Sega Wins Kotaku's Coveted 'Best Press Kit Of Games Convention' Award
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 4:20 AM on August 24, 2008
Sega whipped up an exceedingly clever Games Convention press kit for the just announced The House of the Dead Overkill. Capitalising on the '70s horror schlock style of the on-rails Wii shooter, Sega stuffed a horrific post card and The House of the Dead T-shirt into a custom VHS sleeve case. Yes, that little brick is wearable — just add water.
We've secured two of these schwag boxes for future contests. Start brushing up on your The House of the Dead dialogue, kids. Oh, and check out the half-dozen pics of the press kit in our gallery below.

Isn't it insane, that even this generation of youngen's are considering VHS as the way of the 8 track?.

It's strange that they went this route considering how badly Grindhouse flopped. Oh well, I guess people like me will be into it, but there aren't a whole lot of people like me!
Now if only they would make Shenmue 3, Sega would again become the best game publisher.

My god that is cool. Even if this game turns out to be crap, you have to respect Sega for adhering to this theme so well.

Sega, you're seriously awesome for doing stuff like this.
Sure, it'll be your third on-rail shooter on Wii (GHOST Squad and HotD2&3 Return were released prior to this), but I do love me some shooters.

Does anyone know if Robert Rodriguez had anything to do with the trailer for this game and the promotional materials? A lot of the effects they use look very similar to the filters that Troublemaker films developed for Planet Terror, and the packaging here looks pretty similar in terms of design.

I have to agree with other: Sega is SO full of win for totally following through on the whole theme of this game, from beginning to end. :-)
As for Shenmue 3...I think we'll get it if Sega brings it back and redoes 1 & 2 for the Wii. If they do something like that, I think we can be pretty sure that 3 would be on the way. And personally, I'd like to see that, as I never got to try the first two, and have always wanted to. :-)

@BPMΣ: I'm going to go with you really can't have too many on-rails shooters; especially since you don't need to buy guns for them now. I would care less if arcades still had a big presence, but they are fading away.

This game can't be complete without the obligatory Uwe Boll cameo! As long as we get to shoot the bastard.
Or hell, if there's a sequence that mocks his "directorial choices", I'd love it.

Kudos on Sega for using 702xx, one of two 3-digit ZIP prefix that could only be in Louisiana, but isn't actually used. The other's 709xx.
Even better is that, by the patterns of ZIP code allocation, 702xx would most likely be in southeast Louisiana, probably the western Mississippi River delta, since 701xx is New Orleans and 703xx is Houma, to the southwest. 700xx covers the eastern delta, 704xx is north of the lake.
There's a ZIP code gap around Barataria Bay, which is a godforsaken enough place without zombies or VHS movie rental stores. That'd be my guess.

Kotaku speaking nicely of SEGA? The world is ending. :o This looks good. I'm liking the feeling this game is delivering.
@GusherKid: "Now if only they would make Shenmue 3, Sega would again become the best game publisher." Sure they would be respected again. That would also be the last thing SEGA ever did too. They'd surelly go down with style though, that much is obvious (and sad too).
@GoldRenamon: Because Resident Evil isn't from SEGA? Read carefully next time "yout [SEGA] third rail-shooter on wii".

Nice one Sega! Is it just me or does it seem to be SEGA is slowly getting its act together. Bayonetta looks good. They won't have any Sonic sex in the next Sonic game, this...Now if only Golden Axe comes out good enough.
I would have expected this from Capcom for Dead Rising than HotD but I'm cool either way.

This brought back the wierdest memory. Does ANYONE have any memory of a vhs/gun game combo system thingy from probably the mid-late 80's? Did betamax have something like this? I'm only asking because I have VAGUE memories of playing something like that with a friend when I was young in his basement. It was a jet fighter game with FMV, almost like an early Tomcat Alley for Sega CD. Wow, I've really just dated myself. I've been searching the internets but have come up empty so far. :(

@Sparky13: You actually found that surprisingly fast compared to when I was looking for it about a year ago..
While the console didn't really last long at all, (I think about 5 games were made for it) it was really ahead of its time.
I remember feeling very weird like..."uhhh graphics like this..im so confused, why does Sonic look like shit and this looks like real life?"
But then again, I was very young, and the console died out quick. But it is a weird to remember the console and say...did this even happen, I remember it so clearly.
Lol, I think having played any of Action Max gives you an automatic "Videogame Nerd License"

There is ONE thing that can make me more excited for the ridiculous over-the-topness of this. (Other than a 360 version with solid lightguns so I don't have to buy a Wii) At the beginning of the game, before even getting to the menu, a zombie shuffles by and stares at the screen and screams "SEGA!". Yeah, I just dated myself there, but come on retro-awesomeness all over the place.

It's B-movies, generally available on VHS. You never had those sleezy kinds? It would have been even better if they did the cardboard sleeve thing.
But this will be one contest I'm finally looking forward too.
PS: B-movies suck on dvd because the picture is too sharp. Analogue tape has that grittiness.
