Sony Dishes The PSN Pre-Paid Card Release Info
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on August 28, 2008
So those PSN pre-paid cards aren't hitting GameStop until 2009? Screw GameStop. Sony have announced that, in addition to the stores currently stocking the cards (Pamida, Meijer and Speedway), come September three more chains will be selling them. Those three are Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Riteaid. Which is all well and good, but I'm getting the feeling there are people outside the US - like me, for example - more interested in these cards than Americans. Mostly because it'll make buying stuff like Rock Band DLC that much easier.

I know this may be a pointless question but any news on when we in Australia will be getting the prepaid cards? I'm sure a $20 prepaid card will cost us $50 just because but I'd still like to know when they are coming out.

@Hohenhein: Lol, you wish dont you? If the Wii point cards are any indication (or the lack of them in mexico) you can bet your butt we wont see these cards in Mexico.
Thing is that I dont mind not having Wii Point cards to buy sicne my Wii does accept my mexican Visa... unlike stupid PS Store!

about damn time!!! I'll spend like $50 on these friggin' cards next time I make a trip to McAllen TX soon-ish. Stupid Sony won't take my Mexican Visa my Wii has eaten hapily for the past 2 years. Hopefully I'll get these cards before Megaman 8 hits, I want it on my PS3.

"Which is all well and good, but I'm getting the feeling there are people outside the US - like me, for example - more interested in these cards than Americans."
May I suggest eBay? I bought a $50 card last week, received the code in a matter of hours (if you're patient, some sellers will mail you the physical PSN card - with added postage cost, obviously).
In order to try it, I bought DLC for SoulCalibur IV and didn't encounter any problem.
Bear in mind that I paid $62 for a $50 card, but that's still cheap for us Eurozone gamers ($62 = 42 euros, whereas PSN pricing follows the good old $1 = 1 euro rule - with the exception of Siren).

While it is great to see them expand their locations for the PSN cards, a gas station chain? Really? If they want to see them sell as much as the Xbox cards then they need to start selling at real game chains such as the Wallmarts, Bestbuys, and Gamestops from around the world.

@Karisu-Zero: It's a good thing I know of couple of Rite Aids around here. As for seven eleven...you ain't kidding. There's two like 6 meters of each other. Usually it comes down to choosing which one has less drug dealers around them (atleast around my way :/ )

@GKFinns: I KNOW!! it is silly. But I'm glad it's back. I don't mind using my credit card information (anymore) but I rather the cards for a safer bet. Especially when Super Street Fighter II HD remix comes out...if it ever comes out.

7-11s are a dime a dozen, and RiteAids are just a tad bit rarer than that. Good to see that they're going to be available at places people can actually get to instead of these other stores.

Everything we wanted? This is JUST beginning. I can finally get R&C: Quest for Booty, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Little Princess, DLC for games etc. If these cards came out NEXT year Christmas, you might have a point but it is coming out just in time for the huge amount of games coming out.

It seems silly Sony has waited almost two years to release these. Microsoft and Nintendo have easy ways to buy online content, and they've had it since day one. I understand Sony wants to make the cards safer from theft, but does that mean we have to wait until we've already purchased everything we wanted?

just curious. I've got a US account on the PSStore, just for the demos mainly, since i don't have a US Credit Card. If i managed to get my hand on one of these, i could then buy content from the US store no?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Sony blocks cards with FPO/APO billing addresses and it's a big "**** you" to the troops that they haven't rectified this in TWO YEARS. Even when they said they were rolling the cards out near installations I checked the NEX in Manama, Bahrain as wellas several Southeastern locations. No dice.
About time, Sony.

@ChiZ_MacT: Yes, I use PSN cards. I'm from Bulgaria, Europe. (We don't have PSNStore). The only way for me to buy stuff off PSN is via these cards, and only from the US store. Well, I can get some JP PSN cards too - but I don't need to do that yet.
You can buy US PSN cards off eBay.co.uk/whatever eBay - they send you the code via email. Cards cost a lot !! I.e I paid like $36 for a $20 card last time. !!! Also, there are VAT taxes, that are later added on when buying stuff from PSN! I'll try next time, but I bet if you register the fake US address in a US state, where there is no VAT, you'll avoid it.
Oh well, there's also Entropay, which I'll be trying the next time I like something on PSN Store. I had tried similar services before, and they failed me miserably.

Once again, please notice that they are all stores that already have the ability to access other types of card, RiteAid and 7-11 both sell Phone cards, and BlockBuster uses a similar system to activate accounts with thier new online service. Target, BB, CC, Wally World, and GS do not have any equipment to do anything like that yet, and it requires access to Sony's Financial network, so it needs to be set up carefully and securely, so it will be a while if ever, before big stores get it, but specialality stores like GS are working on it.

The stores they're selling them at don't deal very much in videogames. In my opinion this could mean there's a bit of a boycott of traditional videogame stores about the PSN cards. Since Sony is selling full retail games on PSN it would be understandable. Gamestop likes to sell a disc based copy of GT5 Prologue more than helping Sony selling a copy online.

The cards don't actually have any information on them, when they are rung up the money is put on the card. Not every retail chain is equip to do that, which is why their launch has been pushed back for so long. Entire companies will have to remodel their POS systems to sell those things. Way to go Sony.

I've been checking Best Buy, Cicuit City, Gamestop, EB Games, Wal-Mart for these damn things. No luck, but oh what's this? Oh there at the Speedway where I get my slushies and marlboros? Of course that's the the most logical place to sell them, it's like they know us gamers will, eventually, find ourselves in a Speedway.

I stopped by the local 7-11 for gas and was surprised, they already carry xbox marketplace point and live subscription cards, as well as having the latest madden game behind the counter for all systems. I can even go to my local supermarket and pick up some budget 360 or ps3 games. Its interesting to see games starting to penetrate the retail culture similar to movies.
