Skate 2 Displays Amateur Skateboarding Video Goodness
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 7:20 AM on August 2, 2008
While I was skeptical at first, I turned out to be a huge fan of the first Skate. There was something about that introduction sequence and the fact that the game had a video editor that made it stand out from its rival Tony Hawk franchise. Even in this trailer you can see they are sticking with their amateur skateboarding video roots.

Excellent, you want get off and walk this time. That completely killed the original Skate for me, getting anywhere became frustrating.

Skate is one of my favorite games ever. I like how they literally just showed the clips that will make skate fans happy. This video shows all the things we all wanted added to skate, and its great.

I hope they sort out the ps3 version. The framerate on the first one was annoying to say the least with its random slowdowns.
Then there was the whole farce of the online which never worked well at all.
Fingers crossed.

Last skateboarding game I thoroughly enjoyed was THPS3. I tried some along the way, e.g. Project 8, but none really did anything for me.

The most annoying thing about that trailer was the animations were still too robotic. Especially at the end, do a trick, hold still perfectly for 2 seconds, then let it go and land it. Too soon to ask for better (procedural?) animation in a skateboarding game?

THE CHAMP IS BACK
I bet Tony is in the office with the devs on his franchise and it's like a clip out of an old Kung Fu Movie when the students all get their ass whipped by the Evil Master, and then their masters walks in at the last minute when it's all about to seemingly end and the bad guy goes:

does anyone else think that skate and tony hawk should come out in alternating years so that they have more time to bring more features to the game. Skate landed a huge blow to the previously unstoppable tony hawk franchise but if it is constantly exploited every year it will fall into the same trap as tony hawk

The moment I knew they were fixing it so you could actually get off your board, so you can run up stairs with out having to traverse 5 city blocks just to get to a spot that's about the stairs that you're standing in front of, I knew I was buying Skate 2, hahah. Also, this time it sounds like you won't get that insanely annoying loading screen every time you warp back to a session marker. That used to drive me insane enough to stop playing for a while. So some huge fixes. They look like they're really perfecting what they did in the first game which sounds gravy to me. Also, in recent interviews they've been hinting that they've been hiding some big things they've done with the game. The word "epic" was thrown around a lot. So you know, it's got to be good...

@mfwahwah: Yeah that's what impressed me most about the trailer, too. Yes, you can get off and walk now, but how could that not be an option after all the comments regarding the last game? EA would be retarded not to take that criticism to heart. So I was expecting it...I think everyone that played the first game was expecting it. I wasn't expecting the ability to move objects into place for tricks, and I'm not fully convinced that was gameplay. Could be an intro to a challenge. What I didn't see was a darkslide, which is hopefully an available trick.

I so getting this. I got hooked to the first Skate after watching half of a trailer and knew that it was going to send the skateboarding/action sport genre further then where Tony Hawk has taken it. There is still a lot of love for the Tony Hawk series in my heart but I couldn't get over that game. I could feel myself looking at rails and gaps in real life and just thinking what I could do with my virutal skater. There have been very few games that have left me wanting to continue playing even when I wasn't even near my console. Skate 2 looks like a strong step in the right direction; I especially like how you can just push tables and benches where ever you need them to enhance a spot. This is going to be the sports game of the year.

Can't wait, but seriously EA... Fix the replay mode! This game DEMANDS more in the way of photo/video capturing than what you gave us before. It was depressing to strike an awesome photo-worthy moment, only to have 4 of the 5 angles you're given to choose from be in the exact same spot(or simply not even putting your character in frame). And the video player didn't even RECORD the clips, but rather just tried to recreate the replay in-game... what was once an awesome pedestrian collision now plays back with my character cartwheeling over an invisible force that was once a security officer. Your photo gallery and replay collection was so hampered by loading that what I thought would be one of the game's best assests was just a pain in the ass.

@Rob Phelps:
There probably are elements to their animation that are procedural when it comes to physics/animation on animation blending. I think if the transitions were slowed down a little it would look less robotic, but change the speed at which these guys can get back on their board and guess what... Just made actually LANDING tricks a whole lot harder (since it takes longer to get into the safe landing pose).
Just my 2 cents anyway. Until we move away from state-machine-based-blending-skeletal animation, we are going to see this jerkiness in our game characters for a long time to come. Only new animation technology can help us with that. At least these things aren't keyframed animations anymore. :P

I agree with owen99, skating isn't a popular sport among the masses to warrant releasing a video game about it every year. Consider football and soccer where there is a world wide fan base that truly follows the video game series (even during the world cup when two Fifa editions are released).
