Sam's Club Prints Your New Madden Favre Cover While You Wait
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on August 13, 2008
Those of you planning to pick up your copy of Madden NFL 09 at your local Sam's Club may be in for a bit more value than the usual discounted prices. An official for the warehouse store dropped us a line this morning to let us know that Sam's Club locations with photo centres will print out a high-quality version of the updated packaging featuring Brett Favre in his dashing New York Jets uniform, which we revealed to you last night, right inside the store upon purchase of the game. Sure, you could head over to EA's Madden 09 site and download your own, but getting other people to do things for us is one of the principles that America was founded on.
We checked out Sam's prices for the games after receiving the news, and they do offer a nice little discount. The PS3 and Xbox 360 version are going for $US 55.55 ($US 83.22 for the collector's edition), with the PS2 and PSP versions marked at $US 36.33, the Wii version at $US 46.66, and the DS version a bargain at $US 26.66. All this plus a free cover replacement while you wait? None too shabby.
Update - Just got word from Walmart that they'll be printing covers on-site as well, though the games are regular price and you don't get a Walmart card with your picture on it - that's reserved for managers.

This is like those pub bartop games you put quarters in to play erotic photohunt... except less naked female.
Not a bad photoshop job by any means, but some spots just look off.

Yeah, I can't wait to see how many issues come out of this. Either the employee will be too incompetent to use a printer, printer out of order, out of paper, (enter your own excuse).

Did you mean to type "Madden 09" in the first sentence in the post? But this is pretty cool that theyll change the cover while yo wait.

They should take it a step farther and offer to put your own picture on the cover.

I do enjoy going to Sam's club for the nice discounts and their usually good service. As long as you don't mind the fact that your basically shopping out of a warehouse. If I was going to get Madden then I would be picking it up at Sams

That's what I call service, it's weird that Sam's Club is so awesome but Walmart blows.

I wonder if Costco will do this too.
@zombie16thc: They are just enforcing the company's copyrights/trademarks.

I buy all of my games at either Sams Club or Costco. They are usually a little bit cheaper and they are closer to my house than any other store.

I find it funny that a company can release these altered covers but C&D websites that have fan made covers.

Just to let everyone know Walmart and Sam's Club are part of the same company. But Sam's Club bargain bulk deals are just so ridiculously amazing.

So I'm confused... If he is a Packer on the Cover will he be a packer in the game when you first boot up? The insert won't do anything to fix that. I smell an update!

I just read the EA site linked in the post and they say that the roster update is only for online games. If we want to have accurate rosters offline we have to trade all the players ourselves?! WTF

@reverseclipse: A buddy of mine has the game and says you can use the online roster update in offline mode. Maybe they just meant you had to go online to get the update.

@reverseclipse: unless they've drastically changed things, they are just saying that in order to get the update you have an online connection and download them.

Isn't Sam's Club like Costco? You have to pay a yearly fee to get a card in order to buy from the store while Walmart is a walkin store like target.
The difference in service even though they are own by the same corporation is the fee.

Just so everybody knows Blockbuster Video locations will also have these replacement (Update?) covers (I work there so I know). You can get them when you buy yourself a copy.

Now, will EA realize the potential of these covers on demand and partner with a retailer to do custom covers with a player from every team next year? I think there would clearly be a market if EA is willing to spread the endorsement budget out a bit.

Oh, and I should mention that my Sam's Club was selling the game for $55.55. $52 and some change if you buy it online, but obviously no alternate cover that way. Also, in-store, they had MGS4 for $52 and some change, in case anyone cares.

It seems this isn't nationwide.... I picked up my copy after work today from my local Sam's Club in West Allis, WI, which has a photo processing center, and they looked at me cross-eyed and had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned this.

Only at corporate levels do they get a picture... my store manager has a tag just like everyone else... she even wears a blue shirt... I hate being stuck wearing the same f'n colors all the time

To clarify, as I understand it... Sam's Club is Wal-Mart's way of competing with it's top rival and arch nemesis, Costco...

Being a Wii owner, I couldn't care less... but apparently, EA saw that one coming. I think it's much more amusing to keep the packers jersey. May the Madden curse strike Farve's fickle ways!
