PSP-2001 vs PSP-3000
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on August 22, 2008
Differences between the PSP-2001 (ie the PSP Slim) and the PSP-3000 (ie the new one) may not be as big as those between the Slim and the original, but damnit, there are still differences. Famitsu are the first to compare the new PSP model with its predecessor, and as you can see, the changes are fundamental! Innumerable! Look at those streamlined edges! We'll never be able to play our Slims again, what with the fear being crushed by its blunt, heavy edges. After the jump, a more effective comparison shot, this one showing the difference a new LCD screen can make.

Well the new screen looks like the only good thing going for the psp 3000.
Anybody know of a screen protector that can do the same thing ? Surely theres one out there.

I think it will be just like this since it's a hardware change that's already been made and is already being produced (hence the earlier spy shots). I don't think they changed anything that they initially said about Home or Life. It's just been heavily delayed to match their promises.

I wonder how doctored up the photos of the strawberries are? The difference is so significant I am doubtful and yet hopeful all at once. You know Sony tends to sell us on one thing and then change the plan on us. (HOME, Life with Playstation) <- yeah, I had to go there....

@XeroTrinity: This. I don't see why everybody is under the impression that Sony (or Nintendo, or Apple) are trying to squeeze more money out of existing customers.
Manufacturing processes change, parts cost less, improvements are cheaper and easier to implement without passing on cost to the consumer...
It's just a nice bonus for those who are late to the party. Don't blame the host just because you got to the party early and filled up on Doritos before they brought out the pizza.

Well I don't think they expect Slim owners to upgrade. This is simply to get new PSP owners. Believe it or not the PS1 and PS2 went through tons of different model revisions just like this, many improving the CD drive and such. It just happened during a time when gaming blogs weren't around and thus wasn't popularized. SKU revisions are hardly a new thing.

Great... Now they just need to move the power LED's so they aren't always hidden by your thumb if you're actually playing the darn thing. Admittedly, I've only run out of power once, but it would have been nice to have some warning about it ahead of time. (I've heard the lights blink... not that anybody has probably ever seen that. I don't think it's possible to hold and play the PSP comfortably in any position where your thumb isn't right over the power lights.)

What they need to do is fix that stupid Hold switch. Would it have been so hard to move it away from the On/Off switch? Taking off hold sometimes forces it to go through and turn itself off. Bad design concept there.

The game developers were only going to do it on once condition, eliminate homebrew because they're not making any money. The 3000 is the homebrew killer. It's frustrated how this generation is flooded with different kinds of consoles and handhelds. Right when you think you have the most up-to-date handheld or console, they (namely MS and Sony) release another console.
I miss the days of competitors releasing one console per generation.

Not really worth it for those who have the 2000s, since the new features are things the 2000s have, just not out of the box. New screens are always going to come along on the portable front. Look at the Game Boy Advance to Game Boy Advance SP. Look at the Original DS to DS Lite. It's just expected over time. As for those going from the 1000... this doesn't look bad at all.

I put forth the suggestion that the PSP-3000 isn't necessarily targeted at existing PSP owners so much as it's an attempt to coerce a potentially DS weary public into purchasing the unit.
To a portable gaming nut like myself a significantly improved screen is a pretty major upgrade (looking affectionately at my GBA SP+) and is reason enough to take the plunge. But folks like me are a minority.
To most this is an incremental upgrade and as much a show of good faith from Sony that "yes, we do in fact care about this product". I expect that Sony is taking the iPod approach of gradual improvements/modifications and will continue to tinker with the system specs until the technical quality of the games plateaus and is in danger of becoming stale.
At that point we'll probably see new tech which amounts to a "PSP2", regardless of whether or not Sony insists on keeping the moniker "PSP".

Why does everyone say there needs to be 2 analog sticks on the PSP? The N64 had one, and it was an amazing system with great 3D games. Many games can be done with only one (i.e. God of War, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy), and really only shooters need two. And then, there's the Metroid Primes of the FPS genre, that can get by with one elegantly. Really, I just don't think two is necessary for the platform. I mean the DS has none.

I'm going to wait for the PSP-7000, which will have a built-in 360 degree projector and ventriloquist speakers that make you really feel like you're surrounded by Patapons.

I'm not too sure about this, but couldn't the bright colors been done on a software level? A firmware update to change the rendering of colors, or contrast settings etc.? I'm not a technical wiz, so I'm not too sure, but honestly, this simply feels a step-up on-line with GBA to GBA-SP, only in fact, not as dramatic a change (SP at least had a total change in structure, and the inclusion of backlight and a rechargeable battery were all good improvements).
However, the good news is that I could get a PSP-2001 for cheap now, maybe.

@RaepGoblin: dude... my down d-pad button is REALLY hammered... I have to litterally make an effort to press it in order for it to register... I can still play RPG's and such, but if I wanna play Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus... I'm pretty much shooting myself in the foot. :)
besides... i'm a REALLY big visual hound, and i've always disliked the ghosting of my fat. seeing the photos above makes me REALLY pursue getting a new psp.
I'll just stick with my psp-1k until people are able to hack the 3k :D!!

@Smorlock: I think its because of the types of games that are released for the system. A lot of home console style games like third person shooters are released on the PSP. Those are games that really need two sticks to control really well. If developers stopped trying to put home console style games on the PSP then the cries for two sticks wouldn't be so loud, but those types of games are the ones that sell.

@Smorlock:
Tru Dat!
It seems impossible to read a review for any kind of PSP shooter that doesn't berate the PSP for lacking a second analogue nub, and these tend to be the same reviewers who say Goldeneye and Metroid Prime are among the finest games ever made, both of which, they seem to forget, have single stick control.
Anyway, supposedly the screen has double the response time, so ghosting on stuff like Test Drive Unlimited should be a thing of the past. It's never been a game breaker, but the 2001 should really have had the better screen too. Mic is a good inclusion, what with Go! Messenger and the Skype and such, now all we need is that frickin' keyboard they should years ago!

I can't believe people are complaining about a mid-cycle hardware upgrade that isn't going to make the PSP more expensive. WTF?
Nintendo redesigns the DS, leading to a better product and everyone rejoices. Sony does the same and they're the evil, money grabbing corporation just out to make a buck? Hurf de hurf.
As for me, I'll get one of the 3001's and start using my old fatty for homebrew. Always wanted to play with that stuff.

Does Sony ever settle on one model? They're turning into Apple now; churning out new models too soon.
The DS only had one makeover... and it was worth the trade-up.

I upgraded to a slim and love it over the Fatty. I'm not upgrading again unless they add bluetooth, internal storage of 10GB or more, and/or a dual analog stick. But the must have is Bluetooth... C'mon Sony, where's the blue tooth!?? Would love to use my bluetooth headphones and maybe even a PS3 controller for when I want to stand up my PSP on the table and use it as the display for more comfortable gameplay.

@Delutece:
Actually, Sony is just releasing a new version. They aren't forcing you to upgrade or buy the PSP. It's you, who decides whether the features of the new version are what you want, not Sony.
If you buy based on needs, not wants, then maybe you'd realize there is nothing to the PSP-3000 that you actually need.
For that matter, if you already have an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3, regardless of what new model arrives on the shelf, it isn't your needs that frustrate your desire to own the latest model, it's your wants.
Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 offer a means to larger capacity HDDs. As for RRoD, it's only an irrational fear that the possibly an Xbox 360 may RRoD that would cause anyone to want a newer console, not need it.

I am happy with my slim. I would always enjoy a better screen, but I have no problems with the screens in either my slim or my phat PSP. The disk drive on the phat was dying, so I needed a replacement system and I knew that the slim was coming out about two months later. The improved d-pad and the loss of weight were both very significant to me because they were correcting what I felt were deficiencies in the original design. I have never felt that the screen was deficient, so I don't feel any compulsion to get this, but it is great for someone who has not yet made the leap.
@Smorlock:
Maybe you should play some games that use the dual analog controls and compare them to their counterparts on the PSP. Some games don't need them, but it is clear that many of them do. I think that the original justification for leaving them off was that they wanted developers to create all new games instead of ports, so we just end up getting broken ports. Star Wars: Battlefront II was one of my favorite console games of the past generation, but the controls on the PSP made it one of the biggest disappointments. Renegade Squadron was a definite improvement, but that is only if you decide to accept the fact that you aren't getting great FPS controls. I don't play a lot of FPSs and TPSs, but I don't think you will find many people that would rather play all games using the single analog method. Katamari was fun on the PSP, but the controls being mapped to the buttons rather than the analog stick made it a lot more painful to play than the console games.
You already know that the controls on the DS and the PSP are not comparable in the very same sense that controls on the Wii are not comparable to the PS3. I mean some games on the DS don't use any of the buttons or d-pad, just the touch screen, so do you expect the PSP to do the same thing? They are two different devices that are both brilliant at different things. I get more use out of either my DS or my PSP than all other systems combined. They are great complementary systems, but they have very little in common other than the fact that they are portable.
