@LoopyChew: @Struct09: You guys all say that now because this is a relatively new process. Everyone justified yearly sports games in that same way when they started as well.
Give it 3 or 4 more years of this exact same process, and then let's see what the consensus is. People are going to get tired of this. Quickly.

@enewtabie: No doubt.
But given that the Wii versions of RB and GHIII have been selling like gangbusters without any DLC whatsoever, I do wonder if that is actually a concern for the bulk of console owners.
I suspect that a lot of potential buyers won't even know about the DLC until later. Then they may or may not buy a hard drive.

@mva5580: Errr what? Not only is Rock Band 2 more substantial than a "roster update", you're getting 85 songs on the disc plus 20 more as DLC for $60. How is that a rip off?!

@mva5580: The difference here would be that new songs have to be charted. I doubt they do any sort of significant stat updates for the players in sports titles (I could be wrong, seeing as I don't buy them).
Not to mention, on-disc is still cheaper per-song than DLC, and the ability to import songs from previous installments is a plus.

These dates have been at the official Rock Band store for a while now. EBGames and Amazon have been reporting these dates as well. Sadly though, the full Xbox 360 bundle won't be out until October 19th - so September 14th is the date for the standalone software.
Bring on September 14th!

It's a freaking MONTH. Jesus you people are impatient. As if you don't have 10 other games you could be playing in that time. Seriously.
Anyway it's pretty obvious the Rock Band/Guitar Hero games are going the way of sports games. Release one every single year with incredibly marginal improvements, but just pump out a new song list to keep them coming back. Songs for Rock Band/Guitar Hero are just Madden/NCAA/MLB's roster updates. Quite the rip-off.

Very interesting given the fact that the XBox price cut is happening on 9/7/08.
An XBox 360 Arcade ($199) is the cheapest and earliest way to get Rock Band 2 if you don't already have a current gen console.
In fact, the Arcade + Rock Band 2 is actually $30 cheaper than the PS3 alone!

@jonndirrt: I also like the approach to music selection GH brings: More lesser known, but more (In my opinion) musically rich songs. I prefer Nirvana's In Utero more than Nirvana's Nevermind.
And for the record, Activision is EVIL. They are the new EA. And EA is actually putting some effort into making (somewhat) decent games lately. They still need to stop designing by committee, but they are definitley going in a much less evil direction.

@mva5580: Interesting point, but I actually think that the rhythm genre might be even more sustainable than sports. Perhaps even the most easily sustained franchises ever.
Because the levels in Guitar Hero (and now Rock Band) are SONGS (that have already been written, recorded, and certified hits), level design is almost a paint-by-numbers affair. Even with the modest starting point of the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, there are more than 40 years of rock songs available. Thus, fresh levels have been waiting on the shelf for 40+ years, designed by everyone from Elvis Presley to Marilyn Manson.
I summed it all up in a post around the time GH3 came out

@mva5580: While I agree that some people are going to get bored of the formula after a couple years, I think it's a little early to be calling it out just yet.
Also, I think it also depends on how you approach this whole music-game genre. If you approach it as just a game, then yes: people are absolutely going to get sick of it. BUT, what about just considering this a new, interactive way of listening to music? We've all been listening to albums most of our lives, that doesn't mean we're suddenly sick of music. New artists, albums, genres, and songs are released, and it's a new experience every time.
I play quite a few instruments outside of the videogame world as well, so this may be a musician's mentality, but plopping down behind that fake plastic drumset is just my new favorite way of experiencing music. I don't see that ever getting old.

@mva5580: Um, I'd say a new setlist is a BIG improvement compared to roster updates. That is the core content of the game and is completely changed. @Muzykmann: And that's great, it's your money and you should spend it how you see fit. I'm not telling people how to think, nor do I have any suggestinos on how to make it better. My PERSONAL preference is to download all the games on Frets on Fire for free and use the Alarian 2.9 mod which makes it look just like Rock Band or Guitar Hero. But I know that's not a solution for most people because, well I have no idea why it's not a solution. I guess maybe some people just feel better about Rock Band because they're paying for it and feel it has more polish. Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes.
All I'm saying is that Rock Band/Guitar Hero are huge now, but this business model is dangerous in regards to frustrating the general consumer base. It's all good and well that they're releasing a lot of new songs. But how long does that last? A month for most hardcore people? 2 maybe? Just having a new setlist every year isn't going to be enough to sustain these games long term. Disagree with me all you want, it doesn't bother me any. I'm just stating my opinion.

Aside from a couple of new options and features (most of which Harmonix has addressed) I wanted nothing new from RB2, just a metric butt-load of new content. They're delivering.

I don't think I'd have that opinion if the releases weren't so close together of a retail product. @mva5580: You're getting $168 worth of DLC (at standard 160 MSP/$1.99 per track, $208 worth if you count the 20 free downloadable tracks at release) and fairly major engine and gameplay updates (hyperspeed, band challenges, new outfits and costumes, revamped vocal detection, among other things that could be even MORE paid DLC if they wanted it to be) for sixty bucks.
To be honest, I wish they could afford to do that more often than two such releases in ten months. I'd be a happy camper.
And in regards to the music editor in GHWT, it'll probably be fun, but it'll more than likely be just as hard as it was to make good music in MTV Music Generator.

However, the quality and size of the setlist (to say nothing of the mysterious free 20 songs) was enough to win me over again. And it was really quite game of Harmonix to include the RB1 importing feature.

Alex Rigopulos: The reason we're releasing it on the 360 early is that it's the lead development platform, so we're finishing the game on the 360 first. And rather than hold that version back to release it when the other versions are complete, we decided we wanted to get it into the audience's hands as early as we could.

I get what you're saying here, and if all you're interested in is a guitar sim and you're willing to do the legwork, then Frets on Fire is an excellent choice.
What RB and GH:WT offer is innovation in the holistic experience. Playing by yourself is all well and good, but throw in a singer, drummer, bassist, a couple cases of beer, six or seven players waiting in the wings, and you've got a very enjoyable night.
Additionally, the idea of playing the fake guitar can be difficult for people to wrap their heads around, especially if they aren't musically inclined or seasoned gamers. But (almost) everyone can sing along to their favorite song. So they start there, but eventually they'll say, "hey, can I try the guitar?" or "drumming looks like fun." And then they're hooked.
Developer switch aside, GH3 fell victim to staleness. For me at least, I found it notably less fun than the jump from GH1 to GH2. Mostly because that mechanic is largely perfected and there really isn't room for innovation within that particular area without resorting to too many gimmicks (boss guitar duels being borderline). Or maybe ramping up the difficulty to ridiculous levels (fuck YOU, One on Expert). Cross that line, and it becomes less of a simulator and more of a game, which runs contrary to its initial appeal. I wonder if RB2 will avoid that.
I think the gameplay mechanic is going to be largely saturated at the level of RB and GH:WT. Aside from adding more cymbals, maybe a keytar or cowbell, I can't think of much to grow in terms of a leap from GH3 to RB. Of course, a year ago I was thinking that nothing could come along and dethrone GH3 for me, so I hope I'm wrong. I guess that's why they make the games and I just hemorrhage cash each year to pay for it and feel grateful for the experience.

I'm fairly sure it's not a timed exclusive, but instead the fact that the 360 is the lead SKU for Rock Band. Anyway, this is great news.

Dear Timed Exclusive,
You're only worth it if you're at least 6 months.

@Muzykmann: Also, I don't have the $3500 to drop on real instruments and recording hardware/software. What do you suggest? Wii Music?
Lay off, jerk.

not sure if anyone has bothered mentioning this or not (got tired of going through all the posts arguing about if it was worth it or not), but with how many people posted recognizing that as the blockbuster POS system im hoping someone did.
The release dates for games in the POS system are generally wrong, or at least they were when i was working for the company a few years back. If its changed in the last couple years great, i doubt it though because it shows a release date on a sunday. i dont remember the last big release for a game that was on a sunday other than the occasional nintendo one.

I really thought it was coming out in November. Two less months to wait. SWEET! Hopefully my Ion Drum Set will get in about the same time.

@Harteex: Nintendo prints money, so it's not a big deal to them, I'm sure.

As a blockbuster employee I can say for certain that is a Blockbuster Status screen. These dates are certainly subject to change, however we do get dates before they are announced to the street sometimes and these could be legit also. I am totally checking this out at work tom. lol.

Hooray! Brilliant. Now, how about the date for the United Kingdom and all those irritating European countries who so hilariously hold back our release dates for nearly two thirds of a year? Christmas, perhaps? Oh sorry, that's far too ambitious. Alright, how about March - just in time for the Easter hols? No? Well, come on then, wha- ... WHAT? May 2009? You've got to be bloody kidding! How LONG does it take you to regionalise some menus?

all y'all stop your jibba jabber, that's a Blockbuster Video POS (point of sale) screen. I used to work there and their dates were always wrong. They just gotta put something down for it to be in the system. i wouldn't call this a conformation.

When is the PAL release coming? Q3 2009?? How much is it gonna cost? 340$. Stupid EA region locking. I haven't decided if I'm gonna buy RB2 equipment or not but if I am, I'll buy it for the PS3. And a PS3 to run it on.

Rockband lost its momentum in Europe when it was far too late, overpriced and launched almost around the same time as World Tour was announced.
I hope this time around both GH and RB realize that gamers inform themselves world-wide. When there is hype about a new game that launched in the US, we want to play and buy. When the US has had a game for 6 months and moves on, we start losing interest.
If the problem for the games are the smaller stores here in Europe then just make it an Amazon exclusive...

AWESOME! I needs me some more Rock Band...because..you know, there's just so LITTLE DLC for it...I mean...48 songs is not enough...

My only complaint about having to wait a month longer than the 360 to play RB2 is the fact that everything will probably be FC'd by then. And it's going to be incredibly hard to not watch any vids for true sightreads.

Well I suppose the ps3 version will reach my country in november, then.
Now just gimme some Rust In Peace DLC and i'll get this and the ion kit.
Also I think some black metal would be cool, except tr00 n3cr0 black metal dudes do not play videogames (lol), and it would completely fail to reach its destined market. but still, some nargaroth would rock (shyeah right. i can dream :P) "Love is always over with ejaculation" could be an instant hit.

I work at Blockbuster, and I'd take these release dates with a grain of salt.
They change constantly. I'll repost dates of other games also when I get to work tonight.

@enewtabie: you don't need a hard drive to just play the game. You might want it if you're planning on downloading more songs.

@Rectangle:
Then you can't download new songs -- that's brilliant. Just get a PS3 and for the price of the HDD add-on you get built in wifi / user upgradable off the shelf hdd / Blu-ray. I honestly don't see the value in the 360 anymore.
Also the Rockband 2 hardware isn't going on sale until the PS3 RB2 release in October. Get your facts correct at least. :)
