PAL PlayStation Store Update: Squat. SQUAT!
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 8, 2008
Well would you get a load of this. A PAL PlayStation Store update with nothing in it? Incredible. Insulting. Disappointing. Predictable. Take your pick of any of those. There are five items available today, Europe. Five. And that's across both stores, PS3 and PSP. Surely this is the lowest moment yet for a weekly ritual that prides itself on low moments.
PS3 store
Guitar Hero III: Interscope Track Pack
Civilisation Revolution - Wonders & Artefact Pack #1: The Mythic
Dead Space - Loved Ones Trailer
PSP Store
Secret Agent Clank Demo

Don't download it all at once, Europe, or you'll have nothing left to do until...Saturday.

@Amazon_Chris: I couldn't agree more. I think if it wasn't for the fact we can sign up to the stores from other regions there'd be a lot of upset PAL PS3 owners. Most of the demos and videos I've downloaded come from the US or Japanese store. I had to use Entropay to buy 1942 Joint Strike from the US store as that's still hasn't come out here yet either.

Holy crap. Sony needs to get their act with the EU PSN Store together. Quite frankly, the amount of suppor they give that store is embarrassing.

So for next week is Driver going to be for PAL or will it be the usual lackluster of an update?

It is a shame we get everything late, and I mean REALLY late.
Then when we DO get something good in our store, it's the ONLY good thing to buy, and even then its usually pretty expensive (eg Tekken (Online), GT, Siren: Blodd Curse)
Our store just SUCKS, they should just have ONE store thats updated every thursday as per usual; but for each region is shown in a that region specific language. (Would it REALLY hurt them all that much to put in ONE more language option for japanese in the PSN games?)

I read earlier that SCEE is basing Home invitations on the users activity on the Playstation store.
They could at least give us a reason to go.
Still, there's a PSP demo there so I'm sure there's been worse weeks.

Thanks Luke...
I posted that Kotaku have stopped posting about PAL updates... & then you make me proud...
Also insulting is the fact there is no demos still for Elefunk, Super Puzzle Fighter, Toy Home, PixelJunk Racers & Monsters, Siren & more (we are expected to buy blind)
Also insulting Elefunk is $5 in USA £5 in UK (nearly $10!) also with no demo....
No 1942 joint strike yet, even though I have had it on 360 for a month...
Still no announcement on what we in the UK are getting for pre-ordering LPB (a game being made in the UK)
SHAME SCEE SHAME!!
(& if David Reeves has had a lot of phonecalls/email last few weeks its down to me posting his details in Sony forums - a small victory)

The thing that gets me is that no games journalist ever calls Sony (or Nintendo for that matter) on this kind of carry on. The most you ever see is a one line question followed by the usual empty platitudes about how important Europe is to them and how things will change. The kinds of David Reeve are never truly grilled on why European gamers are treated so shabily.

@ThursdayNext: Oh, if you're actually asking how we sign up with the other stores it's pretty easy. In the PS3 menus you can just create a new account and the region and address details you give it determines which store the account is associated with. Once created you can just switch between them at will.
MattB

Posted 10:21 PM 8/8/08
@ThursdayNext: I used "Entropay". If you google for that term the first hit will let you see how I'm buying from the US store. I know I'm being a little vague here, but they're a company and I'm trying to avoid shilling. I'm certainly not affiliated with them in any way. There's bound to be other alternatives too, but I'm not aware of them.
We can buy of the Japanese store as well, but that requires importing Sony's prepaid Japanese PSN cards.

Why don't you complain about the horrendous Singstore updates the US has had?
At least the UK updates have better content. The US update has been canceled this week, and usually consist of DJ Bobo and other no name artists.

@Mr.Monkey: They got it several hours earlier than the NA store...Though it was quite funny reading the the PS3 blog posts with people bitching about not getting until later that day. Though thats due to a lack of telling people around what times they can expect updates in the store. Which then leads ton of angry gamers...

I don't understand why the European PSN Store doesn't have the same layout as the US version. It's so much harder to find stuff. And why are we missing demos whilst still offering the full games for sale, what's with that? It's kinda ridiculous that we have to make US PSN accounts just to try these games to see if they're worth buying.
They should just have one store translated into different languages and then filter out specific content as and when required (due to stupid licensing issues or whatever). There's no valid reason for having things as they are now.

@forcefullpower: I have a dreamcast, xbox 1, ps2, wii, 360 & PS3 all sat under my television, 27 years old and have attempted a degree in Games Design, So when I speak about how badly SCEE has treated us it is with informed views based on 1st hand knowledge...
My posts here (and other places) are a little bit of fun, I am in bed with the flu... but I assure you when I deal with representatives of SCEE regarding things that I have posted about it is with far more tact and in a constructive & consise manner...

@s0njas0n: You say you don't understand why the EU store gets screwed, so I'll tell you.
SCEE don't have to try. The EU is Sony's territory, plain and simple. The love for the Playstation brand is strong here, to the point that in most EU countries they use the noun "Playstation" to mean "Games Console", even if they are talking about an Xbox, etc.
So when you have a consumer base (people such as forcefullpower) that will buy even when treated shabbily, and moreso will defend Sony to the hilt even while still getting shafted, it's easier to sit still than invest to improve.
Microsoft, on the other hand, are fighting to win over the EU consumer, which is why they treat them a whole lot better than Sony or Nintendo ever has.
