Next City Of Update Brings Mission Creator, Day Jobs
Posted by Mike Fahey at 10:00 AM on August 27, 2008
Remember that user-created-content for City of Heroes and City of Villains that I got so excited about back in April? The innovative feature that allows players to create and share their own in-game missions is officially on its way in Issue 13: Architect. Players will be able to pick the map, location, villains, objective, and then write your own fiction for the mission, and your peers will be able to rate your creations, with rewards for the highest rated creations.
The update will also introduce offline progression in the form of day jobs. Players determine what they do when they aren't playing superhero by the location they log out from. Logging out from City Hall makes your character a City Official, while logging out in a Hospital grants you the Caregiver day job. Day jobs offer thematically appropriate rewards - City Officials gain influence, Caregivers gain health buffs - and once you've spent enough time on the job you'll earn badges that can be combined to unlock Accolades and increase the amount of rewards you rake in.
All this, plus two new power sets - Shields for the melee classes and Pain Domination for the villainous Corruptors and Masterminds. Hit the link for the full details on this truly epic update.

Usually this is the big overview and then they just break everything down from there. You want to know what the odd part is? A dev was quoted as saying they could have called it "i13: All your bases belong are us" because of the sheer massive amounts of the base changes that are coming and have been requested since i6 when bases hit and yet, there's no real mention of bases in that overview. At all.
If this is the big overview that has been the norm, this is far from the big issue of awesome that the devs have been saying is coming. Yes, the stuff mentioned is good/awesome, but it's still missing a really big part.

Offline progression you say...strange indeed! Must...not...log...on...must...get...further...in...offline...progression

Wow. It's incredible how much effort they put into CoH.
Really, these features would be incredible in any MMO.

I talked to one of the guys at Cryptic at the Fan Expo in Toronto this past weekend, and player created content was something he said that they wanted to push in their games more now. This was more in relation to their upcoming game, Champions Online, but he seemed to have a lot of good ideas of how to let players create their own stories and immerse themselves and their characters in the universes they build.
I stopped playing City of Heroes a long time ago, but since I left it's kept getting a lot better and keeps making me wonder if I should be my hero out of retirement.

Impressive how much they add for free.
Liked CoH but annoyed how hard it is to get the same mission as a friend. Always get offered different contacts and found it annoying.

City of Heroes will not be complete until you can work as a pizza delivery boy.

I saw this and for a second I thought it was something about Burnout Paradise, but I was wrong

I haven't played CoH for such a long time, but it seems with every issue, it gets better and better. Wish other MMO's were supported this well with free content... I may actually pick my account back up within the next month or so.

Tempting...

ya know matt, as a current subscriber, i was a little confused too, but the base stuff might be fleshed out later. usually these bullet point reveals indicate that its going to be a few months before it goes live. they then release a few more targeted teasers later that flesh out the features later. im assuming the bases stuff will get fleshed out later.
One big thing late next month is going to be the zombie apocolypse event, so i think if anyone wants to come back, check october, we are having a "halloween event" that is going to be a massive invasion of zombies in the different zones. Friends who played it in test server when they ran it said its amazing. so if you want back, check that.

SHIELDS.
Forget day jobs and making my own missions and all that other crap, I'm making a goddamn Shields/Willpower scrapper.

@WildKnightblazer: That's not how it works, sorry :(
Shields is a secondary for scrappers/brutes/stalkers and a primary for tanks. It's a defense set, that can only be used by right-handed power sets (So no Dual Blades/Shields, but BS, Katana, Martial Arts I think are ok.)

@Crippl3: Is it? I see...I was thinking shields in terms of Captain America and Goofy from Kingdom Hearts...but I guess it being defensive only, y'know, makes sense.
...You mean you'll be restricted from choosing it if you choose Dual Blades and maybe Katana (Katanas are left-handed)? That's something that hasn't been done before, as far as I know we've always been able to choose any combination of powersets available to the archetype...

Take a look at this letter from Positron posted on the forums about Issue 13, it does mention that the whole Architect name is because of both base and mission editors.
[boards.cityofheroes.com]
"...First off is the issue name, Architect. I liked the correlation that the name has between some of the improvements we are making to bases (in the way new things are purchased for them) and to our Mission Architect feature. Players can now be architects of their own story arcs that other players can play. When I first mentioned this system in the 4th Anniversary post, I had no idea how wildly popular that single concept would be. The thread that followed that post had a plethora of ideas of how such a system could, and should work from a player's perspective..."
It just seems they have not really gone into detail about bases.

Hrm. Kind of makes me wish I still played. Gotta figure out what to do with my 100+ hamidon enhancements rotting in a SG base vault somewhere, and 4 lvl 50 toons, all with issue ~4-6 builds

I have to say that's pretty cool. I used to play CoH, it's a good pick up and play mmo. Unfortunately the cave/office/science lab missions that looked the same got way too annoying. :P Looks like there's much improved though.

What do you get if you always log off on top of the tallest building? That's what I used to do.

So you can make missions and story arcs for other people to play. I'm assuming you can also make missions and just play them yourself? That would take the edge off the grind a little. There are some mission types or locations I just don't like to play.

@ludwigk: You will most likely have a bunch of free respecs available on your characters when you log in, they give those out like candy.
And Hami O's are all well and good, but inventions are where it is at these days.

I'm currently an addict/player of CoH/CoV and I'm so hyped for this new expansion. Not only does it satisfy the need for more content and customization... but it also allows people to tell THEIR characters stories. It really adds a whole new level of Role Playing that the game seriously lacked before (though it didn't stop the game from being fun for me). I can't wait to start making my missions for my Rock Crag and the other characters.

so, they will be rewarding players for NOT playing? I think the rest of the MMOs need to get in on that.

Okay yeah this sounds pretty great. CoH always had good patches but this sounds like something else.
@Amsterdaam: This IS other MMOs getting in on that. WoW started it with Rested XP.

Wow, it has to have been 2 years since I've played City of Villains, and now I suddenly want to reinstall it just to create new missions for others to play. Also, my preferred type was Corrupter, and Pain Domination seems to scratch me just where I itch.

When I saw this, not only did my jaw drop but we had to go to hospital to have it re-attached.
I haven't been playing heroes all that much recently but this is going to pull me right back in again. I (and I hope alot of other people just so I don't sound strange) have thought about my characters whilst playing and have come up with a storyline using my avatars.
However I'm going to hold my breath on the user created content. I'll only get excited once I sit down with the update loaded and running and have a chance to see how much of the content within the missions is actually user created. No release date just yet, it seems. Oh well.
