Pirates Vs. Ninja Dodgeball Coming To Wii
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on August 29, 2008
I always knew the age-old conflict between pirates and ninja was too large to be contained by one console. Today Gamecock announces that Blazing Lizards' Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, coming out next week on Xbox Live Arcade, will also be getting a full retail release on the Nintendo Wii later this winter. Players will be able to face off in the dodgeball arena, showing their support for their favourite faction - pirates, ninjas, robots, zombies, and three unannounced teams, which I am guessing are monkeys, samurai, and Argentina.
The Wii version of the game will feature several customised control schemes, as well as all-new story and challenge modes to make the game worth of retail release. Hit the jump for the full press release, along with two more screens worth of hot pirate vs. ninja Wii action.

BLAZING LIZARD'S PIRATES VS. NINJAS™ DODGEBALL ABOUT TO BE UNLEASHED ON Wii™
Intense Dodgeball Rivalry to be Settled on Wii Courts Everywhere This Winter
Cockpit, Austin, TX - August 28, 2007 - Gamecock Media Group announced today that Blazing Lizard's Pirates vs. Ninjas™ Dodgeball will release on Wii™ this winter. The title features two ancient rivals, ninjas and pirates, along with several other teams, all looking to settle the score once and for all - on the dodgeball court.
"The competition between the Pirates and the Ninjas is so huge that battles are breaking out all over," said Harry Miller, El Presidente of Gamecock Media Group. "We're happy to bring this grand conflict to the Wii, and give players the chance to help determine who the ultimate champions are."
Pirates vs. Ninjas™ Dodgeball will have scurvy thieves squaring off against crafty martial artists in large, detailed arenas. The game allows for up to eight players and offers a total of seven teams, including pirates, ninjas, robots and zombies plus three unannounced ball slingers. Each team utilizes its own unique techniques and strategies to try and ultimately defeat the enemies. Unique to Wii version, the game will offer all-new story and challenge modes, along with several customised control schemes.
Pirates vs. Ninjas™ Dodgeball is scheduled for release this winter. For more information visit www.gamecockmedia.com and www.piratesvsninjas.com.

@Modus_Operandi: I can understand that feeling we get as gamers but I guess I'm even skeptical of that these days because it's something that's based on image and it's to easily controlled by media. Case in point, Gamecock also published Hail to the Chimp and is also publishing Legendary (, the Box) and the first case it was picked up by the press as a wacky looking game... crazy stupid fun was the impression I got from the "impressions" out there but ultimately didn't seem like the kind of game I was willing to buy and play after more solid information came out after the games release. In the same right, Legendary was presented as a steaming hot turd on announcement by the media though I was kind of digging the idea (apparently they hated the name). It went dark and resurfaced with a new name and more time in the cooker but basically the same game and it's beginning to seem like a media darling. Now who knows what way the media will flop in the coming weeks but I've learned that I have to manage my own expectations and just wait for more solid information rather then souring myself on potential fun based on someone else's opinion.
It really just comes down to personal preference but I recommend you turn off your feelers or at least turn down the sensitivities until you get more concrete information as a lot of the stuff out there is just off. Way off usually. Then again, this is probably me being over-cautious due to my inability to manage my expectations in the past and being burned because of it :(
...I'm damaged goods :( *cries*

Has anyone ever played the old PS game called "Poy Poy" ? It was a 4 player cut throat version of "dodge ball". But instead of dodge ball you push and shove "objects" on the playing field, such as boulders and stuff and they would travel at different speeds. The characters were all different in stats (speed, power) and you could equip them with specials.
Wish someone would bring that back...we used to have bit tourneys with that game. Agh the simple days of gaming.

@SpiralJacobs: Pirates vs Ninja has also been latched onto by non-internet people, which is what makes this oh so the more lame. It's become one of those safe memes that are no longer underground but still seen as quirky, and thus sell to college freshmen and people that manufacture personalities out of pop culture icons. For me, the whole Pirates vs Ninjas thing is sooo 2000. Robots vs Zombies is even older. What's next, another goddamn Chuck Norris reference?
Is Super Dodgeball availible on VC? It's the only game for VC that I'd want to buy of software I already own, but only if it allowed for 4 players.

Gamecock has a track record of thinking they're hilarious, and thinking that that humor is enough to make their games good.
It isn't, and Gamecock has got to realize it before I'm going to have any respect for them at all.
When I try to guess what they look like, I see a bunch of high school students with minimal knowledge of game design, drawing penises on everything and endlessly quoting old internet memes, laughing every single time.

I was interested when I assumed it was going to be a Wiiware game. Lost interest when I realized it would cost $50.

@JuiceKup: It's weird how shovelware (assumption at that) coming to the Wii is the fault of the console, and automatically qualifies all 20m+ console owners as idiots/commoners/non-gamers or dolts as you put it, but shovelware on the 360 or PS3 is just the fault of the developers.
Cmon people... say no to gamer elitism

The whole Pirates vs. Ninjas thing seems lame. I like both, though, can't help that. It's sort of like Steampunk to me - something internet nerds have latched onto, and beaten into sad, unfunny cliche.
Also see The Cake is a Lie for another example.

Other than that, and on-topic, I don't think I'll get it for either console.

Just a feeling. The game doesnt sound awesome in and of itself. Theyre trying to sell something using an outdated internet meme. That itself raises an eyebrow.
This isnt a new Superdodge Ball. Thats already been done.

An XBLA game... coming to the Wii? Wow Wii (hehe), can you like, do something besides being a gamecube with gimmicks? I guess you do what sells, even if you're selling to dolts.
P.S. Does that mean we can get it the other way? Can we have Mario on XBLA? Or does it not work like that?

I'd much rather just play the boat stage in castle crashers again. You get to fight Ninjas that just so happen to actually BE pirates as well. Its great.

Ok, apologies to anyone I may have offended directing this at a game of pirates and ninjas... that rules. Don't get me wrong. But I'm just saying, that I wish Nintendo had some standards with their games. I mean, THEY HAVE NO STANDARDS. Look it up, there are qualifications for games to be put on Xbox and PS, but NOT NINTENDO. Which means that they can just use a steaming pile of old Ren & Stimpy game from the NES, slap a new cover on it, call it a Wii game, and charge $50 for it. Is that fair to the parents buying these games who don't know any better? The answer is no.

@denki: Yeah, you're right. It does make it that much more distasteful.
Gamecock is annoying as hell. Talk about low-hanging fruit here. They aren't funny, and they're not rock stars, so they should stop running around trying to be funny wearing stupid masks. Here's a really crazy idea - how about they produce a good game? I know, that's crazy talk, but it might help them, credibility-wise.

@CockroachMan: Also, it's a lot cheaper to develop a Wii game than a PS3/360 game.. that's why those consoles have less shovelware..

CockroachMan
Posted 2:46 AM 29/8/08
@JuiceKup: You know.. there's a lot of bad games on PS3 and 360 too.. actually, a lot of Wii shovelware are just PS2 ports. Those kind of stuff is going to the Wii not because Nintendo has no quality control, they're going there cause it's the best selling system and everyone wants to get something from that!
MS and Sony would certainly allow any current Wii game to be in their consoles if the game publisher wanted that :P

@JuiceKup:
The key sentence in that post is "Is that fair to the parents buying these games who don't know any better?". If they dont know any better than its their fault, not Nintendo's. There are plenty of good games for the Wii. There's also crap. That goes for every other form of media in the universe. If you dont want to be disapointed you become a smart shopper.

I assure you the game is NOT going to cost $50.
To all you haters out there:
Please, at least, give the game a chance before casting it into the depths of Hades. I'm most definitely biased but I do think the game is a really fun party game for XBLA (and now for Wii). And if you hate Pirates and/or Ninjas you can always choose Zombies, Robots, and... (yes there are quite a few teams left that have gone unannounced.
