Second Halo Movie Script Lives Long Enough To Generate Concept Art
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 5, 2008
That first Halo movie project? With Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson? So dead. Never. Being. Made. But, as we already know, Halo nerd Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, GI Joe) has stepped into the vacuum left by Jackson & co, and has written a script based on the events of the first Halo novel, Fall of Reach. That script's apparently been kicking around Hollywood for a little while now, and has a few people very interested in the project, to the point where some concept art is being drawn up "as part of an eventual presentation to Microsoft". Film site Latino Review claim to have gotten hold of some of this art, and will be posting it over the next few weeks. Which, provided our chains aren't being yanked, should be a hoot. The first piece is a little...fantastical, though LR say it's actually in the script/book. Click through for the full thing.

@Salen
The reason they didnt use the first script is because it would cost WAY to much to make and thats why it was canned in the first place where as this script would not cost as much

@gadjet: Oh.
Wait, why didn't they just use the first script then? Uh, nevermind. It's probably a Hollywood thing. Anyways, I'm still feeling meh about all these Halo rumors with no real confirmation thing going on with them.

It's the second script for the first movie, not the first script for the second movie.

@karasu is my homeboy: And before anyone corrects me and I can't respond at work, I know Cloverfield was a codename in the movie for the location, but it wasn't a huge part that was mentioned more than once. Just like his example of the Halo only being in there towards the end. :D

@Aye Mak Sicur: Plenty of titles don't exactly refer the movie. Like Cloverfield. And I can't remember the name but there was a recent chick flick I was forced to see where the title didn't exactly refer anything specific in the movie, either. That's not a huge issue at all. They would probably want to keep it just called Halo because Halo is such a huge brand.
@Black_Ops_19: @Kyoji: I haven't read the book so I'm going to trust you guys that this "works" and is cool instead of some kind of corny space power ranger interpretation.
I'm excited. Hopefully they approve something soon, because they'll probably take 2 years+ to make it. If they started now, it wouldn't be out until 2011. They obviously haven't greenlighted it yet. Hurry the hell up!

When i heard halo movie was first coming out i was hoping that they would base it on the first book. And now that they've got a script on it my dreams may be fulfilled.
Please oh great halo grant thy wish!

If you guys have a close look at the IMDB [www.imdb.com] - you will still find the original story from the first game there. I still think that they won´t change that. And this Picture looks, sorry to say that, pretty shitty :D

Fall of reach would make for a pretty good movie. They would have to show what John actually looks like but I'm ok with that since it's a movie.

Ok, Bungie needs to announce something NOW. I don't care if they announce that we're all horrible folks and we'll never get Recon armor. No more rumors. They haven't even made the first Halo movie and we've got a script for a second? Gah.
Oh well, I guess it could be worst though. Still, all these rumors and the failure to deliver at E3 has just felt like folks at MS's marketing department decided there wasn't enough hype and let down yet.
*waves his white flag* I surrender already, Microsoft. Now give us news on new Halo stuff already.

@Aye Mak Sicur:
Are you actually suggesting they change the name that millions recognize because the movie itself contains almost no actual "Halo" sightings? Somehow I doubt that will fly with marketing, or Microsoft, or...well, with anyone.
Following Fall of Reach is a great way of entering Halo, it builds up tremendous anticipation at the end when you finally see Halo. I'd write this as a two parter, not your standard three-quel. Fall of Reach, movie one. Halo game, movie two. Actually, Hollywood would probably want to skip the original Halo and move straight to Halo 3 for a happier ending.

I think that most likely those who played the games will watch this movie, and for those who do no know it will just be a name.
There are endless movies out whos title has nothing much to do with the story in them.

The problem with writing a movie named "Halo" based on The Fall of Reach is that the only Halo will appear literally 5 seconds before the credits roll. The end of the book runs right into the opening cutscene of halo. I'd imagine they'd have to change the name, seeing as how alot of people would have no idea what a Halo is and why this movie doesn't have any even though it's clearly all about them.

They had problems with Microsoft and Bungie claiming to want "final draft" on the Halo script. The problem is Microsoft are not a movie studio with any hits or experience and they want the movie to have no plot points that fall outside the scope of the games which leaves little room for hollywood-izing the script. Plus Peter Jackson's last movie King Kong was a flop which makes him a fifty-fifty proposition of success right now.

As long as they don't, ya know, make a movie on stuff that happened in the game. That pretty much makes it pointless.
I wouldn't mind seeing a "Ghosts of Onyx" movie.

@Aye Mak Sicur: You could name it Iron Man - Halo?!?
This could be interesting, I would rather still have Weta involved actually, but maybe this could be a string of Halo movies.
"Fall of Reach" would be a cool name actually, then the sequel could be named "Halo"...

What part was this again?
Because if it's the one where the boarded a Covie ship around when they were still teens, I'm pretty sure they didn't have the PoA and they took a Pelican.
The 2nd time was when they had the PoA, but they still took a Pelican to the ship dock.

Too bad about Blomkamp, I would've really wanted to see what he can do with a good budget and script. Having WETA and Jackson to back that up... Guess it sounded too good to be true then.
I'm not saying Pirates of the Caribbean is a bad movie, just that Blomkamp & Co. would've probably been able to create something... exceptional, while what might come out of this new deal sounds more like your run-of-the-mill hollywood blockbuster.

I haven't read the book so I can't fully criticize them there, but I have played the games and I find it very strange those Spartans are out in space floating around. Quite possibly about to enter the atmosphere of the planet Reach. While Spartans do have a lot of armor they can't fully just free fall from orbit. They need an escape pod just like everyone else.

@Quicksilver4648: Read the books, the Spartans DID free-fall from orbit onto Reach. Sure it fucked them up a bit, but meh.
However this particular scene is from when the Spartans are boarding a Covenant ship orbiting Sigma Octanus IV if I'm not mistaken.

Titles aren't suppose to refer to anything directly from the piece.
Also am I the only one who doesn't give a s*** about the schlock Latino Review pours out? Does anyone else find it a little suspicious that they always get the scripts for video game movies and these "scripts" always follow the book or video game's plot exactly? I mean, seriously, they're the bloody LATINO REVIEW, not the friggin Times or some established gaming/movie magazine.

First of all, yes that concept art is very average. I have read the book and understand the scene though. On the subject of the directions of the film, I think film adaptations of the books are the way to go. Face it, 0.005% of the viewers won't have played a Halo game. The films can bridge the gaps between the games, just like the underrated books were intended to do. I thought Fall of Reach was a great sci-fi book, if a little dialogue heavy (which, to be frank, surprised me no end as I expected it to cater for the main Online Halo audience). So I welcome the idea of a film adaptation.

Oh god that art is embarrassing.
You can't make a Halo movie based on the story in the books and games. You'd have to have a master talent to create an good story with Halo's setting - like what was done with the Disney's Pirate theme park ride, only Halo has worse writing than that.
