Don't get me wrong, I think that if a game's technology is absolutely dependent on the PS3 that it should be developed for that console, but the consoles are comparable enough in their capabilities and games humble enough in their demands that very rarely does that need actually arise.

As for the game exclusives, Sqeenix will obviously hold back on FFXIII since they said both PS3 and 360 will be the same.

But on Versus it will be much better since there's nothing that holds them back.

Not to be a negative Nancy, but would an EA acquisition of T2 change some things? Like promises of a new PS3 exclusive?

As an owner of all 3 consoles I want exclusives out the ying yang, but it just doesn't make much financial sense to make Max Payne exclusive. Hopefully I am wrong, but in the mean time I will pretend I didn't hear this rumor.

@BelmontHeir: I agree. I've got to play Mass Effect a couple of times on the PC and I find myself wanting my old Xbox 360 just for Tales of Vesperia and Fable 2, but LBP, Resistance and Killzone 2 makes me a little happier. Trust me, the first time I got my PS3, I wasn't too thrilled :/

As a PS3 owner, I'm more than willing to admit that there are many 360 exclusives that I'd love to play - like Mass Effect and Tales of Vesperia. Since it's financially feasible for me to own both consoles, how do I cope? I look for PS3-exclusives to soften the blow and make me feel like I made a worthwhile investment. That's why I'm anticipating playing Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet this fall.

Also, L.A. Noire, Midnight Club, and "Rockstar Old West Ps3 Project [untitled] - TBA 2009" which is most likely Gun 2. In the release dates as well so we can assume that the exclusive isn't any of those.

It seems like Max Payne 3 is in good hands, since I've heard a lot of good things about The Warriors game. But would there even be a MP3 in development if the franchise didn't have a forthcoming movie? I can't recall too many people clamoring for a Max Payne 3. Maybe I'm wrong, though, and the series has a massive fanbase.

Pretty happy about this, PS3 has the power to run a graphically incredible game were it not always held back by the lowest common denominator development that always has to take the lesser powerful XBox360 into account. I am sure Xbox360 owners would agree, I doubt they would want a Wii game dumbed down for their 360 in comparison.

The days where people could cry 'NO GAMES' at the PS3 are over. Similarly, this stigma too is coming to an end since the PS3 has a nice install base where if a publisher goes for PS3 exclusivity, they will sure as hell make plenty of profit. Of course the fact that this generation has thus far been the death of the exclusive game (for the most part), i dont think publishers will want to keep to one console especially when the other console has 2 or 3 times the userbase. I can see Sony's drive for securing developers rather than publishers and it makes sense.

But of course this is something that can easily be negated by two things as MS has shown very nicely....
1) more consoles (11 million install base) means they can weedle the publisher into not giving a damn about the other platform (at this point Wii doesnt count, seriously). Which is why i will probably grab the $200 Arcade 360 for some of the exclusive 360 games. See how well this will play into Microsoft's strategy?
2) cold hard cash for exclusivity, or compensation, or support, or publishing the game a third-part dev makes.

Id add more but i forgot where i was headed with this loooong ago.

la noir was according to some website i saw originally a ps3 exclusive announced by sony but checking their site now says something along the lines of next gen consoles which is most likely both systems. the ps3 exclusive is hard fact tho, you can find it in the official playstation blog from about a year back.

This multi-plat move is something new and the fact that porting hasnt even started (theyre too busy finishing it for Japan on the PS3) confirms that. If anything, the 360 version may look a bit shabbier (which i doubt, these games always look the same these days).

Hmmmm....well it's a rumor for now.

BUT Rockstar did say a while back they made a deal with Sony for some exclusive titles (this came post GTAIV 360 announcement) and IMO I think it may be the new Red Dead Revolver or some other random Rockstar title. People here are speculating that it will be LA Noire, but I have to disagree, especially if the exclusive title is being developed by R* North, because LA Noire isn't being developed by them.

I'll bet they're referring to Rockstar's film noir game set during the 1940s (whatever happened to that?) that was announced a PS3 exclusive. Of course, that project's not exactly 'all-new', but is it really feasible that Sony would be able to get exclusivity for not one, but TWO R* games? If dlc sets you back 50 mil, how much do two full games cost? Even if this rumor is true, I'd have to think 'timed exclusive' at best, unless Sony's really ready to throw on the warpaint.

I'm a PS3 owner and fan (not fanboy, you can like/prefer something without being illogical or ridiculous). Your honesty is refreshing. While I'm not interested in Mass Effect or Tales of Vesparia, I will be playing Gears 2 and Castle Crashers.

My theory for fanboyism is that each company has a gaming philosophy (possibly due to the cultures they originate from) and gamers, based off their history with the brand, align themselves with that philosophy. The promise of that philosophy being played out is what allows them to cling to potential. They want to feel ensured that there will always be a strong place for that gaming view. Thusly you get folks gloating of sales, arguing over features, and overlooking titles that they might very well like. It happens on both sides. If Epic was making Gears on the PS3 it'll sell well over a million. If Killzone or Resistance 2 magically made their way onto the 360, they'd sell well over a million. Is a 360 gamer and PS3 gamer really all that different? Are we inherently incapable of liking the other's games simply because we know its not coming to ours? We are indeed different as individuals, but as a whole we are the same. We have different levels of awareness. If 360 gamers played Shadows of the Colossus or God of War, they'd likely like it like Sony fans do. I hate Halo, but I've got to believe there are millions of PS3 owners who'd play it and LIKE it. Its likely I'll always be partial to Sony cause I agree with their gaming philosophy (that being variety and innovation). They've got me this generation because they've got the most exclusives, in my opinion the most potential, and the best value for the money. But you won't hear me whining cause an Xbox owner got to share in some multiplatform fun. Heck the Wii is completely useless to me, but I wouldn't mind having MadWorld.

Here's a reason why both the X-Box 360 and PS3 need exclusives: Competition.

Microsoft scores a few exclusives that look really appealing, they get more customers. Sony sees this and makes deals with Game Devs so they get appealing games as well. Devs get more money to make better games and have to break the Madden trend, by creating new games with higher production values.

This in turn helps fund the next generation of consoles, which come out with new features and better production values than their previous counterparts.

Every system gets the same games, only one console is needed. Innovation stops. Pretty soon we're stuck with one console. Don't like the features of that console? Well, too bad, because it's the only one.

In the Asian market (specifically in Japan) Sony can stop selling games and it will still sell more PS3 than MS will sell 360s. that leaves North America. Even here, in 2008, the PS3 outsold the 360 on a month-to-month basis. and even in terms of total units sold, Sony is catching up very fast.

oh and not EVERY SINGLE 360 owner is going to but that game so it's impossible to lose 6 million users. especially when 3rd party games are doing well on the PS3 (MGS4 has sold almost 4 million copies in 2 months)

When Microsoft launched the original XBox, Sony was pretty much dominating the whole market with almost no competition but that didn't stop developers from making exclusive deals with M$ (Dead or Alive, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, FABLE, RIDDICK, etc.). By your logic, Developers should have just abandoned the xbox and made games exclusively for the PS2 but that's not how it turned out.

This is a terrible argument. Innovation in games is driven by competition between software, not hardware. Publishers compete with each other for the consumer's dollar, not with hardware manufacturers. A single dominant console would be the best thing that ever happened to video gaming; development time and cost would decrease because resources would be devoted to development on a single platform rather than several, so games would come out sooner, would be less expensive, and everybody would get to play them (provided they own the system) rather than just the people who decided to pick one console over another. Best of all, dick-waving system fanboys would no longer clutter up comment sections and forums across the Internet with their petty, insecure pot-shots at owners of the "other" system.

Almost got my hands on a PS3 devkit, but then the company I was working for got denied by the publisher last minute, and I lost my job before I could even start it :) Even so, I did a bit of research about the hardware involved in both platforms, and if what I've read is true, then PS3 has the edge in terms of video processing power, and a huge edge in floating point processing power (which is debatable as to whether this is advantageous to gaming or not).

@zaagis: I would doubt that. The Max Payne franchise has only sold some 7 million copies on three platforms. I would expect new Max Payne game to sell more than its predecessors but not this more.

@dagreatest: Max Payne games were pretty popular on Xbox and PC (yeah, PC, maybe you heard about it). Many of its fans on these two platforms dont have PS3 and wont buy one any soon. These people would be lost sales, even if they buy the game later, they are likely to buy used copy or budget re-release.
PS3 may outsell Xbox 360 in Japan, but that does not mean it successful in that region. But it does not really matter, because no one expects Max Payne game to sell millions of copies in Japan...

I remember Rockstar stating that it worked out a deal for an exclusive PS3 title back when Xbox2 was working out the exclusive GTA4 content. I Read that on kotaku I think.

man, the ps3 actually has a lot of great exclusives, but most of them are made by sony-owned companies at this point.

i would actually love to see what rockstar north could create, with a ps3 exclusive. they could take advantage of the huge space of a bluray disk, and not have to worry about making sure the game runs equally well on multiple platforms, which would be nice.

I'm terrified of Max Payne not being developed by Remedy. MP1+2 are two of my favourite "pinacle of a genre" examples of gaming. Two perfect 8-10 hour shooters with decent enough fun stories. Stranglehold wishes it was that good.

That said, if I recall they were produced or released or overseen by Rockstar, so if they can pull a few strings and get a couple of the original staff (story / scenario design, a few artists etc) as team leads, I'm certain they could do a good job of it.

Also, I think they should of chose Michael C. Hall to play the titular role because he has the voice, demonstrated excelently by internal dialoug in 'Dexter', and his face seems to convey more of a Payne feel.

@Stavren: I think the thing about PS3 gamers wanting exclusive games is NOT bragging rights -- more a thing of getting more from their console. Multiplatform usually start development on the 360 and sadly when they get ported over they are simply not making the most of the hardware.

Well I know that's why I look out for exclusives on PS3 anyway. Look at games like Killzone, Ratchet & Clank and MGS4. The difference is visible.

Of course gameplay makes the game but it's just a shame developers don't tend to use the PS3's extended power.

Then again I do keep hearing how hard it is to code for ;)

First L.A. Noire and now another exclusive? I have two questions:

(1) Why the hell is Rockstar making system exclusives any more? I thought they'd abandoned that after breaking three GTA exclusives in the last generation.

(2) What sort of odds do we want to lay on Rockstar going ahead and breaking those down the road? They've set something of a precedent, with companies like Capcom and 2K Games doing the same this generation.

And a PS3 exclusive, well if any of this comes to fruition I'll be missing out on a game, but Rockstar + Sony have always been chums so it's kind of expected.

In Max Payne 2 I thought the hardest ending (the one where Mona lives) brought good closure to the series in general so I actually haven't been holding my breath for a 3rd installment.

However, I welcome this new chapter with open arms as long as it's not a cash-in for whatever success the movie will receive.

i loved the max payne series, although i thought the story in the 2nd game was awful. The Warriors was incredible though, and its a shame more people dont buy that one.

Rockstar has not had an actual "exclusive" since Table Tennis, and even that ended up ported to the Wii. Their only technical "exclusives" are GTA: Advance and Chinatown Wars, mainly due to the systems they're developed for.

I'm thinking the PS3 exclusive could be more like a PS3-exclusive set of GTA IV DLC.

It's about time we get a new Max Payne game in the works. I've been waiting for Rockstar to announce MP3, er-I mean Max Payne 3 ever since I busted through Max Payne 2 in less than 7 hours. Hell I'm surprised we're not getting a game based movie version of the upcoming Max Payne movie. Hopefully Rockstar do well with the game, I only own the 360 atm but I guess the PS3 could do with some exclusives.

Back in E3 2007, Jack Tretton was interviewed. This is basically the gist of what was revealed:

GTA4 was originally a PS3 exclusive but Rockstar wanted to break their contract so that it can go on the 360 as well. Sony agreed but in return for breaking the contract, Rockstar was obligated to make 2 PS3 exclusives for Sony. One of them most likely being L.A Noire and the other being the aforementioned mystery game in this article.

The PS3 and the 360 have the same amount of RAM, only the 360 has it all in one memory bank whereas the PS3 has separate memory banks for the system RAM and the GPU RAM.
