Soulcalibur IV, Over 2 Million Copies Sold Worldwide
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on August 6, 2008
Either bigger boobs or Star Wars characters did the trick, because Namco Bandai Games has announced that Soulcalibur IV has already sold (not shipped, sold) over 2,000,000 copies of SCIV. The multi-platform game went on sale in the States on July 29th and in Japan and Europe on July 31st. Many people have purchased it.

There's many reasons to get this game. The combination of those reasons is why it's selling so well I'm sure. Definitely better than the two previous games in the series in my opinion. I'm thoroughly happy with it. Now if only they'd release the DLC on the PAL stores.

@prodld50: Accessibility is a pretty big selling point though. As a competitive Guilty Gear player, I can't imagine anyone taking a casual approach actually enjoying it. With games costing as much as they do, people are going to want the full experience. Not my bag, but I can appreciate it, and will eventually pick it up because I'm obsessed with fighters.
But yeah, Star Wars and boobs sell something fierce.

@prodld50: Sales figures dont really mean anything.
I had MvsC2 for the dreamcast. And THATS why I didnt buy it for the ps2. Kinda kicking my own ass for that now in hindsight. But that does not mean that I didn't want a good fighting game. And yeah, the only version of Soul Caliber I own... also on the dreamcast.

@InsidiousTuna:
hmm....lets look at these sales figures -
Marvel vs Capcom 2 on PS2: 246,000 copies sold 3 years after its release in NA (I could go further but I figured a cut off point of '05 was sufficient)
Guilty Gear X on PS2: 47,000 copies sold 4 years after its release in NA.
Now, way more people owned ps2s in '05 than people own 360s and ps3s now, yet they weren't buying fucking amazing fighting games then. And you want to tell me that people are more-so buying SC now for the "robust, well-balanced fighting engine that's both deep and accessible" and not Star Wars. You sir are wrong. Why do you think Star Wars characters were put in it in the first place? Because it will increase sales!
Now let it be known that I think SCIV is pretty good and anyone who enjoys fighting games should pick it up, but I still strongly believe that the great sales figures are because of Yoda and Vader.

I bought it because I loved Soul Calibur II, and I took a chance on this. I love it. I've never been good at fighters, but I'm really good at Soul Calibur IV now, and these games are so much more enjoyable and rewarding when you're good at them, and not just button-bashing. When you're blocking loads of attacks and unleashing long combos, it's brilliant.
I've always been a Tekken fan, but I prefer Soul Calibur now, I think it's the fantasy setting that does it. I'm fanatical about anything fantasy-related, so naturally, I love this game.
Character customisation is great as well.

@Kymarak:
He's dead on, despite your claim that "sales don't mean anything" (funny guy). The MVC2 figure should give you a hint, because of the PS2's user base edge. RE CV sold more on the PS2 than it did on the DC over a year later in the west.
The fighter genre has been going down the niche road for a while. Unlike VF and Tekken, SC never brought good revenue in the arcades, so Namco had to ensure that home sales make up for the lack of an arcade version. SCIII tanked in the arcade needless to say. SCII is the series' best selling title thus far because of gimmicks, and history is repeating itself albeit on a more broad scale.
FYI, there is actually a trailer for SW The Force Unleashed in the game.

@FeatherNET: I don't think boobs alone can sell a game--Rumble Roses didn't exactly fly off the shelves. I'm sure there's tons of other examples.
@SG79: I'm not sure fighters are a niche genre. I'd say they're just in a sort of slump at the moment. There weren't any big, heavily publicized, AAA fighters released for quite a while, but that doesn't mean that fighters don't sell any more--I mean, we're in a thread about SCIV selling 2 million in about a week. There's a lot of anticipation for SFIV (and even perhaps MKvDCU) as well, and I'd bet those are going to sell like hotcakes too. I remember FPS's went through a bit of a slump several years back as well, but the genre has made it through stronger than ever.
Fighter fans tend to assume that a "well-balanced, robust fighting engine" means tournament worthy (and when MvC2, according to the tournament scene, only has 5 characters you have to wonder just what that means). Not to dredge up the whole casual vs. hardcore circus, but the two takeaways are: 1) "Casual" gamers have different expectations than "hardcore" games, and 2) The casual market is way bigger.

@celery: No no, my point was that Star Wars characters couldn't possibly be reason alone why the franchise is so popular.
Proof would be that Soul Calibur II was a decent game, and featured popular characters from Tekken, Zelda and Spawn, but Soul Calibur III on the other hand was a superb game that didn't even need 3rd party characters.

@prodld50:
This has probably helped a bit but soul Calibut has also gotten a LOT more media attention + commercials. You can't honestly say that the other two you mentioned had that treatment.
Also, Guilty gear has a reputation of being hardcore, Soul Calibur has a reputation of being accessible.
The final nail would be that Virtua Fighter 5 didn't sell very good (unjustly) so there were plenty of room for a new fighter on the PS3. Xbox 360 sales? Well, Virtua Fighter again not being the smash-hit and DoA 4 is getting old. Conclusion: The right game at the right time with great media attention.

One of the nice things about this reiteration of the Soul Caliber story is that you can customize the outfits. Which means I could immediately equip all of my favorite girls with ankle length leather trousers and a breastplate that actually covered all necessary bits.
In short a version of Soul Caliber I can play and enjoy without feeling like a pervert.

Wow, that is impressive. I wasn't quite sure how this would sell. I wonder how the sales split internationally.
I've been playing the game and I just can't get into it. As a party-type game I can see the appeal, but otherwise memorizing lots of long combo moves just isn't fun to me. Otherwise the character creator is not as fun or deep as I'd hoped. I suppose I was expecting a classy and high res version of the Smackdown CAC mode....not so much. Classy...sure, high res-yes, but there is too much 'earning' to be done to do anything interesting.
All-in-all I have respect for SC 4, it is good for what it is(a hardcore one-on-one fighter), but just doesn't reignite any real interest in the fighting genre me. We'll see if SF or MKvsDC can do any more.

When SC came out for the DC, I had a sweet setup in my apartment with the VGA box and a 21" monitor and 2 ASCII sticks, and everyone was into it- button mashers and serious players. SCIV has brought that back- my friends who don't normally play fighting games are into SCIV, and even if they just button mash, it's still a lot of fun. This series somehow can maintain a high level of depth while still being fun and accessible to gamers who don't normally play these games.
I actually just finished modding my Hori EX2 stick with Sanwa buttons and gate, I figured between this and the other great fighting games coming out soon it was worth doing. The stock buttons are crappy and you just can't beat Sanwa buttons, especially for all the high precision Just Frame moves in SCIV. Setsuka's Just Frame combos are quite possibly some of the most challenging things I've ever tried to master in a fighting game. You have to hit that shit at just the right frame, I've been practicing a lot and I still whiff 1/4 of the time.

My one big problem with Soul Calibur IV is the Star Wars characters. Yoda is awful and game breaking. I am never ever taking anyone who plays as Yoda online seriously. Fuck them in hell.
I think the fact that Yoda utterly shatters the already rather poor game balance, while Vader is much more balanced, is the best reason to buy it for PS3 rather than 360.

Great game. Good to fall back into rhythm with Mitsurugi. I played Ivy in SCII, but I guess they added some additional stances for her...haven't worked it out yet. Hilde's pretty impressive.
Beaucoup sales can be attributed to star wars, boobs, the fact that it's soul calibur, etc...I'd say the latter two. And for all of those pestered by Yoda, Kilik smashing his bo staff onto the green one's head is very satisfying.
Also, I've seen soul charges in the game, but can't pull them off regularly...anyone know what the button combo is on the 360?

@Fury-genesis: Well, I cant say Ive played a pro using Yoda yet, but online his char has been dominated furiously. I do better without his char, lol.
Not saying that he might not be broken, I just don't think hes a game breaker, hes pretty slow and weak with the least useful of the force abilities. Hes easier to repel and parry also, with slow recovery speeds between attack (Must touch the ground to start again).
The Apprentice on the other hand... sigh. This frigging guy can pull with the force, levitate lightning attack and a wave ground attack, dudes got more "out of the way" abilities than the guy with the gun in damn game.

Wait to see if they fix the infinite and other bugs before buying DLC. Make Namco earn their DLC money. Game will be great if it's patched right though. The only real negative on the gameplay outside of glitchy stuff is that backdashing is gone, and okizeme (Ground hitting) is too much of the game, somewhat due to the lack of backdash.
As for the FG genre, it seems to be getting out of an 10-yr slump. Lots of good games released in the past 12 months and next 12. Most of this decade has sucked for fighters, so glad they're coming back.

Sure its accessible to button mashers, but any skilled player can put down a masher shamelessly. I've never had trouble dealing with masher friends, playing them it becomes a game of making the match fun for them by letting them score certian hit and combos, getting my life down so low, occasionally letting them win.
I mean charecter has a lot of to do with it. it's much harder to mash with ivy than it is xenua or kilick.

IN DEPTH CARACHTER CREATION. That alone makes it fun for anyone... like kill bill, play like the bride or O-ren. Like Final Fantasy, play like cloud or sephiroth. Like street fighter, play like ken or ryu [add a sword of course]. Like politics, play Obama vs. McCain....

The success isn't really too much of a mystery. It's the first top tier fighting game on the current consoles. It's a lot of fun and has a lot of support.
My only complaint with the game is the two second delay on recovery after you get knocked down. Plenty of time to get hit cheaply, and the computer knows it. When your life bar goes down by a third from one knockdown and successive combos, it can get pretty annoying.
Bring back old Ivy please. She was a lot more fun.

Established franchise + top-tier gameplay + character building * (lack of online fighting games + lavish amounts of T&A) = Profit

@Iarwain:
so i heard 3 hit comboes werent considered long and difficult. play gg before u make a comment like that. sol cal is not about learning comboes.
this game isnt balanced at all. ive played it online and so far, the apprentice is completely broken. his comboes can easily take off 50% of ur life. only problem with him is he cant get out of pressure easily., however, his damage potential more than makes up for it. same wit vader. yoda isnt a problem online because vertical atks destroy him. the fact that he either lunges or jumps to atk means if he stops sidestepping to atk, hes gonna eat lots of counterhits.

@arstal:
Frame rate hitches are in both versions from what I've played. I reckon that like the SCII issue, it's turning into a pissing contest with both fanboy sides claiming that one has more than the other.
@celery:
Truth remains that for a genre that had its elite sell through 4-6 million per version worldwide, it's niche (4+ million SFII on SNES, and 6 million Tekken 3 on PS). VF5's home versions didn't even attract the same attention VF4 did in any territory. Tekken 5 sold less than T4 etc, and SCIII on the PS2 alone didn't do as well. Online hype isn't something to go by to gauge how SFIV will do, and it's the usual crowd that's anticipating it.
All the genre relies on is gimmicks to attract attention. Star Wars and comic book characters.. I'd say that another MVC is likely nowadays.

I think you'd have to be a pretty hardcore Star Wars fan to buy Soul Calibur for the sake of Vader or Yoda.
I bought it because I love Soul Calibur so much I wrote a storyline FAQ on GameFAQs. :P

I'd say the reason the game sold this many copies is because of widespread advertising. I couldn't flip to a TV channel the past month or so without seeing a commercial for SCIV.
Do you see TV commercials for Guilty Gear or Virtua Fighter? Hell, do you see any ads for them outside the hardcore gaming media?

dunno what the reason is, but a friend of mine bought it last week for his 360. been playing around with it a little bit myself. And it's fun and all, but Yoda is friggin annoying! and the big boobs are redonkulous :S
The custom characters I made never had boobs bigger dan 0 on body type. the +50 option (which eve has) is just ugly, but that's my asses-are-better-than-boobs opinion ;)

@SG79:
Well, I haven't noticed any in-gameplay hitches in the 360 version. PS3 definitely has more, but I'd say 95% of matches are fine.
VF5 sold crappy somewhat because it was a launch title for the PS3, and had a six month delay on the 360. VF4 Evo did well cause it was underpriced and released when everyone had a PS2.
I think VF5R would sell better. There is a new vs Capcom game, but it involves anime chars. SFIV will do well though, I don't think it will do as well as SCIV, but it will sell close to 2 mil (capcom projects 1.8mil)

@arstal:
Not much of an argument, since games like RE CV, and more recently RE4 sold much better then their original releases despite a 6 month to a year delay. VF5 on the 360 was the definitive version, yet it failed to get attention.
Evolution didn't exactly sell that well in any region. The original however did very well in Japan. VF5R might very well stay a mere arcade title like Final Tuned, but Sega could very well port it easily since they have engines for both consoles already.
Not exactly trying to put down the genre, but no matter how you look at it, it's nowhere near what it was in the late 90's to the turn of the century.
I'm well aware of Tatsunoko VS. Capcom. I'm still a fighter fan, and I'll be happy as long as they're produced. I'm just being realistic given market trends. Oddly enough, the only real survivor might be the SSB series.

After spending many an hour with it.....I have to admit this is my favorite SOUL CALIBUR since the DREAMCAST Version.
It cut down its feature set (no more adventure mode), and really stuck to what a fighting game should be about....beating the crap out of other players.
The Custom Character creation I have to admit is PURE GENIUS for this game......and the fact that you can tweak the skills to your playstyle.
I can easily say this game will not lose interest very quickly.
Especially when they release that Darth Vader download for 360.....(Yoda for PS3)....cough cough.....

@SG79:
You're right that it's on a down note, I just don't think it's dying, it's just that they made games like 3S and GG that turned off a lot of players.

OK, Star Wars, HD virtual cleavage, cool moves and a nice mix of accessibility and depth (with only the not-so-accessible VF and 'old news' DOA as next-gen competitors, neither of them having weapons combat) may *seem* like the big selling points on the face of it, but you have to learn to read between the lines... and what does it say between the lines?
It says LIZARDMAN.

Huge boobies, star wars characters, plus the possibility of messing with the girls with not-so-huge-boobies (in SC's standards, at least) and make them MASSIVE...
Though yeah the game's a blast.

Maybe the sales reflect the fact that gamers were starved for a good fighter. Really, how many good "next gen" fighters are out right now?

@wallapuctus: Namco has already confirmed that Vader and Yoda are going to be staying on their respective systems for the foreseeable future. I know, it's too bad... I would love to cut yoda to pieces on my ps3, but oh well.
