R&C: Quest for Booty Is For Everybody
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:20 AM on August 7, 2008
Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty will be hitting PSN pretty soon. By now, you're all familiar with the details since its E3 announcement. A short but sweet extended expansion for Tools of Destruction for a low, low price of $US 15. I got a demo of it today, and while it's a PSN-only download game, don't expect the graphics to take a hit, in fact, expect to see some improvements.
It's a wonder how Insomniac finds the time to make Resistance 2 and sprinkle on a little Ratchet and Clank in the same year. But they did, and boy you really have to hand it to them. Sure Quest for Booty is a short game, around 4 to 5 hours, but it still looks as good as any other game out there. It uses the same engine as Tools of Destruction, which Insomniac knows like the back of their hand, and that allowed the team to add some new lighting and environmental effects for new areas of the game.
Something I didn't really love about the later Ratchet titles was the focus on weapons. I like more platform-y games. So I was excited to find out there is less emphasis on weapons this time and more placed on platforming and puzzle solving. Ratchet doesn't even start with a weapon; you have to wack stuff with your wrench early on until you find one.
The level I saw didn't showcase it, but the theme of the game is about pirates and swashbuckling, so that's pretty exciting. I mean, pirates are awesome, right?
The gameplay itself is straight-up Ratchet, though. If you know the series, you'll feel right at home. I was told Insomniac wanted to release this to get people to try Ratchet who didn't before and who are new to the series. How that translates into the overall difficulty of the game remains to be seen.
Also, there are no trophies in this game, at the time of launch anyway. There's nothing stopping them from adding them in down the road, however. No saved data info from Tools of Destruction will carry over into Quest for Booty, either. They wanted to make this a completely separate experience.
One little hint was dropped to me about the ending. I had asked if the storyline for Quest for Booty would carry over into the next Ratchet game. I was told you're going to have to beat the game and find out and that there may be something interesting. Don't take that as any kind of confirmation, though.

OMG Insomniac is so good, they can make TWO games at the same time! and one of them isn't even a full one!
that is fucking incredible, i think we should declare them gods of game development now

There's a good chance that this will be a day one purchase for me. I'd really like to play R&CF first, though.

cant wait for this, though i need to finish tools of destruction still >.<. Whats awesome is how big the game is. 4 to 5 hours of gameplay for 15 bucks? heavenly sword was what 5 to 6 and cost 60?
It's games like this that's really going to set the PSN apart from XBLA as far as game offerings are concerned.

I did notice the enhanced graphics from the trailer I downloaded on the PSN, and they're quite impressive. Visually, the game is perfect--I really do not see how the graphics could be any better for this type of game.
I can't wait for this to come out. I'm counting the weeks--2 more after this one.

I rented Tools of Destruction a couple weeks ago to see if I wanted to get this in the end. I decided against it. I kind of did the same thing with Going Commando. I played for awhile, and then got bored and just wanted to go play Prince of Persia or Uncharted (which I'm actually doing now of course). I played through Super Mario Galaxy, but I could only get myself to do the 60 star minimum, and usually only about 20 stars at a time or so. I just get bored from this style of platformers, so bleh. I'll probably end up passing on it, and just work on a Platinum in Uncharted instead, lol.

I only just played through ToD so I'm looking forward to this quite a bit. I completely agree that the weapon focus detracted from the platforming in some of the later games, but they seem to have gotten back on track with the PS3 ones. Even if some of the weapons were a bit unbalanced.
Still, great fun, I eargerly anticipate this :-)

That sounds awesome. I too prefer platforming to shooting, and I thought the series got heavier with the guns as it progressed. I liked how in the first two games you could take out most non-bosses with just the wrench.

Tools of Destruction was the first R&C I played since the original and I was blown away by the graphics and silky smooth controls. It'll be interesting to see just how they made it better.
4-5 hours for $15 isn't too bad, I suppose, at least compared to something like Heavenly Sword.

That's where we part ways. I think Deadlocked may actually have ended up being my favorite entry in the series b/c it was nothing but over-the-top exploding of creatures and things, although I did miss some of the exploration elements from previous titles.
Still, I'm looking forward to this one. Tools of Destruction was probably the main reason I bought the PS3 when I did (instead of waiting for a more robust lineup).

@wanion: Deadlocked is still one of my favorite games. I loved the online play. The weapons are top notch. As for price $15 is not too much its high quality gaming,. If you pay $15 for crappy Braid you can do it for Quest For Booty

Hmm, so will this remain download-only, or wind up on Blu-Ray? I'd rather get my games on disc medium than take up tons of hard drive space, and if it's coming out on disc I'll wait rather than getting it right away on PSN.

I'm a new fan of R&C (ToD was my first and only beat recently) and to anyone wondering if it's good, it's great, and buying Quest for Booty is the best way to take a chance on it. I'm looking forward to it.
I actually thought the weapons in R&C are the main thing that stands out in R&C, I love the crazy weapons. Some of the platforming can be frustrating I think. But I feel that way about all platformers.

i see a R&C game of the year edition on the way, you know how they always re-release just before christmas with exstra content on disk... well maybe itl just be a gold edition since they where beaten out by that overwait plumber whos a bit to smug for his own games lineup, this still is the only none naff game i am able to sell instore to kids for the PS3, now if only they would port secret agent clank to PS2 that would be sweet

@luir: Considering Resistance 2 is going to be a AAA game and came much sooner than people expected, and Quest for Booty is just a shorter version of a fully realized game, and Insomniac is just a smaller dev company, it is impressive. What's your problem with them anyways? Jealous they don't make these games for your 360?

Heh, I can just see them taking the Valve route. First one episode as an addition, then next thing you know, Resistance 2 comes with Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, and the newest episode, no matter if you own any of them so far. Worry not, for gamers are social with many a friend to share their experience with!
Coincidentally, I still have a HL2 gift.
