Sony To Debut EyeToy Play 2 At Leipzig

According to VG247, part of Sony's Leipzig press conference (at least, one of the parts we don't already know about) is to be devoted to an unveiling of the "next generation of EyeToy". Seeing as the successor to the EyeToy peripheral - the PlayStation Eye - is already out, we'll presume they're talking about a next-gen sequel to EyeToy Play, the game that came bundled with the original PS2 camera. We'll also presume it'll be taking advantage of all those neat features we've been shown over the past few months. And be subsequently excited. But remember, until David Reeves takes to that stage later today, chalk this one up as a rumour.

@bobtheduck: That's pretty cool. Practical uses too, like deciding on a new spikey haircut or what shade of blusher to wear on cross-dress Fridays.
Maybe this will be part of the SingStar announcement?

And, yes, i know this isn't the Eyetoy... I'm just saying Sony needs to put those SPEs to good use doing better image interpretation. Face recognition, voice recognition, and better gesture recognition than Antigrav had. Maybe the ability to distinguish between 2 or more people on the camera.

Eyetoy Play 2 has been out for a long time... I should know, I have it. It comes with a demo for Antigrav and it has many of the crazy camera stuff that Mac nuts think Apple invented for iChat. In fact, Eyetoy Play 3 is out... Maybe you mean Eyeplay, and I'd rather see an EyeKinetic Combat, and a US release on the damned thing for once...
I'm an Eyetoy fan, but I live in its least successful region.

I just did some checking on gamefaqs, Play 2 and 3 (3 is Europe only) already exist on PS2, so I don't think this will be Play 2, exactly, more like next-gen play.
Not that it really matters, should be cool no matter what they decide to call it.

I really hope it is, Play really was a fun game and is still very entertaining.
I always wondered why more people didn't get into it, I guess because it involves standing.

I don't even own a PS3, but the Eye Toy has always seemed so cool to me, ever since I watched Nick Arcade and wished I could play the final game for the big prizes.
Here's hoping for an impressive announcement!

To buy this they would need to make the PS-Eye compatible with PS2 eyetoy games. I refuse to have two cameras above my TV because I refuse to give up Samba De Amigo.

I still find it funny that kids (and adults, for that matter) are ultimately unwilling to perform actual iterations of their daily chores, but will willingly do so, so long as TV tells them to.

I wonder when will a "serious" game be developed that uses this intelligently. I know I'm not the only one thinking they can use this in whatever Team Ico's doing or maybe a new IP perhaps? Though I do also understand the market penetration of said game would be limited if they have to buy this as well.
If they bundle this with a said "epic" game together for the relatively same price as a game, then I'd say they have a fighting chance.

I always wondered why Sony was not marketing the PS Eye more. Sony has a Wii mote right in front of them and do nothing about it. If Sony was to start selling the PS Eye with PS3's devs would start using the PS Eye to make games for it. So I really wish Sony would get more people to use it more then just some people from Sony. Plus they need to make games more with it too and not just casual games. So I hope Eye Toy Play 2 is real because the PS Eye needs more games that use it other then just the ones out there now.

only problem is theres already a price situation with the ps3, in that its so expensive. but i bet it would really open the doors for developers to know that so many people would have the hardware for their game.
i know i plan to buy an eye just for webchats with my friends, for home, and for the video and sound recording program that comes bundled with it.
the videos like the tank game are definitely prospects that make me more sure i want one though. i can't wait for stuff like that.

I used to love eyetoy on PS2, but after a while it lost its fun. I guess this could be good though, with the better technology in the PS eye.
Oh, and BTW thee has already been an eyetoy play 2 and 3 for PS2, so this would be the 4th in the main series.
