Sony Announces New PSP Wi-Fi Tie-Up
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on August 22, 2008
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announces today that it has partnered with the world's largest global WiFi community FON to roll out FON access points for a free internet browser via the PSPxFON collaborative service. Starting today, there are approximately 44,000 FON spots across the country and something like 2,200 in Tokyo alone. Via the service, it's easy to connect PSPs to download game demos, clips, wallpaper and the like. To mark the beginning of the service, there are downloadable goodies for upcoming PSP title DISSIDIA.

@GDW1017: FON also operates in the US. No word on whether this PSPxFON deal is coming here though.

@GDW1017:
Correction: Everywhere.
:(
Also, anyone know if a similar company has the potential to offer something like this here, or are we pretty much out of luck within the old red, white and blue?

Man, America needs something like this. Every I go doesn't offer free Wifi.
God knows I'd use my PSP internet... if only *sad face*... aw, what the heck... :( !

@Jtn: FON hotspots are initially available to PCs, they're just juicing up their offer to include PSPs.

Question - in the UK, Fon is partnered with BT Internet for offering Wifi hotspots from BT routers.
Any idea if the same thing's gonna be done here re the PSP?

So these hot spots will only work with PSPs?

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Oic! That makes it a LOT less groan-tastic than I thought it was going to be. In that case, this seems like a really good idea! I wish that Starbucks had free internet, then I could go be antisocial in a social environment!

@ArgentAngel:
No. It's pronounced like Phone and that's what they were going for since it's a telecommunications company.

Two comments:
1. Kinky
2. Is FON some kind of pun on FUN?

So it's free hot spots? Seems like a pretty good deal.

So is this only Japan or were they nice enough to let Europeans in one some free WiFi, too?

@Milkzhakes: Would stick with College / University if I were you. I think schools get a bit narky when grown ups lurk around kids playgrounds playing with their laptops...

Nice idea.
I've got like 3 different FON Routers in my direct vicinity at home (Germany). Used them before I got my own line when I moved in.

I tried to sign up for FON once, but the hotspot availablity in my area was NIL. Maybe it's picked up some steam...I'll try again, but looking for FON hotspot is probably looking at a needle in a haystack. Basically you get a free FON access point to use.

This would be excellent here, it would actually make Skype a viable option, and ergo boost the sales of the new 3000. On top of that, web surfing, internet radio, and remote play...

FON offers free wifi to everyone within the community that shares theirs with others. All thats required is that you purchase and set up a FON router. They also have a FON spot finder on the website. I've been a member for years and its been awsome.

I love my Kratos PSP but it seems like a lot of these features are announced for Japan only. I'd like to try them and see if like/want them.
P.S: What ever happened to copying a movie file over to my PSP from a Blu-ray? That feature was announced but I never saw a follow up nor have I seen a Blu-ray this worked on yet.
