PS3 Firmware 2.5 Brings... Screengrabs
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:40 PM on August 26, 2008
CVG say they've got first dibs on what the PS3's next firmware update will bring. After the excitement of trophies and in-game XMB, what treats could Sony have in store for us next? How about...Ctrl+PrtScn. Yes, the ability to capture screengrabs . Exciting, no? Shame this wasn't around before the in-game XMB, it would have made spotting those blurry, fake mock-ups that much easier.

This feature better work with the new chatpad. If not it's pretty much useless to those of us who don't have keyboards in their living rooms.

I understand that the screen grab will automatically print the screen out to the printers that everyone has connected to their PS3, too.

What they need to enable is a way to order your games alphabetically within the games column.
Seriously how hard is it?
I don't want my games in a folder, or by date in which I installed; give me alpha order damnit!

@noliferuin (PSN+XBL): I don't see why it would be different. Can't get much more simple than hitting the Print Scrn button on a keyboard. It'd be a lot better than fartin around with the PS button or something.
I checked the wireless keypad. No print screen button. Woulda made sense.

I have to go back to the shots of that Controller Keypad and see if I can spot Ctrl+Print Scrn buttons on it. That would simplify things. If not, I've always got my cheap-ass Cicero keyboard.

You are thinking "Alt+Print Screen", that captures the active window to Clipboard. "Ctrl+Print" Screen does the same thing as pressing "Print Screen", which captures the everything on the monitor to Clipboard.

Please stop posting about these firmware updates. It's to the point the next firmware will be like, "Fixed spelling of 'teh' to 'the'", and we'll still get a goddamn post about it. Half the shit they've patched have either broken the console for people or should have been in the thing from the start. Instead of giving us weekly updates on whatever firmware update Sony is rolling out, just compile them and give it to us every other month when the patch notes amount to more than 2 lines of text.

I would say the best part of this feature is taking a screen shot of the post game stats board of a multiplayer match you just dominated in. You know, something to show off to other friends who don't believe you when you went 30 kills without dying in a full COD4 match.

Wouldn't it be funny if MS responded with something like "ABILITY TO RECORD VIDEOS FROM YOUR 360!?!?!?! without need for capture card, although thats most likely impossible without tonnes of free processing power, although I'd be very impressed if that came out. For either one of the consoles. Heck even both.
Next generation will bring some intresting features more than graphics me thinks.

This is a pretty cool idea. I would love it if the PS3 automatically recorded everything for the past 10 minutes (or w/e) and let you access the video through the XMB. Then just hit Square at any point in the video to save a pic to your HDD.
Something like that would be nice.

Of course you could then go to your picture area push Triangle, select print from the drop down menu, and it will send the picture to whichever USB, network, 802.11, or Bluetooth printer that has been set to default under System/Printer Settings.
Why would you want to print a screen shot though?

I'm hoping that this firmware update might have a way to revive my Blu-Ray drive that mysteriously failed after updating to 2.42. Blu-rays dont even show up in the XMB but somehow DVDs still play. Since I've had it a month longer than the 12 month warranty, this might be the only hope I have of getting a working PS3 again without paying Sony $150 to service something their firmware most likely broke. I wish they would step up and cover issues clearly related to firmware updates. Any idea when this will be released on PSN?

I've had a user-made library on my PSP's firmware for a long time now to snap PNG screenshots instantly when I press the sound button.
It's surprising how easy it is - basically just make sure it loads the library. No issues ever with running out of RAM. Just the tricky one of what to set the screencap buttons as. Maybe L1 + L2 + PS on PS3 would work?
