Penny Arcade Expo Sched Hits
Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on August 12, 2008
The official schedule for Penny Arcade Expo hit the PAX forums over the weekend. The fairly chunky schedule includes a nice cross-section of the gaming industry and the folks who cover it.
Some of the highlights I noticed, from my quick perusal, includes:
Ken Levine's keynote
EndWar, Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Dawn of War, This is Vegas, Dragon Age and Spore presentations
The Growing Role of Women in the Industry
Game Criticism and Old Game Journalism
The Art of the Dungeon Master
History of Harmonix
Family Feud PAX Edition
The Wil Wheaton Panel
GamerDad's Gaming With Children
Of course you've also got live music, movie screenings, the tourneys and a chance to see Tycho and Gabe create a strip live. Sounds like a fun time. Who's planning on going?

Already got my tickets. I hope Blizzard has some playable SC2 or Diablo3!

Looking forward to PAX weekend. This schedule looks pretty well rounded, can't wait to be a part of it soon.

Considering that the Raleigh, Cary, Durham area of North Carolina is becoming an epicenter of Game Development, some sort of East Coast con would make total sense. We've got Epic Games, Red Storm, and we'll soon have Insomniac.
I for one am very happy to hear that PAX will be on the East Coast soon. Although, I'm pretty sure it will be held somewhere far away from me, like New York. Sigh...

@Mommar: *AHEM*
Let me rephrase.
"It would be much more convenient if, sometime, in the near future, that some of the many known gaming conventions, for once, can change their choice of venue closer to the east coast."
Yes, we have some independent gaming conventions out here, but nothing to the magnitude of some of the conventions located on the wast coast.
Also, I could swear that New Mexico was located closer to the west coast than New York. If not, then silly me.

@xAnarChisTx:
I'd also like to add that any and all conventions based on video games on the East coast tend to suck absolutely.
Just take a look at the absolute fail that is the Festival Arcadia in Montreal.

@mommar i know its not the center of the world but we've got plenty of big cities who the hell made california king of the world i just think its bs. what are you talking about new mexico they could easily go to the conventions if they wanted?

"The Art of the Dungeon Master"
Thats easy.
1. Get a fancy Dungeon Master screen with lots of cheat sheet tables on it.
2. Beg barrow and steal anything and everything.
3. Make it all up as you go..including rules.
4. If a player gets snotty, shake a bunch of dice in both hands with an raised eyebrow.
5. Always include STD infected Orc whores IN EVERYTHING.
6. Make gaming magic.

Despite your feeling the East Coast isn't the center of the world. Learn to do without, that's what everybody in New Mexico does all of the time.

@Mommar: Not just talking about PAX. Talking about everything else. E3, GDC, Blizzcon, etc.
Yeah, I know for the most part that most companies are located on or near the west coast, but come on, give the east coast some love!

it still is bs that nothing happens on the east coast whats the reason for just starting conventions here in 09 or 10 what took them so long?

Ok, why the hell can't they hold any of these conventions out on the east coast? Total BS.
I think us east-coasters need to sign a petition or something.

@Mommar: Sucks to be you then, I guess.
@Doomstink: Really? I didn't know that Raleigh was a sort of an epicenter of game development. I was working in Raleigh for 4 months for network administration, and didn't know that they have a IGDA Chapter located there. I should have gone to it, seeing how I am a member.

I'll be at PAX. I guarantee that. It does help that I live less than 30 miles away from Seattle, but I plan on going to the East coast PAX as well once that starts up. I want to keep supporting Penny-Arcade any way that I can.

@Anarchist_Gamer: Here's all the grad school orientation you need:
1) Wear a bike helmet. Sure, they look nerdy but you're a grad student fer chrissakes. Better get used to it.
2) Don't show up to the very first freshman party or you'll forever be known as, "that creepy grad student".
3) When holding office hours for problem sets, just solving the problem right in front of the undergrad doesn't help them learn all that much, but is very much appreciated.
That covers most of it. Now get your brainy ass to PAX!

@xAnarChisTx: $400 round trip to somewhere like LA or San Diego by Air. And a drive that is way too long to either of those places (plus ridiculous gas prices.) Seattle is actually harder to get to, more expensive to fly to, even longer to drive. Regardless, you guys get plenty of awesome perks where you live in other forms that a lot of other states do not get. Some of us have to travel for pretty much everything. Whining you don't get one thing out of a million seems petty. I'm simply reminding you that you can't get everything you want, you just don't realize it because you usually get everything.
The Tech sector is mostly on the West Coast therefore it's easiest for everyone to remain in that area. Just an unfortunate occurrence. Traveling gets old... as I pointed out, I have to do it for everything I like.

While I would like to see some East Coast action, all I want for the west coast events is better tv coverage....
PAX East Coast would be great in FL. The Orange County (Orlando) Convention Center is a great place for it.

@Doomstink:
As a NC resident, I wouldn't call the Triangle an "epicenter" just yet. 3 studios doesn't really qualify when compared to the Seattle, Boston, LA, or DC areas.

It's important to remember what makes PAX special and more unique than other gaming conventions: PAX is for gamers. Press is still there, but all of the panels and events are designed by gamers for the gaming community.

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend PAX and will be across the city rocking. I recommend all to check out this for other entertainment options when putting together their Seattle schedule.

I'm interested in Endwar as little has been said compared to other October releases. Also sad to see "The Agency" isn't on the list.

@Struct09: Funny thing is, Harmonix is based in Boston, last I checked.
So why is it that they pretty much never go to East coast video game events/shows/whatever?
Very very simple.
If it didn't happen on the West Coast and it's in North America, it never happened. Sad truth that we all have to live with for now.
