On the Road to PAX
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 AM on August 16, 2008
With less than two weeks before I need to get on the road to drive to Penny Arcade Expo, I figure now is probably the time to see if anyone is interested in joining me for a two day drive to Seattle and all things Penny Arcade. Unlike those hardcore trekkers partaking in the Cross Country Supertrip, my plan is to break the nearly 1,400 mile drive up with my wife and son over two days.
We plan to leave the Denver area the morning of August 27 and drive about halfway (which will put us somewhere in Idaho, likely near Heyburn). Then the next day we'll drive the rest of the way to Seattle. That's two 10 hour or so treks.
If anyone is interested in meeting up with us in their own vehicles drop me a line at editor at Kotaku dot com and we'll figure out which parking lots to meet in. I'd rather not detour from the drive, so if you're interested you'd probably have to meet up with us along the way.
I figure this year is a dry run. If things go well, and there's enough interest, next year I might try expanding it to a longer route and even see if we can throw together some sort of on-the-way pit stop with food and games. So I also need to know whether this sort of thing appeals to you at all or if it's just a really bad idea. Go crazy in comments.

I would actually take the time to drive over to Idaho but I only have Friday/Saturday and Sunday off. Sounds like you're going to be here on Thursday :/ So hey, just post an update on when you get here and dinner is on me.

I just drove from California to Illinois 2 weeks ago. 2,100 miles in 3 days. I'd join up and go to PAX, but i'm still sore from my drive East, and have no desire to attend PAX this year (other than Mr. Wheaton, last year was disappointing).
The drive through Wyoming will be beautiful, but watch out for SLC. There was a ton of construction going on when I went through there.
If you go through Wyoming in the morning, watch out for low flying birds. I was just driving along minding my own business when all of a sudden I saw something swoop up from the brush. My mind thought: "Is that a bird?" and suddenly I heard a . Yes, it was tragically funny, but it also chipped the paint.

Since I live in Seattle, I suppose the trip is out. :p
I'm not bringing my daughter to PAX this year, but maybe next year. If you want some recommendations on where to eat and all that, lemme know. I can point you to some nice places, some cheap places, some middle-of-the-road places.

Can't join in on a wild ride, but is there going to be any kind of official Kotaku meet-up at PAX itself? I can't wait for it!

Could turn into a cool annual "gumball rally"-esque trek to pax. I wont be partaking tho, flying directly to Sea-Tac on the 23rd.

I think we all know how these sorts of trips end.
Brian gets dysentery.
You'll lose two bison attempting to ford the North Skunk river crossing.
And just before you reach PAX you'll all drown to death attempting to river raft your caravan of cars the rest of the way.
That said, I'll take a plane and meet you in Seattle.

Unfortunately I cannot join you. To do so I'd have to cross a large expanse of water known as "The Sea".

Or... rather.... what am I doing in yours?

Hey Crecente! Looks like you'll be passing through my neck of the woods on your way to Seattle. I'll have to warn you though, there's a lot of construction on I-80 starting east of Rock Springs, Wyo. and continues between Rock Springs and Green River. There isn't a detour around it and depending on the day and time you pass through, traffic could get slow or even stop for a couple of minutes.

If you make it to Seattle and get checked in on time you could join us for the Pre-PAX dinner. About 120-140 PAX forum regulars eating delicious catered Italian food and enjoying games and such. It is an all ages event with no alcohol being served (insurance laws).
You won't be the only "famous" person there either. Chris Taylor, Kim Swift and some other people from Valve should be in attendance as well.
All the rest of the info you need is in the first post of this thread:

@Vecha: I think that's why he's planning it on separate cars. Much safer plus privacy for the kid and wife.
Shame I live in a different country, otherwise I'd be there!
Seems there's a lot of
a)people that are waiting for the East coast PAX trip.
b)Already nearer than the drive.
c)No intention of going to PAX.
Would be nice if this clicked though. I can imagine the pit stop would be legendary!
Vids Brian ok? We want to see how crazy things go...

@balls187 upside yo head: Most of the forum regulars are well aware of the distasteful smell of a gaming convention, and will have showered/deodorized before the dinner. Should point out that you have to pre-register for the dinner by the 22nd, you can't get tickets at the door.

@Nezacant: This is what I keep saying, but every time I do, people tend to try and shoot me down, calling us east-coasters "greedy", and how we always get what we want. Total bullshit.
Just because I make a mention about how it would be fair to at least have a few instances of great gaming conventions to appear on the east coast doesn't mean we should be treated badly because of a wish, whether it may be for one or for many, it is still a wish to have it come true one day.
Yeah, were getting PAX in 2010, which will be awesome when it happens, but for those who just don't have the money to travel out to the west coast to visit the best conventions, all we can do is wish. And if anyone has an issue with that, you're problem, not ours. For us gamers, you don't know how shitty it is to want to be a part of a great experience, at least for once in our lifetime.

I'm still considering joining you and going all the way from Colorado. Though, I still don't have tickets or a hotel room set up, and the guy I'd be going with has classes at CU which start the day after the show ends.
I'm thinking I'm gonna have to sit it out this year, but please let us know how it goes so I know whether or not to buy a plane ticket for next year or if we're gonna drive up again, sounds like it could be a lot of fun.
