers you are not

@gold5225: s
I believe this model removes the Power brick and has it built-in to the Slim model itself. Thus there's no need for an AC adapter. Quite the improvement over the Slim for those like me that hate power bricks, but not really a huge improvement overall.
I don't think we'll see these drop to $99 until sales are very low, and that doesn't seem like it will happen for another year or two. Seriously, these things are selling great still. I almost wish my PS2 phatty died or something so I could have a reason to get one.

@Scott3D: Yep agreed.
@LedRush: There's a mainstream appeal to it given its diversity of its library. I'm sure the casual gaming crowd is going to take some time to get every "greatest hits" game completed. It's also a given that they're targeting a different consumer base with the PS2.
@y2julio: Might I suggest getting Shadow of the Colossus and the God of War games? SotC for the art style and the "ambience". God of War for the Wow factor. Some of the things done there still impress me to this day eventhough I'm supposed to be on the "next gen" consoles.
Don't mind the GoW haters. It's a very competent action game with just the right amount of puzzles thrown in. The story's not bad either.
It amazes me that the PS2 is still doing brisk business. That's what happens when you have a shitload of games that covers almost any genre...(Anyone know if it's got the Hentai crowd covered?)

When my first PS2 started scratching discs I made the mistake of replacing it with one bought at a pawn shop. It's only been months, I haven't used it that much, and it's already crapping out on me. Not to mention controller rumble doesn't work. So IF I replace it again I'd probably get this one. That's a big if because on one hand I still have a few PS2 games I want to finish, but on the other hand I never finished them because I hardly spend any time playing games anymore.

@Technogamer1992:
I agree. With Sony still manufacturing PS2s they should just plunk down a one time development cost to slim down the PS2 main components even more and form factor the PS2 "brain" into the PS3. This way they will get true backwards compatibility on proven technology.
I think part of the problem for Sony is that they are trying to be bleeding edge and brand their PS3 as having the best hardware in terms of power and HD entertainment, which it does, but they undercut their own message by tooting their horn about decade old technology.
Obviously Sony are still depending on the PS2 cash cow. I'm guessing that had the PS3 done better out of the blocks in terms of sales, the PS2 would probably be dead by now, or on life support at the very least.

My current near-launch PS2 is almost dead and I have no real need to venture into the current gen (with the exception of my Wii) until LBP starts calling. Some people have to be cutting edge, but I just want great games and I still have at least 50 of them that I need to play. It is not like the PS1 where the graphics were intolerable to me once I saw a PS2. The differences in graphics are significant, but also sort of negligible since the PS2 graphics have been good enough for me. I am still buying a ton of PS2, Xbox, and GameCube games. Personally, I am scared that my Xbox will die because there would be no way to play some of my games, even if I got a 360, which I am not planning on buying. When I see a used Xbox around here, like at a garage sale, I will probably buy it.
The only reason for me to get a current gen system is for online multiplayer, which was touted by Nintendo in all of their press conferences prior to the Wii launch and promptly tossed aside after that. Online co-op games are what may eventually make me cave in, but I need for at least one of my three gaming buddies to get a PS3 for that to happen.

"Lovely! Now if they'd just knock down that price another $30 I would buy one for every room in the house."
Agreed! It's certainly one of my favorite systems.

I still use mine as a dvd player; I'll get a ps3 when I get an HDTV; waiting til Feb. next year for the price of them to plummet with the digital switch. Fiance works for Best Buy too; cost +5% ;).
