Resistance 2, Hold On To Those Resistance Saves
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 6:20 AM on August 7, 2008
While I didn't attend E3 - I was hanging out in Kotaku Tower with Luke working the night shift - I did get to see the presentation of Resistance 2 just like everyone else. But since I didn't get to see the game in person, I had to make due by viewing screenshots and somewhat muddy-looking movies on my computer. At the time, I wasn't too impressed with the game from a graphical standpoint. I mean, it looked great, but after sitting down on a nice couch in front of a big-arse TV, I can say with confidence that, yes, Resistance 2 does look amazing.
Insomiac's James Stevenson gave me a run-through of the Resistance 2 demo from E3.
I wasn't surprised when I first saw the leviathan trouncing its way through the flooded streets of Chicago like I was during E3. I knew he was coming. But I was able to see just how much detail is actually on the leviathan model itself and how much intricate detail was going on in the animations on its face. They'll be focusing more on larger bosses this time around, Stevenson told me, so I expect to see many more "wow" moments like this
I was told there would also be a lot more effects added to the final game, too. This will be most noticeable during the sequence where Nathan is running up the stairs in the building with the leviathan peering in at him. All the while the building will be on fire and smoke will be billowing about.
One section that still leaves me troubled is when Nathan is crossing the scaffolding between buildings. After seeing Mirror's Edge and how careful you have to be crossing smaller platforms, it left me a bit disappointed you can blindly run through that with out any worry of plummeting to your death.
Not only do the enemies animate well (thanks in part due to them all being motion-captured), but they also travel in groups and will try to flank you. Luckily, the new Magnum in the game allows you to shoot your bullets into objects and detonate them like a remote bomb. This looks like it will be useful for slower enemies, but for larger, faster groups, I'd stick with the good 'ol machine gun.
I asked if players should bother keep their Resistance 1 save file on their PS3 in the event they'll receive a carry over bonus like in the Ratchet & Clank games. While James wouldn't confirm anything, he said there might be something, such as a medal. So it sounds like you should hold off on deleting your old save for a little while longer just in case.

@excel_excel: What a great idea. I'm going to go jump in my freezer now. I'm not too worried about waking up 500 years from now because I am confident that ebay will still be around and I can just buy resistance 2 off that. But then again, I might have to worry about that whole rapid aging thing. Oh well.

I have alomost everything done on Resistance . Beat it on Super Human, got almost all intels. But I'm only one rank off of Supreme Comander Online. I think I'm going to get that rank after I finish getting all my Uncharted trophies. Revisiting is fun.

@excel_excel: It may be 500 years before they figure out how to UNFREEZE someone without killing them.
In any case... Resistance 2... Yay... I'll finally have something to play with my Halo fanboy friends... Hopefully Sony implements multiple offline logins by then, so we don't have to be "Bobtheduck blew up Bobtheduck with a rocket launcher, while Bobtheduck sat on Bobtheduck's head, smoking a hookah."

@dalejn: But really the focus of this game is the magnitude of it all...I think little annoying things like crossing scoffolding would just piss people off. I do know what you mean that the realism would suffer a little bit tho.

Personally, I would prefer not having the "balancing on thin platform" gameplay. For instance, in Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, I really hated crossing logs. Getting across gave me to satisfaction, but falling off really pissed me off. But I also understand that there would be a sacrifice of some realism without it.

I couldn't finish the first one. I loved it up to that point in a long, dark room where a door shuts behind you and waves of enemies come through a door at the far end. I didn't have enough bullets or grenades or shields or grenades and no matter how well I was doing *this time* it was never good enough. Then I put it down and never went back. It may be time for a fresh stab at the thing.

I strongly disagree with your dissapointment: I'm glad you can just run across small platforms and be ok--first person shooters would suck if they all had platforming elements because lets face it, you can't see your feet and what they are landing on.

R2 isn't Mirror's Edge, and Mirror's edge isn't R2. The goals of each game are totally different. Mirror's Edge won't have half the features of R2, and R2 won't focus on traversing obstacles. Football wouldn't be better if you had dribbling, and basketball wouldn't be improved if it had tackling. How many scaffolding traversals do you expect to do over the course of the game? I'm pretty sure that's likely the sole one. It'd be a waste of time to put that feature on a game that is no way designed to cater to it. Don't understand the disappointment. It takes away from the realism when you play you can play ANY game, die, and live to fight again. Why must everything be compared to everything else. Birds should have fins, fish should have legs, night should be day, and day should be a little more like night.

I've lost my saved games twice when sending it in for repairs.. I've tried to back them up but for some reason it wants something that can hold 12 gigs and is not an external hard drive.
So, in short, F you Sony. and F you Insomniac.
