Sierra (?) Bringing Back Red Baron (!?!)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on August 27, 2008
Hmmm. I first see this news, I get excited. After all, Red Baron - despite being 18 years old - is still the best damn World War 1 game around. But then I start asking myself questions. Like, aren't Sierra dead? Wasn't the whole point of the original Red Baron the fact is was steeped in historical accuracy? Why is this now an arcade shooter for the PlayStation Network where 17 bullets cause a battleship to explode?

"why is this now an ARCADE shooter..."
You answered your question... This isn't the original Red Baron game. It's an arcade game using the Red Baron name and the same time period. It's not as though it wasn't a well known historical figure that many could borrow from... They're just using a legendary pilot for an arcade flying game.

The original Red Baron is a classic. Hopefully they do keep the historical progression, the slower pace (made it feel a bit accurate), and the missions as they were. You know, like a Red Baron : Rearmed, rather than a completely retooled arcade style game.
They won't. Even with BC:R, I have very little faith in the reviving of older franchises in ways that stay faithful to the original games. Need to tap that short attention span kid's market, I guess.
It would probably be a pain for them to institute the faster clock in mutiplayer...
Ah well, worth keeping an eye on. Thanks for the heads up, Luke.

@HikariOblivion: Bad idea turning this into an arcade shooter, I couldn't agree more. I loved the Sierra/Dynamix flight games on PC, so I would LOVE to support a console release. The video makes it kind of hard to love the game though.

It's called "Red Baron Arcade". It's not like they couldn't make a non-arcade Red Baron game in the future still.

My heart skipped a beat for a second there, but watching the trailer fixed that. On the other hand, I'm a sucker for punishment, so here's to hoping for a remake of Stellar 7.

Think about it this way: this is not a remake of the Red Baron boxed game. This is a remake of Red Baron Online, which Sierra featured on its online service The [ImagiNation|Sierra] Network in the 90s.
That allowed you to dogfight against a number of life opponents (I forget if it was 8 or 16), was pure fun, and contained few elements of historical accuracy besides the plane models.
I had a lot of fun nights on INN back before the internet was everywhere. Oh, hay: someone's reviving it!

Red Baron Arcade has been out for a couple months on the PC, and it's due to be released soon on the PS3 by Stainless Games.
That would be awesome if they brought back the Red Baron series. But yeah, it's sort of disappointing that it's an arcade version. I hope the days of hardcore realistic flight combat sims aren't dead.
Actually, they aren't yet. There's two major PC contenders - Phase 3 of Over Flanders Fields (a mod for Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 3) and Knights of the Sky (which has just recently been renamed Rise of Flight?) by neoqb, which is due out hopefully this year, or early next year.
Would love to see even more competition :)

It's ok, I played it on the PC.
Nothing to write home about, but it was an enjoyable game. I liked it. It's not something you'll play for hours at a time, nor will you be playing it all year, but it was definitely fun if you're willing to look past the unrealistic-ness of it.

my childhood just died a little more (and for once, not by furries)
A Red Baron update, done like it should be done would be amazing. Realism being placed above any beyond anything is Red Baron. It was like Chess with guns. This is more like watching a coked out Lindsey Lohan play 52 pick up. It's ugly to watch and makes you want to punch a kitten.
Red Baron was a marriage of simulation and enjoyment that most games today don't get right. It's holds up surprisingly well even to this day. With a deep, non liner campaign mode. Update it, tack on a GTA like base mode and you have a million seller.
Anything... but this... shit!

When a Fokker E.I Eindecker can hold its own against Sopwith Camels, you know realism just got thrown into no-man's land.

Hey, all you RB2 fans should take a look at First Eagles from Thirdwire... it's a small indy development company, they're doing quite well with it. The main game plus the expansion gives a decent handful of planes, plus the modding community around it is pretty strong too, so a lot of 3rd party planes available. I haven't played it online yet, but what I've messed with so far is very cool. I used to fly RB2 online for a few years, and nothing has come along since that was anywhere close, except this one.

Hehehe, Strike Commander.
I remember it, but I don't remember if they ever released it. I had a poster for it on my wall that came out of a Wing Commander box. The F-16 flying vertical out of an explosion. I remember being so excited about it.
I played RB Online back in the day. It was a great time. So was Shadows of Yserbius or whatever it was on TSN. The Sierra Network was a hell of a lot of fun.

It'll be a long, long time before we get another good historical flight simulator. Unless the inde scene has something I'm unaware of. This will probably be mostly good.
Explosions are an interesting thing about video games. On one hand, they are the universal symbol that something is no longer a threat/interactable. Machine, person, Goomba, barrel, once they explode, that's that. However, realistic explosions are not easy. I point this out because the biggest problem with the trailer seems to be the battleship explosion. (Obviously the looser, non-sim controls are controversial too.) First of all, I don't recall WWI fighters to be used around battleships. (They did have seaplanes, but they were used for training more than combat.) IF they were, the machinegun bullets wouldn't have done shit. You would've dropped some kind of bomb or torpedo. (I'm not certain torpedos were designed for aircraft deployment at that time.) Even if you did 'take down' a battleship in your little fighter, the explosion is rather ludicrous. A better mechanic would be to have it sink.
I'm not opposed to taking a classic franchis in a different direction. Getting a flight sim to sell on a console market would not be an easy task. But there are some subtle things they can do to improve the immersion of the game.

@bainelaker: Most of those Origin games of the time ran like crap. I was working at the Buy at the time and I remember the box saying it was a 20 MEG install. I thought, there's no fucking way people are going to play games that big! LOL, I think my MTW2's directory is close to 5 gig and god knows how big my Oblivion directory is...
Anyway, the game bombed because of the hardware requirements (Crysis anyone?).

i don't know why everyone is knocking this "Arcade" re-make of Red Baron. this game might actually be the most realistic flight sim EVER. if given only 17 bullets, the Red Baron could TOTALLY blow up a battleship!!!

I liked RB.
But the was one Sierra product i liked even more.
After Dark.
Seriously, bring that back, make a million. Its copyright is about to expire, and when it does, you can guarentee that some opensource dev will recreate it. Sierra should make money while they can.
